Does Your Man Like Your Natural Hair And Do You Care?

Does your man like your natural hair

Well, does he? And yes, do you ACTUALLY CARE? I find this topic or problem perplexing on so many levels. I mean…why are we even having this discussion in the first place?

OK, I get it. Your man, husband, boyfriend, significant other is important to you so what they think about you matters. So this two part question is a real-life dilemma for some women who are considering going natural, already going natural or who have been natural for a while.

Does your man like your natural hair?

I know this is kind of a loaded question since there could be a deeper meaning behind it like, who’s asking and what’s their ulterior motive? Are they hating on your hair or do they know your man and knows what he likes?

Well, scratch all that. It’s me asking and I’m just inquiring because apparently this can become an obstacle for some women when deciding to go natural. Let me start with a story I want to share.

A co-worker of mine wanted needed to go natural because her hair was breaking off badly. Her real problem was heat along with relaxing. She used a curling iron or a flat iron regularly but her hair was paying the price.

She decided to stop straightening her hair and allow it to curl naturally. It was beautiful, or at least I thought it was. She wore a curly fro like she did back in the day (she was older than me and actually had a fro back in the 70’s). Yet, she was self-conscious on how she looked despite what me and others in the office were saying. We all loved her hair.

Her hair was thriving, the breakage and thinning hair problem was disappearing. Happy ending, right? WRONG. After about a couple of months she was back to flat-ironing and using the curling iron. Her husband didn’t like her curly fro and preferred straight styles.

She had tried to appease him by wearing straight wigs but changed her mind and went back to what she knew he loved. I was shocked. Shocked at him and shocked at her but I kept my mouth shut. It wasn’t my place nor my relationship.

My opinion

I’m sorry but I’m not going bald for ANYBODY. My thinning hair was one of the reasons I went natural and the thought of going bald outside of an illness is sheer madness to me. I’m sure she told him her hair was breaking off or at least I hope she did. When does preference become abusive? I think it does when your preference harms me in some way.

In my opinion for the guys that dont, they are caught up in the AMERICAN fantasy world.. i.e. I was somewhere the other day, and a guy came up to a lady (they knew each other) she look nice and sexy, persay, and she had a natural-hair style (nice &neat) the guy immediately makes small talk w/ her and then says ” whats going on with your hair, she replied what u mean. he said “i mean… what are u doing with your hair…” she said “what you dont like it??” He didnt reply. then she said well imma straighten my hair in April… he said “Yea you do that …” i just looked at her liiike ” B… u gonna let him insult u like that …” IN other words ladies LOVE YOURSELF and the GUY WHO WANTS U, WILL TOOO!!! #iamnotmyhair… NOT #IamMyHairNaturalBeautiful

Sabrina Richmond Perkins

Exactly and he’s an A-hole for even saying that to her.

My man loved my locks (dreadlocks) most men I meet, love my hair this way. Black men love natural hair, its all about the style that you were your natural hair in

My husband has mentioned several times about how I should do my hair. He hints at getting it straightened and things like that but I honestly pay him no mind. Part could be my choice of styling. Even though I’ve been natural for a little over two years, I’m very much a beginner and is still learning my hair. So sometimes, yes, my hair may look below par. Everyday I’m learning and finding new styles. Once I get to where I love my hair and if he still have an issue then it will just be his problem. My hair is a part of me. In vows, it says for better or worse. If my hair falls into that category and if he feels that me bring natural is a deal breaker then that’s an issue for him not me.

Letitcia S. Herbert

I have heard the stupidest thinsg in regards to this and seen too, girls who have had locks their entire lives or had natural hair and they relax it just because the guy does not like it, same for relaxed hair girls too, who go natural because their guys do not like their hair processed. I know girls who go back and forth with being natural and relaxed, weaves, wigs, faux locks and dreads, bald etc depending on the taste of each persons they date, I am like wow, I find it insulting to, your hair is a personal intimate thing, its not just physical, its an emotional thing that can be pretty spiritual too, it makes me question women who are really fickle about their hair and change it not for themselves but for other people around them especially the man they date, he can state he does not like it, fine, but its yours to do with it what YOU feel comfortable and happy with.

Sabrina Richmond Perkins

You said a mouthful right here! I’ve known women who change their whole personality according to the likes of each man they date. Sad

I like my coils. I went natural for health reasons. I think people in my surruonding believe what their mother told them, “If you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all.” The people that like my hair gives me compliments and the ones that don’t, don’t say anything but I can tell they don’t like it. Oh well!!!!. I’ve had plenty of women that says “Oh I like your hair, I wish I could do mines like that”, and the only reason they don’t I and again I think is because of their spouse or boyfriend.
