My natural texture is a little strange, well maybe not that strange, I have looser curls in the front and back, coily curls on the sides and the middle is the kinkiest portion of it all. When I started my hair journey, I wanted to find someone who had hair like mine.
I was just getting into YouTube and blogs because I had no idea what to do with my own head of hair, and I wanted to see what other girls were doing with there own kinks. If I had to rank who I followed the most, I would say Curly Nikki back in 2008 because I felt at that time that her hair was just like mine.
She did a lot of writing back then and I learned plenty about her hair but I still felt I needed to learn about mine. Fast forward to a year after that, I started to focus on hair education, not just blogs and video tutorials but really getting to know what made my hair tick.
I am still learning, ain’t no shame in admitting that, that’s why I continue to follow blogs and YouTubers because I am interested in their own struggles, techniques, and successes some of which I can apply to my own journey based on the knowledge I have gained.
With that said there has been some interesting commentary going around in the blogosphere, it started with popular Youtuber Jouelzy and the video she put out called “So Over the Natural Hair Community & Texture Discrimination. “ I watched the video once and I nodded yes throughout the whole thing, then I watched it a few more times and I nodded a little bit less, and I am going to tell you why.
Here is what I agree with, there is discrimination generally, it started a long time ago when a little black girl would look in the mirror and say, I want my hair straight and long like mommy because she believed that she was not pretty enough and neither did main stream media.
We saw in one response where a commentator mentioned that there are still some colonial minds out there that don’t like kinky hair even when it is growing from their own head. We have the example in the picture above on our own Facebook images where a woman with a three strand twist out on 3c type hair got ten thousand plus likes and three thousand plus shares versus another woman with the same hair style same length but a kinkier texture who received three thousand plus likes and only two hundred plus shares.
In reality, it might be easy to just say the numbers don’t lie, ‘they shared her more because she was light skinned and her hair looks like baby hair”, but is it that simple? If you look at each woman’s fan Facebook page, the kinky* haired woman (Hodge Podge Files) has eight thousand plus likes while the woman with the loose texture (Alyssa Forever) has about thirteen hundred.
What validity does the kinky* versus curly argument hold now? We do not perpetuate any idea that the natural hair community generally holds any texture as better than the other. As a community our self, our website does not see texture as a measure of competition or as a measure for success as a brand and we can also safely say that for some other members of the of the media and content community as well.
Chelsia ChevyRida Owens says
I think it has something to do with the color in the hair.
Ms Marcy says
That was the first thing I noticed. I loooooooooove color. As a 4C, thick, dense, kinky haired woman with color in my hair, I notice color first. I think you need another example to compare the 3C lady’s hair too.
Donna Chesser says
I like both, but perfer to have the first.
Ashley Tee says
I follow up with people that have the same hair texture as mine
LaToya C. says
Content I follow all hur textures as long as their information is helpful and their hair looks healthy!
idomagirl says
very well written….
See Jay says
I would rather follow with someone with longer hair so I know they can maintain healthy hair.
Jacqueline Vreux says
I like both…but my color is brown and also they are different styles… Both hair are healthy and nice… come on…!!
Judy JamesBarraja says
I would choose the one my hair closes resembles-the second one
Courtney Gray says
I know there is texture discrimination. People like looser textures and that elongated look. They like looong hair. But if a person with 4a with tons of shrinkage no one would really like it. Not knowing that that 4a hair girl has waist length hair !!!
Ca'metra Willis says
They are both pretty, but God don’t make mistakes. Natural hair is what it is. Totally real and unaltered. Why find a flaw in something that is so pure as unaltered natural hair?? This topic shows continued lack in self esteem, why go through that whole process to still not like your hair that God created.
Shazzel Thompson says
well said!
Charlene Jeffers says
Perhaps it was the different styles of the two strand twists, the way the tutorial was presented, maybe one youtuber has more subscribers than the other. To me it’s really hard to pinpoint, can’t just blame it on the texture of hair.
Charlene Jeffers says
Meant 3 strand.
Aaliyah Lites says
that’s not a discrimination made more people are subscribed to the light skin girl or made the don’t like the way her’s came out
Natasha Johnson says
I follow the you tubers with hair texture that matches my own, & that’s just to avoid disappointment. I love the styles type 4 women can wear, it just never comes out right on my thin, fine texture 🙁
Rebecca Tribeca says
I don’t often sub to hair channels. But when I do, they have my hair texture- 4c. I just think it’s pointless subbing to lots of channels, you never watch them all. I choose ones which areuseful to me. A 3a girl is probably a lovely lady- but she’s no good to me. I sub to people for texture, styling tips, maintenance tips. I don’t often ‘like’ or ‘share’ videos either, so I don’t show my support that way.
Francesca Matthews says
I noticed that too on IG. They may like it but realistically most of us can’t achieve those styles…or if we do it won’t look like theirs does. I’ve learned to stay in my lane where my texture is concerned.
Gabrielle Vivir Vida says
I agree I watched a tutorial on the bantu knots out done by the first model.I decided to try it with the exact method and product but it was not at all the same result.my texture is different.
Melisha Johnson says
That’s not discrimination, people like what they like, at the end of the day you’re still stuck with the hair you got.
Cherry Robertson says
Still relevant.
Ty Butler says
Hair and hair styles, it’s up to you how you feel about your hair or style I can rock any hair style…
Tia Lawson says
I subscribe to channels who have hair types similar to mine. My hair type is about a 3C, but I also view channels to get info about my daughter’s hair who is more of a 4B. I get ideas of what products work their each hair type. Some things work in my hair that doesn’t work in hers.
Daiquiri A. Holland says
As a kinky/curly textured head myself, I mostly subscribe to or watch videos of people with similar texture(s) to mine. I have a few looser-curled peeps scattered about in my list, but I keep it minimal since a vast amount of them don’t carry much info pertaining to my texture. Very few are able to do so. I don’t care to “lust” after what another person has, all it will do is discourage you in the longer run.
I can recommend people like MahoganyCurls or MoKnowsHair since they seem informative across the board despite having looser curl patterns, the rest, not so much.
Also, what is this like/share information based on? A single page? Their own page(s)? A multitude of pages? I feel like different pictures will get different responses, depending on how many people are subbed to that particular page or happen to like the page itself. I don’t particularly think any texture is better than/superior to the other(s); they each have their advantages and disadvantages. All that matters is that you embrace whatever is happening up there, and just let it be. That’s what I do, at least. 🙂
BlackHairInformation.com says
Daiquiri A. Holland what happened was a popular youtuber with 4c natural hair accused the natural hair community of being texture biased or having texture discrimination because her videos are not shared as much as women with a 3c texture. The article has a link to her video, we do not think it is that easy to just point the finger at the general community accusing them of discrimination. The pictures above show less likes for the 4C natural, but over all she has more likes on her fan page in comparison to the 3 c natural.. so that argument to some degree can be seen to have very little validity..
J West says
That popular YouTuber seemed to be complaining more about not getting sponsorship from companies vs people in general discriminating against her hair. The truth is, she has attitude and her channel is somewhat controversial and maybe that’s why she’s not getting the sponsorship she desires. When a couple of people pointed that out on a post on Instagram, she came in and started insulting those people calling them, “holier than thou”. She also complained that other gurus in the natural hair community shun her; but she didn’t associate it with the attitude that she tends to have.
My take is this, if companies don’t cater to the 4C hair type. Don’t spend your money with them. It’s that simple.
Erica Porter Walton says
Texture isn’t the only difference. I like the most liked photo because of the color and length. There’s nothing wrong with either girls hair but one looking more stylish, regardless of texture. If you had two comparable photo’s (same style, color and length) it might be easier to identify a possible texture discrimination issue.
BlackHairInformation.com says
Kinky hair will shrink more though so their hair lengths may very well be the same. In any case, the post was more about the general trend. Afro textures get less likes/shares across the board than curlier textures . Still it may not be indicative of a problem with the community as a whole.
Dee Sam says
This thing is causing seperation among afro/kinky/curly hair sistas. Why is that? Though I do indeed look at people with my 4c hair, I als view other hair types as well. I just believe some are taking this thing too far.
