Lupita Nyongo has been sweeping us away with style and inspiration on the red carpet since….Forever. But what all of us want to know, is how does she look so gorgeous EVERY red carpet, and with her natural hair out? Finally Lupita is giving us her hair secrets for her natural hair red carpet looks.
1. Keeping the traditional maintenance
Lupita does have a hair stylist, Ted Gibson, and he shared all his great tidbits to help give Lupita a red carpet look. His first is something we all know and love, steam treatments.
He starts off with very hot water on towels and puts them on Lupita’s scalp and hair. This helps bring out the shine we all know and love and seals in all the essential oils* for moisture.
2. In love with L’Oreal
Ted Gibson, Lupita’s hair stylist, is absolutely in love with L’Oreal, and uses the defining spray and keratin infused spray to start Luptia’s hairstyle off fresh.
After working that in to the scalp and hair, Lupita is ready for satin hairspray and a perfect shimmer to make sure hair stays and shines. Ted Gibson says, “I think that women who have curly, wavy or textured hair have the same concerns, which are lack of shine and moisture,” but he does not worry about Lupita, L’Oreal is coming to the rescue.
3. Daily maintenance is important!
Ted is really opinionated about daily maintenance, as it is the root of all hair health. He gave us a lesson, “For more frequent hair washes want to use shampoo and conditioner that adds as much moisture to the hair as possible. If you only shampoo once a week, you need a little stronger shampoo to remove product build-up and environmental toxins from the hair.”
How about sulfate-free or regular shampoo? “I think a mixture of sulfates and non-sulfate cleansers will work fine,” advises Gibson. “Sulfates are getting a bad rap; they remove buildup from the hair and scalp. But I don’t think every woman needs sulfate-free products. You need to know your hair.”
4. Lupita knows how to work it
Lupita has her own secrets on how to work her hair into a fly style all day long. Here is what she had to say about her texture and maintaining daily:
” I think African hair is like clay. You can mold it into whatever you want, but it’s also very easy for it to change shape during the day, so having an Afro pick on me at all times is paramount.
I also use Miss Jessie’s Baby Buttercream, which loosens up my hair so I can pick it with the Afro comb. It’s best to use it when my hair is wet because the water softens my curl, so I use it after I shower and also before bed, which is a good time because at night your body is regenerating.”
We can all learn a thing or two from Lupita, but it is good to know many of her secrets are the same as ours!