BlackHairInformation.com says
True, that’s what we thought too. Personally I follow anyone and everyone I like. We can all learn something from ladies with multiple textures imo.
Jessica Brown says
I totally agree with Erica Porter Walton.
Acreativemind Creative says
I have 3c hair but find myself hitting the like button on what appeals to me regardless of whether or not the texture/colour matches mine. 4c hair chicks on YouTube are in my top 5 favorites. I don’t have the same hair issues that these ladies do but I still learn from them & generally enjoy what they say from their genuine research.
Ameenya German says
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so if something appeals to a person that’s to their liking, it doesn’t have anything to do with what others like. You can compare any two pictures and there would be different numbers of likes between them… Is it discrimination if more people like Fantasia over Beyoncé? No it’s not, it all has to do with preference. It seems like to me the issue comes from comparing the pics when this is not a competition…
Raven Marie says
I subscribe to the YouTubers that have similar textured hair as mine for hair tutorials and similar skin tones for makeup tutorials. Everyone’s entitled to their own preference.
Deborah Wilson says
Yes
Sivana Nolan says
The one on the right just looks better I don’t think it has to do with the texture
Leenayka Yulaykis Isaac says
Sometimes I find myself not feeling 4c hair.. But yes it’s just a matter of what an individual likes. I just consider 3c-4b hair the best.
Raven Yvonne Tansier says
I think its the color and her make up is on point too. Its the overall pic, not just hair.
Monique Elizabeth says
Happy to be really nappy I follow my hair type. Its all beautiful.
Audri Ruff says
I follow all types on youtube…I dont do much sharing about hair stuff
Shannon Smith says
Now days more people are starting to go natural and Reolize their texture is curly cause more people are mixed or just have straighter hair than the expected. When I first went natural I was shocked cause my texture came out to be straighter than I could imagion smh
Weatha Morris says
No Texture Discrimination is NOT relevant….Is this yet another made up feud? People can like whatever they like whey does it always have to be judge on color, texture, curl pattern etc…. I personally will follow someone closer to my hair texture and type..
Jeri Smith says
I was already subscribed to the first channel, and hadn’t seen the second before. Well I watched a twist out video of the 2nd channel just now and her hair came out great! I will say, though, that the 1st channel’s 3 strand twist out tutorial went more my speed (beginner). It could be that I didn’t watch the right video for the 2nd channel. Both have lots of content. I’m glad this article came out – I tend to watch many different techniques so I can get the hang of it. Now I have another resource. But discrimination had nothing to do with me not coming across the 2nd channel before now.
Ruby Ann says
I think the hair color has alot to do with it, it shows the beauty of the curls whereas the black curl equally beautiful doesn’t get so much shine
Dante' Nicole Miller says
I don’t think it’s discrimination. There are more women who have 3c hair on the internet and they seem to be more popular than people with 4b or c hair. The reason being honestly and this is my experience, Women are more likely to go natural and stay natural when they have 3c hair…so when it comes to viewers….they have a bigger audience than those who have 4c hair bc they didn’t look like their hair crush. This is what I saw my experience so I could be dead wrong and my hair is 4b…and It took me a while to figure some things out. In the black community theirs so much rift and teams..”team light skin team dark skin” “team curves team skinny” etc lets not have team 3 and team 4 because as natural we seem to be more joined..right now lets not have a rift.
Tiniera M Turner says
I disagree
Dante' Nicole Miller says
Okay..
Danetria Davis says
That’s just petty! The styles both are pretty. It’s just a matter of hitting a button. Sheesh
Tammy says
I like both, but prefer the second picture because it is beautiful and more like my hair. I prefer the kinkier texture in twistouts because it reflects our heritage and the results are just beautiful. I prefer the first texture because it is easier to care for and beautiful.
Sarah Thornton says
I like both!!!!! Natural hair is beautiful no matter what the texture is like. Be urself!!!!!
Miesha Cook says
I think it’s more about the color and the length, not the texture of the hair. The color makes a big difference, at least to me.
Shante Harvell says
I agree there is discrimination but I saw both videos. The girl on the left just happened to explain the steps better. And my hair is nothing like hers. I’m a 3c/4a
Camdyns Mum says
I personally like the one on the right better
Kiki V Honey says
Naw I think this has a lot to do with hair color, the one one the left just seems like a fresh young style… My opinion tho
Samantha Clark says
I do the same as Tia Lawson. I generally try to find information from many sources to fit it to our needs.
Dollie Page says
Lol stop it! Please!!!! Lmbo
Chalonda Watkins says
I like styles that I myself can achieve. My twist outs will not look like the first one so I keep it pushing to the ones that pertain to me. No discrimination here. I’m just looking for help with my texture. I love my hair and I love to see all the different things other people do with similar textures.
Latoya Aaliyah Small says
I personally prefer to watch videos of natural women with 4b/4c hair texture because that is what I have. Products and styles that work on other textures may not work on mine so I prefer someone similar to me for a bigger chance of success. So far it’s worked for me. I think a lot of type 4 hair ladies aren’t satisfied with their textures. I personally love it and shoutout to my other type 4 sisters that also appreciate their texture and love it. All types learn to appreciate what God gave u.
Ms Marcy says
Thank You!!! I love my 4C hair, and I am grateful to all the beautiful people who post videos. I save the videos I like, and I forget to like it too. I will do better.
Samantha Bondez says
I don’t think its discrimination, everyone has different taste. Just like some people like pink and some like red, its just about preference. It’s not about one being better than the other, its just about preference and what personally appeals to the person.
Princess Elvin-Lewis says
I like the second one just more of, bigger is better when it comes to afros
Daphne D-Truth Farmer says
I tend to pay attention to bloggers with my hair texture or similar to mine. I mean that just makes since to do. However,I still view and subscribe to others with different textures and I do learn a great deal from them. I never bought into the 3abc or 4abc deal because it really boils down to what works for your OWN hair. If I had to guess my hair is a 4 something. Anyway, back in the days sisters and brothers was not tripping about hair textures. Black people styled, moisturized, combed, washed, and conditioned their hair specific to their hair needs or hair care regimen. Now it has turned into a circus in my opinion with all of this drama in the natural hair community . I just love natural hair period because my hair is happiest when it’s natural. Both of these twist outs are beautiful, however we must be mindful that we already live in society that believes European is the standard of beauty. We definitely should not polarize ourselves in the natural hair community with something as petty as textures. That’s just idiotic to me.
Shiki Mason says
I like them both
Endenezjia Graham says
Both styles and texture are beautiful.
Drina No'MoreLyes Phillip says
There is always going to be discrimination ….. There is always a majority but I like the girl with the black hair because I know mine will turn out like hers.
DelRosa Kimyada says
I have wondered this myself…..always something. Smdh
Vedejah Scroggins says
I just want my hair to grow lol which ever way makes it grow fast longer and healthier I
Vee says
This was so well written! Thank you for including my pic as part of the discussion Emily 🙂
I agree with you, in general people like what they like, there’s nothing we can do about that. There are many more factors at play than just hair texture as you so eloquently stated. Is the Kinkier texture “under represented”? Yes, in a lot of spaces, but that’s one of the reasons why I continue to willing share my journey.
Alma Ruddock says
Thanks for responding Vee. You just go on representing for us kinky girls!!
Adriannia Garcinez says
What’s a 3 strand twist out? I’m new to this weaveless journey lol… I tried Bantu knots and the shrinkage was so real… Is there any twist with less shrinkage?
Robin Mascus says
Maybe a couple of months ago being to follow people with the same hair textures as mine. You can being to get a fake sense of what your results maybe, thinking i did the same thing she did, used the same products and my results weren’t the same. Ummm because your hair’s not the same.
Robin Mascus says
@ Adriannia Garcinez hanging Bantu knots
Danaya Paige says
Discrimination!
Marsha Mcdaniels says
It’s not even like that it’s what people like stop the hating. It shouldn’t b about race
Charletta Bullard says
I started my natural hair journey in December of 2012, and I gravitate to YouTube videos for product reviews and those that were in similar stages as I was. I didn’t go for similar textures too much but more for style content and personality. What I have done recently is searching certain styles and supporting vloggers with low subbies and support their channel. Mostly those with low subbies had really good contents and just seemed like they wanted to share their natural hair experience. I love this journey and I love watching vloggers of all hair types.
Benita Walton Hawkins says
I care about the content my hair is 4c so being able to see the different styles and techniques are key.. I have no bias…
Destiny Brown says
I like them both.
Markita Keyes says
I always like textures close to what mines is like.. To somewhat visualize what that style would look like with my hair
Tiff Pryor says
Both are equally beautiful to me….
Tiara Lewis says
I like all hair textures. But, the color in the other one looks more appealing and tends to stand out. I like them both but I didnt pay attention to the texture. One just stood out more because of the color.. to me anyway.
Kimberly Champion says
i do tend to watch the vids with a texture closer to mine
Grace Mwami says
Really ? Smh
Monica Cameron says
What’s a hanging Bantu knots? How does that work?
Monette McLin says
Both textures are lovely, however I am partial to videos that display styles on my “type” of hair. Why bother looking at a vid that does NOT comply with my texture? I don’t think it’s discrimination. It’s common sense.
Jordann Allen says
A lot of type 4 hair bloggers have lots of information that could help any one with any type. Although I do believe part of it is just most African American women are mixed in some sort of way and tend to have multi patterns or type 3 hair. A lot more women would go natural if they knew how beautiful that type 4 is that may be part of the reason we see either girls like this photo or type 3 more often than type 4 I have type 3 hair and I know the things that can work for me that type 4 girls do and the stuff that would weigh my hair down. I feel like most actual naturals don’t watch a lot of tutorials and it’s a lot of girls who just admire beauty and type 4 kinky haired girls deserve that attention and adoration as well.
Buhriyyah Nayl says
I always watch the videos which have the same textures as mine
Stacy F. Morrow-Irby says
I tend to watch videos that are close to my hair texture and the one on the left is closer to my texture. But I have also copied styles from other textures that I really liked.
Carrie Cowart says
Everybody wants their hair to turn out or be a certain way. Once I figured out my hair wouldn’t turn out like the left I started you tubing my hair type instead of watching the ones that I wanted but could not have.
Robyn Little says
I dont subscribe only because of texture I subscribe just how well some one can give me good n4 and inspiration I have gotten good inspiration from some of the u tube followers .
CrysTheSagittarius says
If I was on YouTube looking for info on how to do a bantu style and those 2 videos popped up side by side I would pick the left one & I would do so because:
1. my altered hair texture (I’m relaxed) is similar to hers & therefore I believe the procedure to achieve that style will work for me.
2. this left image alone easily attracted my eyes more than the right one did simply because her makeup is on point; its a prettier picture. If the girl on the right would have glammed up for the freeze frame cover for the video she would definitely get more views; she need to be more eye catching.
Personally when I’m searching for hair info on YouTube I will view anyone because knowledge is power & I’m eager to learn so the person’s texture doesn’t always matter. However when I do view people outside of my texture its usually because their video stood out from the rest on the list & you could do that simply with a pretty picture or unique title. Unfortunately there is discrimination in everything in life & it seems there always will be but when it comes to YouTube those hateful ppl rather thumbs down a fine video or leave a nasty little comment.
Kimberly Thomas says
I actually do the same as most women here. I am looking for information that will help me with my hair journey. I enjoy all hair types and things that they have to offer. That’s how I decide who I will subscribe too. What I dislike is people that are just talking about random things and not the topic that they should be addressing. Both hair styles are nice and I would subscribe to both and I do not share.
Rachelle Stephens says
I have never found a you tuber with my hair texture , the one on the right or left ,not my hair at all .
Kelly Lewis says
What nonsensical question is this?! Steups!
Latricia Jones says
I don’t believe textured played a part in these photos because although the styles are similar, the ombre hair color pops on the first pic.
Ms Marcy says
Girl, the color is on POINT!!
Vannie Cambridge says
One is more popular than the other–
For example who doesn’t know Naptural85 right? She has a tremendous amount of supporters and subscribers established– her texture is kinkier than mine but if there was a side by side pic of she and Myself, she would get the most likes because of her popularity…. People always wanna blame things like textures and skin tone yet they fail to acknowledge other possibilities—
We are setting our own selves up for failure—
It could also very well be ones personality and how one can relate to the vlogger— C’mon people!! Hair discrimination? People are doing the most!
And now for us to acknowledge our own beauty and feel beautiful we must base that on how many likes and shares we get on a picture? The internet is making “dummies” out of us– Most are being too thirst for likes that they forget that the whole point of sharing is to help or inspire others who may know nothing about a Hair Journey!!
My beauty isn’t determined by who thinks what of me or how many subscribers and likes I get on my pictures & Channel– my beauty is determined on how I truly feel about myself, what I think of ME when I face myself in the mirror– remember, one can not feel inferior without their own consent! We gotta do better than this whole hair debate and hair typing that some random dude invented!! Smh
Paola Nadege Kouadio says
If I could like this a million I would!!!
Lilly says
I believe the whole texture patterning causes controversey in the natural hair community. Despite the fact that more black women are wearing their natural hair in various textures, I believe that the envy of hair texturex is alive and well. Just like issues of lightskin versus dark skin. I think many people are in serious denial about the subject.
Lauretta Brady says
I follow any one with great hair tips
Courtney Nia says
I like both actually, I might prefer the one on the left a little more only because of the color but both are pretty
Camille Renee Edwards says
Everybody seems to desire the thinner sleeker natural rather than the thick and more coarse textures
Anani Bat-Yahawadah says
Joulezy made a video talking about this on YT. Texture discrimination is very real. And what’s worse is if we’re honest about it some of these youtubers are rocking texturizers and lying about it. But we so stuck on good hair bad hair that we play right into it. Kinky hair is beautiful and deserves just as much representation. Another discrimination in the natural hair community is the absence of locs. But this is just my opinion….
Abi Brown says
Who cares how many likes..both of them are pretty
Paola Nadege Kouadio says
Much to do about nothing!! Subscribe to who you want for whatever reason!!!
This 4c individual subscribe to anyone regardless of hair texture or race that is my human & individual right as it is yours; they all teach me something & I am thankful for them for what they do. I have learn a lot; I am natural because that was and is normal in my culture as is relaxers– I did not even know about natural hair movement until it was being mentioned on forums & YouTube.
Peace to all— just love your fellow human being & yourself!! You can only control you so inferiority is by consent—don’t allow it by focusing on physical differences (value judgement) & focus on the behavior ( I.. Performance, action, or work that yielded the result that some may attribute to physical attribute instead of the hard & smart work they put in)
Tonya Brooks DeBrow says
I sub to both I like getting different ideas for styles regardlesd if its not my hair type I might be able to work the stlye to fit my hair type. But im very aware and comfortable with what my hair can and can’t do.
Nicole Caldwell says
People always find a new way to create new discriminations. Is it not okay to like one picture over the other? This has nothing to do with texture. Smh
Tamera Hughes says
I definitely agree with this article. Great read!
Sheena Garner says
The one on the left has more color and looks fuller/longer. Might not be after you account for everything but looks like it.
Tashina Viola says
I never get more than 20 likes when I post a natural pic. I get no shares.
Khada BlackDiamond Yorke says
Truth be told the kinkier the hair the curlier it is DUH. 4a 4b & 4c are all beautiful our culrs are more kinky & puffy, I’m 4c. My curls are puffier & kinkier like a poodle & I love it. Cause no matter how puffy/kinky my curls are or how defined they are its still beautiful & wild. 4 type girls have kinkier curls witch makes our hair bigger. Hey every body loves volume our hair type has the most volume. No our curls aren’t loose but they are still beautiful & tightly curled just like a poodle, you can see our curls & puff from a mile away. I PERSONALLY LOVE TIGHTER CURLS CAUSE TO ME ITS MORE DEFINITION, PRETTIER & WILD WITH VOLUME. Plus I think all culrs are beautiful but to me like 4 type espically 4c because it has its own language & does what it wants lol some times my hair is loud & my curls are every where then a week later or so my hair is just chilling & not as vibrant but it comes with the territory & I love my kinky wild curls
Akisha Kesh Frye says
I would have liked both for different reason. I like what I like hair texture has nothing to do with it
Keisha Loving MyLife says
I see this same discrimination on Instagram with pictures of light skinned naturals and dark skinned naturals. And if there is pictures of a dark skin naturalista, she has a TWA…
Vine Lents says
I like what ever video looks nice which are all. Since I have a twa n tight curls I learned to deal with it.
Katrice Hickman says
Both are beautiful, both have a lot of likes and shares. The first one may have more like because it speaks to a wider variety of people. You have black, white, mixed, Hispanic, etc women with hair line the first pic. Not as many different types people with the second one….
Katrice Hickman says
I’d go with the second one since its mite like my hair….
Starr Jay says
I have 4c hair. But if u don’t like it u don’t it. No discrimination you like what you like.
Jacqueline Willis Harris says
I like all hair. I have the ability to see the beauty in all hair and all hair texture. People of color need to take a self analysis on the things that are happening today that are carry overs from slavery, etc. For example the phrase”Good Hair”. Good hair is what exactly? Anything that’s not nappy and difficult to style and grow? THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS GOOD HAIR. Hair is hair and depending on your ethnic background and your DNA that will determine what type of hair you will have. Embrace your hair and learn how to take care of your type of hair. Do so with your children also. Educate yourself and bring out the beauty in yours and your children’s hair. Black parents know this, you can have 2 children and their hair textures can be completely different from one another just as easy as their skin tones can be completely different from one another.
Tabatha says
So true! I have a cousin who is “High Yella” and her hair is 4C-Z. I’m like a cinnamon brown and my hair is 4A with sections of 3C/4B. Good mention. I understand that people tend to what the looser curls, but I have seen styles on kinkier hair that just Rock and then someone with looser hair tries it and its sub-par.
Tara Sutton says
I look at all types of videos but I do try to find youtubers with a text similar to mine so I can actually recreate the look. I am not that creative lol!!
Tabatha says
Me neither. Also a lot of the time it doesn’t come out the way it should.
Courtney Smith says
Hair discrimination is not something people just made up. Just like skin color divisions, it’s very real. If most people are honest they’ll admit that, even if they don’t have a personal bias. When I first became natural I was drawn to looser curl patterns bc I thought they looked better. It wasn’t until I learned to love my hair that I sought videos by women with hair texture similar to my 4B kinks. So I can attest to the hair bias (not saying everyone has this experience) but I did.
Rokita Sharpe says
Not a good comparison…. Left longer & color pops. Right shorter & no color.
Symonica No Nonsense Reese says
I personally do not like either of the hair styles seeing as its not something I would wear, but if I had to choose it would be the right simply because her curls are more realistic. It will be easier for most girls to obtain her style versus the other. But I wouldn’t wear it the way she has it. The other girl just has curls it looks like she can wet her hair and get those curls I’m not even going to try … pass
Aria Marshall says
Ashleah Jackson Interesting…
Rasheema Marie Rhyne says
My hair looks like the one on the right but I wish it looked like the one on the left only because it would be a little easier to manage than having all thick hair
Violet Rose says
I like the left a little more because of the color. I would love to highlight my hair but I’m afraid it may damage it.
Ashleah Jackson says
Aria Marshall thanks for the tag there is tons of discrimination when it comes to natural hair but maybe it’s just preference? What u think
I like both pics but I can only relate to the right… the left was a fantasy… a dream that can only happen with weave Praise God for other folks hair!!!! Any who I have learn to love and embrace my 4C coarse hair and I have learn from other women’s that have hair like mine.
Ashleah Jackson says
Natural sisters what y’all think ?
Chef B. Finley Frankie Sneeze Danielle DivaPeach Haden Onyana Rosa Azilee Lareuse
Danielle DivaPeach Haden says
Yea, I do believe there is discrimination. Black girls vs. Mixed Girls Ashleah Jackson
Mel Mcduffus says
There are more important things going on in the world!
Melanie Rucker says
If you use Blue Magic Grease for a twist out it makes a world of difference. I been natural for over 3 years, tried it and I finally have the look I am looking for with my twist out.
Randi Gary says
Smfh…ppl just need to drink bleach and die with this nonsense….. First its natural vs relaxed….now that heffas are bandwagoning back to natural this sh*t is starting…..no hope for black females…. None. Forever dragging each other down over BS…making mountains outta mole hills
Randi Gary says
Natural hair discrimination…this is what it’s come to though…. Now that natural Nazis have beaten the “relaxed hair”horse to oblivion… They no longer have a common enemy so now they’re nemesis’… Seriously…o.o….no seriously…. Gtfoh.
Tabatha says
Randi being hateful ( saying that someone should commit suicide by bleach is hateful) about it isn’t going to solve anything (though I know what you are talking about) I roll my eyes every time the subject is brought up. I feel its not that person’s fault that their parents decided to mix and mingle and they were the product of it. They get so much backlash for what their parents did. It is what it is, but we ( as Black people) are choosing to keep the distance there if we can’t push it further. We are doing it over hair and skin color stuff that Our parents and God gave us, Stuff that we have no control over. I understand the upset, but instead of getting mad and what not, let’s focus and congratulate black women that are educated, good mothers, family ambassadors, successful. Celebrate women who are not adding to the negative stereotype that has literally been slapped on us . Focus on that instead.
There are tons of people that are looser curl patterns that wish that they had my hair. So its all good to me.
Tabatha says
I like both styles, but I see the point of the experiment. I look at the styles that I know that I can pull off. I don’t care what the type is because I know that my hair will look different. For example I do a lot of styles from Queen Teshna. She looks like she is in the 3’s and I have 4A with sections of 3C/4B. But her styles are easy for me to do, so I watch a lot of her videos. I also use the styles that TheChicNatural does as well. Lol it is the silliest thing , but just RECENTLY I have figured out a way to do a twist out that my hair could comply with. I have to flat twist. Apparently my hair doesn’t really like the regular flat twist way. For products I follow Naptural85 because she is closer to my hair texture ( at least I think so). So I don’t look at hair styles for texture I check to see if I can do it.
Jessica Brown says
I think it is the color difference not necessarily the texture. I like different colors in my hair too.
Cece Santiago says
I’m surprised by how many blacks talk SO much about “good hair this and good hair that” As long as you maintain it what does it matter??? I realized that OUR people are still letting that crap from slavery define them and then say “mixed people have good hair’ SO sick of it.
Lotus Flower says
Ok so I thought I was going to see more posts about UNITING the differences between the hair styles, like sharing tips, routines, techniques and explaining that the real difference lies in the genes between the two girls that’s it GENES GENES GENES that’s it, I’m still seeing ppl use race and/or commenting about one texture being better, You have no control over what which parent gives more then the other. So please let’s actually change the past and talk about the coming to together of the same hair, and the only reason we have differences is because we have different GENES…. I LOVE THEIR HAIR… because it’s simply healthy n natural
Shaniqua says
I think it comes back to the mindset of the content creator personally. Having over 80k subscribers is something most people would be elated by and proud of but in the video it just came off as that wasn’t enough. I wrote about this on my blog as well if anyone is interested. http://geminicurls.blogspot.com/2014/05/texture-discrimination-or-defeatist.html But I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that it’s up to the content creator to engage her audience. I make YouTube videos, so I know what all goes into it.
Adeola @ TheManeCaptain says
i don’t think it has to do with content because that would mean that all type 4 bloggers have poor content. And from the picture comparison in the post which were taken from your page, it shows that texture discrimination is real. People want what they cant have.
themanecaptain.blogspot.ca
J West says
I have 4c hair type so I generally watch tutorials from ladies who have a 4C hair type. However, when it comes to basic hair care or even product reviews, sometimes you can learn a lot from natural hair gurus with other hair types. For example, QuestForThePerfectCurl and MoKnowsHair are both in the 3 range, but they are very knowledgeable about hair. QFTPC, offers product suggestions that are really on point and honest. I have even benefited from watching Waterlily716, who is in the 2 range. If you ONLY watch YouTubers with your same hair type, you are missing out on a lot of the knowledge that other people have AND it contributes to the separation instead of promoting UNITY.
Nique_d_geek says
HodgePodge Facebook page has more likes because it has been up longer (since 2012 I believe). Alyssa forever just created her page January 2014. I firmly believe if the two pages were created at the same time Alyssa would have more followers, I wouldn’t be surprised if by the end of this year Alyssa has significantly more followers than the other young lady.
Angel says
I personally like to watch women with all natural hair types but preferable close to my hair texture which is 4 b-c hair.. Btw I love the hair color..
Bri Bri says
The example you gave with alyssa forever reminded me that the theory of texture discrimination it holds sway because she has a video tutorial on how to do a “perfect” twist out. Now there’s nothing to say that her tutorial was much better than all the others out there but her video has over A MILLION views when compared to the hundreds or thousands of views for other naturalistas with THE SAME content . Why? People like her hair more because of the texture and curl pattern. Simple.
Dee Matthews says
Wow this is so true
Camille Angelique Johnson says
I subscribe to all textures. I love natural hair, I enjoy watching vids of different textures.,
Cleopatra Jones Best says
So do I. There are tons of Natural hair gurus that I love with different textures that I’m subscribed to on YouTube.
Tia Mitchum says
Me too! I never think color before watching. Ridiculous to me.
Stephie Smith says
its very true
Gerrica Morton says
Crazy, but true
Anjanette Long says
It is what it is
Tomeka Chaney says
well wouldn’t it be expected the style will look different depending on the texture of the hair??? Why does have to be discriminatory? The definition of the curls and hair color makes the style on the left stand out more
Wendy Jean-Louis says
becuase the majority of people liking and following are people who do not share the same hair texture as the first pic.
Esther Williams Jordan says
I agree. Nit only that people have the right to like what they like! GEESH!!!!
Erinne Palmer-Mitchell says
I thought the same thing. The left style has more colors, it makes the style stand out more. The one on the right is just your average 2 strand twist. Maybe I’m discriminating against the color of the hair. Lol. Not the hair texture itself. Both are beautiful.
Karla Renee says
Great response Tomeka Chaney
Sharmane Smith says
It’s terrible that we are now frowned upon for the tutorials that we like as well. What videos I like are my business and shouldn’t matter…. This natural hair journey really is a struggle when you can’t be and do what you want because you’re constantly being judged.
Sharon L. Davis says
So now we must look at every video on a certain hairstyle? Don’t we have enough to judge in life. SMH
Whitney Sad'e says
In dis case I can say it’s prob not cuz of the texture…but the actual hair style! The other one isn’t all dat neat either
Debora Walker says
they probably also thinks one lady looks better also
Lexy Darling says
I beg to differ the lighter skinned AA woman has always been preferred over a darker skinned woman since slavery. Hints as to why the house bound and darker skinned were field bound. So to say texture is why one picture got more likes than the other undeniable disregards the real struggle! Skin colour
Connie Hale says
You nailed it! #Colorism
Esther Williams Jordan says
Everyone like what they like! That’s all!!
Erricka Edwards says
No read the Willie Lynche letter that’ll explain it all!
Blaque Chyna says
Its not about color I will say it’s the hair. For example there’s a pretty face dark skinned girl who attends a university where I work, with the most beautiful wavy hair she always keep in a bun. I would watch her video before an average light skinned girl. Its personal preference and appeal of hair not being mean or discriminatory.
Kia Daniel says
Smh
Cb Sampson says
THAT’S TOTALLY IN YOUR MIND IF THEY SAID DARKER IS BETTER YOU WOULD THINK THE OPPOSITE THE BRAINWASHING GOES DEEP STOP COMPARING AND TRYING TO PUT BLACKS AGAINST EACH OTHER IS THIS EVEN A BLACK OWNED COMPANY?
Jamila Lee says
MahoganyCurls, GlamTwinz334, Naptural 85 just to name a few… Maybe the girl on the right is boring -OR- maybe she’s new to youtube like DeLaurian … This article was reaching. YALL TRIED IT! ☺️
Goddessweaves Virgin Hair Bundle Deals says
agree!
Kiyona Brown says
It’s ridiculous. I actually thought about as I am transitioning: the comparisons never end. It’s either the issue with who has the straightest relaxed hair or the silkiest curls. Sometimes I actually question why I decided to go natural.
Markisha Tingle says
I try and follow people who have a similar texture so I I know what products to buy and some I follow based on what hairstyle Im looking for and some I just follow cause I have girls and they have different textures
Kimberly Wiggins says
Honestly I saw the color over anything.
Chala M. Brooks says
It doesn’t matter to me because I learn from them all.
Anita Copeland says
Lol! I think the color is just more appealing on the other one..it caught my eye before the other one..
Angel Park says
Black women obsess over mixed raced hair and light skin…we still have a ways to go In acceptance of our own natural beauty
But also the woman on the left is relatable to more races. White women will watch her because she fits their standards of beauty… Black women will watch for the same reason. But the dark skinned woman is less attractive by societal definition so less views and less shares….sad but true. We have to change the way we see ourselves and the world will change the way they see us
Kia Wright says
Ogechi Onwubu says
Also, white and Hispanic women are more likely to have hair similar to the woman on the left. So if more people can relate to the first one, it explains why it got more likes and shares.
LaShika Ladson says
Embrace what’s been give. To you…we are all mixed up…none is better than the other …be you am original …
Irene Johnson says
I like the color more in the first one..so I think a few things can bring more likes …not just texture or a prettier face
Aneesah JustNisa Ansari says
I follow naturals with all hair textures but I prefer ones with similar hair to mine. I can’t do half the styles of type 4 naturals on my hair. Its too thin & curly.
Uhm No says
Stupidity
Prudence Renee says
One do look better than the other
Makia MiMi Meadows says
I think the first one has more likes and shares because of the colors.
Sommer Ragsdale says
I follow all types. Skin color to me doesn’t make a difference i just love doing hair and if i see a style i like or one of my clients like we will try it.
Leesa Whyask says
I see this all the time
Nati Boo says
No the first grl is just prettier and lighter skinned. I think it’s more of an issue of skin color.
Sommer Ragsdale says
Both look nice just my opinon.
Neshanique Darden says
Why was this pointed out? And by us…..I don’t think the people that liked either video looked at it in that manner……some people might like it better because of the highlights….how can we determine what the race is of the persons who liked it…….unnecessary
Tammy Lockhart says
Agreed & I love the color & besides that’s like comparing apples to oranges. They could of found two women with hair color (diff hair textures) or two without hair color also with different hair textures! Lol
Tammy Lockhart says
Agreed & I love the color & besides that’s like comparing apples to oranges. They could of found two women with hair color (diff hair textures) or two without hair color also with different hair textures! Lol
Sahar Dixon says
I dont think its discrimination the hair style on the right…just isnt cute….its alright. ..the twist out wasnt executed….
Sherryce Henderson says
Oh gosh here we go trying to cause another divide among us!..could be the fact that one has her hair colored could be length could even be the time n day the post were made more or less ppl looking..please stop this..we have enough to deal with with other ppl trying to divide us
Terry Matthews says
Yes. Like the fact that a lot of us didn’t think it was important enough to go vote. Smdh
Krista Kinchen says
I discriminate for sure, but the opposite way of this pic, stopped following mahogany curls, or whatever because her experience is not even close to mine, her hair was always curly vs, “nappy”. she could offer me nothing, different strokes…
Karleen Brownsuga says
I basically love watching videos with my hair texture, I need results in the end.
Jasmine Julissa Holt says
I subscribe to people who are like me people who are interested in things like me so there ya
Gia Danylle says
I follow and tend to look for textures similar to mine, for product and style references. The only reason the one on the left captured my attention was due to the color.
Char Crawford says
One simply looks nicer. No harm too either
Melissa Juanita says
Um, I will only follow or like someone that has hair like mine… very rightly coiled fine hair. I mean it makes sense.
Jamie Carter-Bailey says
I sure don’t i subscribe to anyone that gives good tips and information. Even if we don’t have the same hair texture I’m a 3b/3c but I follow naptural85 she’s my top 5 favs
Shimon McLean says
OMG! I think I’ve heard it all! Moving on…
Tyrone Bates says
I like dark wemen some black (ppl) ignorant like that just like every other race but only (God) can judge they hated (Jesus) so skip what these worldly (ppl) thank light skin (ppl) can get skin cancer if they stay in the sun to long just like white’s but humanity is one all this is so illrelavent but the lady on the left hair style is better hand’s down…
Darling Dayanna Crisanto Funez says
content for me ! second one is my texture so I rather subscribed to someone I can actually relate to
Darling Dayanna Crisanto Funez says
and viva 4c !!!
Tania Anderson says
Funny how the article is about hair texture issues, yet several people have commented on skin color…As a community we have a long way to go…wish us luck
Tina Waters says
It’s actually the same concept. We black people have been debating light skin vs dark skin since slavery. Now it seems we’re looking for another way to separate ourselves from the next black person. It’s really sad that we do this instead of just owning our blackness whatever shade and owning our hair no matter the texture. When it boils down we are all black to them.
ShiShi Maze says
I see more curls(like mixchicks). .. then kinky ….not to say discriminating. .. maybe just more of them post BUT I’m always looking for my kinky girls cause that’s who’s hair mine relate to.
Keesha S. Sulton says
This entire article is just……ugggghhhh. …..reaching
ShiShi Maze says
My hair. . My edges are more like the picture on the right.
Alisa Lee Powe says
People be frontin’. This is an real issue, so stop with the denial.
Tina Waters says
It’s only a real issue if you make it one. Just like light skin vs dark skin. If you let intelligence prevail you will realize that this devide among our people does not benefit us in anyway.
We are still black and our hair is still textured.
Blaque Chyna says
Its the appeal of the exotic hair i guess u can say. As I said in a previous comment there’s a pretty dark skinned girl I know with lovely wavy hair. It has nothing to do with color or complexion. Some ppl like or are drawn to different textures. I’m not gonna watch a Caucasian woman’s hair texture video (unless for a certain style tutorial) so it’s not a white admiration race thing.
Sherry Lyn says
Yes I’m guilty, only the other way around. I tend to prefer what’s on my head so I like the ones that look like my head. I would subscribe to the one on the right & others with my texture.
Cleopatra Jones Best says
Let’s not pretend it doesn’t exist. Both are two different textures that both look nice however the one that has the looser texture tend to get more likes. Me personally I don’t care what texture a woman’s hair is. If it’s nice and healthy I’m going to compliment. Period. IMO it’s shouldn’t matter what texture a woman’s hair is hair is hair!
Shelby Allen says
Both of these women have beautiful hair but i subscribe to the ppl i think have the same hair texture as i do…..because i can understand better about what i need to do with my hair..(my hair texture is like the girl on the right)
Tasha Tasha Tasha says
I love my fro. That simple…I like both pics.
Jessica Myers Young says
The styles are totally different, maybe people just happen to like the color of hair and style of the first lady. The Mohawk look is not for everyone. We as woman of color need to stop judging each other by the color of our skin and the texture of our hair.
Zita Vigier says
based on content and texture resemblance, don’t care for anyone with smoother cuticle and loose curl patterns what works for them will never work on me.
Monica Pal says
I’m more interested in similar textures because I want tips that will work for my hair type (4b). That being said, I also value the other videos for inspiration. I’m not always a fan of the styles for type 4 hair, so I adapt styles from type 3.
Rina Bridgers says
One has a tighter 3 strand twist out while the other one is loose I like the highlights in the first pic but I would like amyone who I think does a good job I dont go off skin color. You like what you like people need to stop making an issue out of things
Alexandria Gaston says
I think color always makes a hairstyle POP I doubt it is texture discrimination.
Jamie Booker says
Wow!! Really. Why do we as black people always have to find a way to separate ourselves…
Sarah Green says
Why is this even up for discussion. On to the next bait topic….. Ps. Both are super cute.
Candice Williams says
I know this exist but I tend to follow folks with the same hair texture of mine which is similar to the lady on the right.
Lakergirl Forlife says
Both look great!
Elle Norah says
It’s the highlights and color.
Michelle Nesbeth says
I’m not shallow. I watch anyone.
Ollie Rayford says
Hair products, color, length, and execution are other factors that may come into play. Over 3,796 likes is a huge compliment. I’m sure this article is more insulting than 3,796 genuine likes. Now how may people will like it just because of this? Why make it into something as negative as a case of discrimination? All 3 strand twist outs will not look the same nor will they be liked the same.
Jackie Queen-Walker says
I don’t think its discriminatory… I watch youtube videos on natural hair all the time but the way i chose which video to watch is by looking for people with the samehair texture as i do. I can not style my hair the same as women who have a tighter curl pattern. its not me discriminating… I just cant relate to coarser hair because i dont have it…
Jamila Kelly says
texture. … discrimination?
… really?
hair discrimination. .
Adrienne Bridges says
I just don’t understand what the big deal is with you lady.
Akisha Vs Kesh says
I love the thicker textured hair more, simply because it reminds me of my own hair the other ladies hair I beautiful as well gorgeous color
Ni-Ni Patterson says
This isn’t new. Plenty of people seem to prefer ‘Mahogany Curls’ and Tia and Tamera’s texture (beyond envy it) over tighter curl patterns. Some genuinely feel that the first texture is more manageable and holds moisture better and longer. Others fall into a shameful category and are told one texture is better than the other even if they’ve achieved great manageability, moisture, length, and overall hair health. If my hair texture was like that, I wouldn’t mind my hair in it’s natural state since I wouldn’t be breaking combs, overly irritating my sensitive scalp causing massive headaches no matter how delicate of a touch is used (VERY ‘tender headed’), and going through so much product just to wash, condition, deep condition, detangle, dry, and style my hair.
Tyshianna Bankhead says
Well. I like both pictures. There maybe some hair discrimination but personally I love the curl pattern of the lady on the right but I do like how smoove the the lady on the left side look. She used that eco styler gel and argon oil, which I believe the one on the right could have achieved. But I understand what the article is stating.
Carla Artist says
I think highlights are tacky. I look at hairstyles I enjoy I never LOOK at straight hair unless braids. I wish being mixed was as easy as people think it is. Other women black and white rarely are supportive. Best believe when they are I love it. Perhaps its a female thing to br ay peace I just be myself and give positive energy. I have naturally nappy hair.
Jamila Bowen Suggs says
Both hair is beautiful, but I can say I subscribe to more that is similar to the hair on the right b/c I can learn more. Her texture is closer to mine. So I know what results to expect… But not are gorgeous. I have kinky hair tho
Pamela Pettway says
Yeah its some mess
Audri Ruff says
There is definite discrimination.. Me however I sub to YT channels for content and personality. I also sub to channels where youtuber has my similar texture as mine. That way I get realistic expectations of a product or a regimen and styling
Janette Moran says
I think it’s because one is a high, bright red, the other girl is more dark.
Unfortunate. I like the hair on the right. It reminds me of my daughter before her mind got ruined into thinking Caucasian hair is somehow better. Smh
Vanessa Walker-Lee says
The first girl just wears it better
Christina Banks says
Yup yup
Christina Banks says
I thought natural was no chemicals pretty much highlights are chemicals
Tina Waters says
Natural does not mean no chemicals. Products are chemicals unless you’re making your own with all natural ingredients.
Phatgrl Lynn says
I like both of them!!!
Keiterra Walk says
I subscribe to whoever has a hair texture more similar to mine.
Tomiko Jamilah Bridges says
I look for tutorials whos texture is more like mine!
Cheri Parker Clark says
I like them both
AJ Mac says
Actually, I do think that that it’s there. You’re all lying if you trying to be “kind” about it. I think both hair textures are beautiful; however, I like the style better on the right better. I like the one on the left with a different style. To each their own! I follow those with hair texture close to mine. I think WE as a people with various textures have so many choices to rock and that is beautiful!
Curly Lox says
I watch many videos but I sub mostly to hair that resembles my texture. I don’t watch vids about perms and weaves either. My hair is 3b/3c so I would most likely not sub to a 2A or 4c channel if it’s not beneficial.
Akem White says
Now this was thee lamest post I have ever SEEN…point blank Period!
Octavia Danielle Reed says
i dont think one has anything to w/the other. One of them is clearly prettier. lol
Diona Denise Stampley says
Right!! Lmbo
Tina Waters says
Why, why, why do we continue to create an atmosphere of hate, bigotry and devide among our own people???
What the hey is texture discrimination?
Sounds like light skin vs dark skin. All of us have different hair textures even Caucasians have different hair textures. It’s still hair and we can learn something from anyone with hair. Most people know their hair from the next person’s and what their hair will and won’t do.
Headlines and articles that address this stupidity are disgusting.
Kia Daniel says
Thank you!! We are divided over every little thing that blows our way! This is beyond an ignorant and pathetic article
MefabMe MefabulousMe says
I agree with you ladies just another group of ignorant people trying to raise eyebrows on an irrelevant topic. Sad
Nanji Taswa Banda says
Theres nothing wrong with preference.and what came out looking better in the particular hairstyle;why do people have to be so biased and dramatic
Christina Hardison says
Maybe they like her eyebrows lol
Christina Banks says
Exactly making ur own or buying organic products but meaning no relaxer no color including highlights etc
Tenika J King says
For me, it’s not texture. The first pics results just look better. Not about the texture bc I’m sure the kinkier texture has styles THT look better in ThT hair type than looser curls.
Quiana L Green-James says
As black women we have so many different types of hair textures. We see a style that we feel best describes are own type of hair and try to recreate it. Although; I’m brown skinned my texture is closer to the light skinned chick’s hair… I don’t think it’s what you’re trying to make it seem like… I can’t believe you would post some crap like this!!! You’re suppose to represent all natural black beauty as a whole united front… Come on now!!!
Linda Vallare Johnson says
Don’t Care…both look good!
Dalisa Lusby says
Left looks better! No one even thought about the hair texture. It’s the results of the twist out!
Aleathea Velvetvonblack Worthington says
Its about what I can relate to. Not only that but who has the better method regardless of the texture.
Dinae N Hall says
Dumb post
Bjana Henshaw says
This is stupid. The girl with all the likes is well known and has a larger fan base so of course she has more likes. Also, I would follow which ever page is more relevant to me.
Jen Kai says
I would pick the one on the left simply because her hair texture is closer to mine. That’s the video I would watch, nothing else to it.
Shene A McDonald says
I like her color but no matter the texture if I like the style I will look at it and like it.
Zipho Natasha says
Come on the first is a better picture.
HeyI'm Tiffany Ithabiseng says
How do we know that people who liked the first picture also saw the second?
Deidre Lewis says
Lol.
Julissa Oneal says
How about some positive post? Plz
Imke Prins Hendricks says
the only problem here is whoever set this up to b a discriminatory thing. geez. why do the differences hav to b highlighted?embrace diversity alredy! now we hav ppl commenting on skin colour! yissi nee man. kom uit daar!
and I can like watever I want to like! it dsnt hav to b a texture or colour thing!
Jaszitie Mcdaniel says
It’s cause if the color of the colored hair was all black it wouldn’t. Be any different
Nicole Lynn says
Based on content.
Kb Plus says
First off that chick may have more subscribers on YouTube I’ve seen this video and she does a great job of showing the technique and I was actually trying to follow a long plus YouTube is a marketing tool and some videos get promoted on other channels more then others
China Anderson says
Let’s just rejoice that regardless of texture our sisters are leaving the self hate products behind 🙂
Shauna Monroe says
I would say the color makes the style stand out a lot more. I have color and it just pops
Aisha Cuttingties Pearson says
I agree no evidence of texture discrimination. If discrimination is suspected much more research, studies & even diversity variations must be done & implemented.
Mai Mai Mai says
I believe there is some truth in this however I prefer the one on the right because it’s similar to my hair texture. I can’t relate to that stringy haired mess on the left
Kim Edwards says
I say, people like what they like!
Theresa Marie Bryant says
I subscribe if their hair is healthy and flourishing and they have a lot of videos showing their journey
Theresa Marie Bryant says
And sometimes its about personality and video quality and editing
Jada Blanco says
I like styles that i think would look good on my daughter not about texture or anything else, if a person can do hair good it shouldn’t matter what texture or color ur hair is they should still be able to do it, and make it look good!!! Im not the best!!! I have a hard time making a straight part in my baby girls hair its really curly but at the same like really fine and she has a lots of haur so even two hairs out of place and the part looks zig zaged!!!! I like the photo on the right but everyone has their own choice!!!
Gloria Newsome says
I love my hair it’s course thick and coily and I have enough sense to realize that my 2 strand twist would like more like the model to the right, the only way to achieve the look of the model to the left would involve chemicals for me.
Angeline Angel says
Please let’s not start that stupidity. I am proud that more woman go natural. Period we can not look alike and it better this way. So pleassssse with this no sence article
LaTonya Walker says
Mayb its the skin color n has nothing to wit the hair!!!
Ariel Smith says
I should try the 3 strand, I’ve only done the 2 strand… That took forever though!! My hair’s so thick though.
Torkwase Burts says
Yes I do see ignorance in even the natural hair movement. Seems like people are using different phrases to cover up saying “good hair.” Sorry but my hair is just as beautiful
Da'Vida Cannon says
I only follow those whose hair texture is like mines. Why follow others with a different hair type then be all pissy when their regimen doesn’t work?
Monica Cameron says
Exactly, that’s what I do too!!!
Josephine JoJo Smith says
Exactly!!!
Michelle W Clements says
This post’s so unnecessary kmt, it’s just hair! What has skin colour got to do with it gosh. Both hairstyles look fine to me.
Portia Motsage says
I subscribe to those who have similar texture like mine because the have the same challenges like mine and seeing how they care for their hair also encourages me.
Candace Williams says
Ive noticed this to….. I ALSO noticed there isn’t enough posted pics of natural 4c hair……. (hmmm)
Quimikia Lvmekia Burts says
The one on the left has curls that look wider and stands out more because of her highlights #BAD #EXAMPLE
Virgia LuvdemColts Wilson says
No I go to the one that has hair like me, the 4c women!
April Varner-Chattman says
I go with the videos that match my hair texture.
Jasmine Greene says
How is that discrimination boy ridiculous …more people just liked that photo than the other one …
Dréa Chaka says
Like the content you wish to like.
Share the pics you wish to share.
Follow the hair bloggers you wish to follow.
Make your own decisions.
Simple
I’d rather focus on celebrating and acknowledging all of the people with various textures who embrace their natural hair
Tasha C Williams says
I follow so many YouTubers. None of the hair textures are the same. I follow natural and relaxed people. Hair is hair to me. Everybody has something to offer.
Drea Wright Thompson says
This is so silly. People can have a preference. don’t ‘we’ have enough dumb ish to worry about? Geesh…
Chanelle Pervy Fish Irish says
i would like and watch a video if it had my hair type so i knew what results to expect not because i liked on hair type more than the other
Seanequa Cofield says
I mostly follow you tubers with hair similar to mine but I watch videos of women with other textures for advice, styles, and techniques…to each its own. People are gonna like wat they want for whatever reason….everybody who liked that picture is not Descriminating…come on ppl.
Jahkey JnPaul says
this is absurd. more people just like to see her hair or her better. its up to you to love your hair and rock it. its just like saying you rather pink roses than red ones. get over it. people now make everything an issue.
Monica Cameron says
Preference,.my ass! If she doesn’t have my hair type then why would I even follow her? I’m a 4c and the first thing I looked at was the one on the right handed side. She caught my attention quicker then the left sided.
Bridget Thompson Ewing says
So True what you said.
Kendra Dean says
The highlights make the hairstyle look better. No discrimination. Black women stop the self hate not everything falls into the category of discrimination. Find something to do.
Bonita Thompson says
I wonder how many likes I would get? I have dark skin and that texture of hair of the light skin pic. Makes no sense to me. all black is beautiful!!! Remember that!
Blaque Chyna says
Exactly! We all have different textures it’s just some are drawn to certain types regardless of skin complexion.
Soncerai CakeLife Whittlesey says
And so does your little one lol! People watch watt they want I follow naptural85 and she’s brown like me with long hair like me!
Fatima Fermin says
Thank you Bonita. This lightskinned darkskinned black mixed whatever. That’s why we all call ourselves BLACK cause you never know what you’ll get. Yes we are all mixed or whatever but I’ve seen mixed people with 4C hair and blacks with 3A hair. It doesn’t matter just do what works for your hair!
Leslie Hutchinson says
the lady on the right hair might be longer when pressed out but her curls spiral is tighter but I think we as a people still have work to do on color issues
Joanna Underwood says
Natural hair is natural lets just stick on trying to get more black women to wear there natural hair PLEASE
Willette Rashid says
You all are lying to yourselves if you say that their is no discrimination in the natural hair community. And it is towards women with 4C hair and those so called YouTube gurus are the ones who help it along. I don’t follow none of them. I do what I want to do with my hair. I had some of them heffas told me that women with 4C hair have no curl pattern and that wash & gos don’t work on no 4C nappy hair. I don’t watch YouTube anymore all that they do is mostly push products on you, that will not work on your hair texture anyway. I stopped all products I only do the max hydration method bye bye products and bye bye YouTube gurus. If you don’t believe that there is discrimination in the natural hair communities next time you are looking at a magazine, look for chicks with 4C hair, I bet you that you want find any or maybe one. The ones that you will find are 3A-4A maybe 4b. 4C hair the C stands for coily or coil which is tightly curled hair, it’s not a lose curl pattern like the 3A-4B so as a result of this 4C hair doesn’t grow out as fast as 3A-4B and you don’t get that big curlie hair. If you want to learn about your hair buy the book the science of black hair. I don’t subscribe to no YouTube gurus, I do my own thing. They get paid on YouTube once they make partners and some of them get paid buy the companies pushing products.
Keisha Hoffman says
I agree….
Melinda Alwayskeepitreal Bell says
Wish I had the texture of the darker skinned girl, the twistout ect. Come out much better to me.
Bonita Thompson says
Yes it does Linda! Dre’s Godmother her twist outs are the business!
Sabrina Harris says
Looks the same to me. Highlights are pretty. Nothing wrong with the right pic though. Its More realistic
Jammy Harris says
Some are in denial of the actual texture of their hair. Realizing that the same products don’t wrk and the style may not wrk normally helps with that.
Ashley Campfield says
I like both hair textures. I prefer the more kinky hair, only because my hair is in between both textures. I would want the thicker hair because it holds styles in longer. I always have problems with my curly hair I’ve always wanted it to be more thick.
Ifraj Ingram says
I get what the post is trying to say but honestly if you like the looser curls or tighter ones does it really matter when you look at the grand scheme of things. I like both they both are embracing their natural texture it don’t gotta be a competition
Janelle Williams says
We should be lifting up and encouraging each other and embracing our unique and beautiful hair whatever type it is
Tianedra Bea Little says
Texture discrimination colorism ……..
Sherri Lovemewhenithurts Jackson-Sanner says
Watching people who’s hair texture is unlike mine is counterproductive to my journey. I watch who can help me.
Sherri Lovemewhenithurts Jackson-Sanner says
I don’t like this picture because it’s discriminatory. There are plenty of 4c dark skin naturals with long hair and thousands of likes. I know who the girl is on the left, but y’all pulled your cousin out the bedroom and snapped a shot.
Bridget Thompson Ewing says
For me its a waste of mine time to watch a different Losser curl pattern, I like what they offer but I have to look for texture like mine to get results I need, Now they do show off styling technique so with some things I can use but over all its about my hair texture working with and for me.
Romersi Kiss says
People have to stop is madness clearly the girl on the left her twist out are more defined than the girl on the right and if i had 1 like to give the girl on the left would get it hers looks better it has nothing to do with their skin colour
Gillian Kelly says
Now there’s a fight over same styled natural black hair??? Oh lawddd when will this stop!
Wanda Wright says
Honestly I like both what it comes down to is working with what God gave you all natural hair is beautiful to me everyone’s entitled to a opinion rather it’s to agree or disagree. I love the natural me all of us are unique in our own ways.
Jessica Jackson says
Both are beautiful. I just think people may be attracted to the color of the hair .
Taelor Garrett says
I personally think the difference in likes and shares has more to with the techniques used to create both styles. They may both be 3 strand twists but product variation and whether or not their hair was wet/dry, and the like could be the reason. I follow women with kinkier hair than mine on youtube and sometimes my results are the same, sometimes they aren’t. I know texture discrimination is out there but to solely state that the number of likes and shares are based off of texture and skin color discrimination may not be relevant. Think about it. If the number of shares for one is higher than the other, then more people will see and like that particular video, not the other. Some people like the fluffier look to their twist outs while others don’t. I don’t see why we have to make everything about color and texture. I think women with darker skin and kinkier/coiler textures are beautiful as well as lighter women with wavier/curlier textures. All textures and colors are beautiful and should be shown respect because it shows just how each of us are our own individuals. Individuality is beautiful and so are these two women.
Leah James says
My grands and I are dark skin with curly hair and there are alot of light skin sistas with kinky hair stop the bull we all have different hair types .
Arlene LivingLife Forde says
Ok now put some highlights in the other girl’s hair & let’s see what happens. It is only a comparison if the hairstyles are exactly the same.
Debra Smith says
Skin color and hair texture
Regis Seward says
Does it matter? Plus one has added color so it makes it pop out more. I like both and would hit the like button for both -___-
Lizaira Angela says
I have noticed this before
Precious Nicholle says
Oh goodness already stop reaching for something to complain about.
June Burton says
Doesn’t matter to me, I just want healthy hair
Quiana Richardson says
I think it’s because people want to believe there hair is more like the first one or even close to but it’s really more like the second. I like both styles but I only watch videos with hair like the second because that is how my hair looks.
Shanice Munchingdem Catchindemfeels says
black women are going natural. That’s all I care for
Alexis Gabrielle says
I don’t think it has anything to do with skin color… That’s reaching a bit much. Some people want their hair to turn out like the first girl’s hair; that’s it. Perhaps, they don’t realize that she has a different grade of hair than them until they try the style and there’s looks different. Personally, I’d watch both.
Ta'Niesha M. Jacobs says
I actually lk the pic on the right best. Her curls look more natural to me…not curling iron made.

So we Are just going to use evvvveeeerrything possible as a divisive mechanism?? Smdh
Angie Hamilton says
When I first glanced at the pic, I immediately went to the lady on the right, more realistic, and similar to my own texture hair, I think its bomb, hell I actually been try 3 strand twist my hair ever since..#versitileculture #natural #beauty #woolyhair #motherearth… I wouldnt change me for nothing
Elbert Townsell says
Yes some will disagree, but I can care less, the light skin sister is a barometer of beauty in our culture, now the dark skin beauty? well we will say she beautiful, but our actions speaks a whole different message!
It’s too deep to go into here!
For me the blacker the berry the sweeter the juice! Wanda Kennedy

Desiree Carter says
I like what I like and no one is going to bully me based on their preference. I have a right to like what I want and share what I want. This has nothing to do with texture discrimination, but rather preferences. I prefer dresses over pants. I don’t discriminate people who wear pants because of my preference. Same with hair…
Tia Mitchum says
Thats not my mentality. I love me and I ‘m drawn to those like me or my 3c 4a hair. Although i watch alot of 4c videos. All i can say is small minds and low self esteem think that way.
Iasha Atkins says
Unfortunately it happens.
Laurine Keli Ah says

Shannan Broome says
LaTrice Broome…yyyyyyyyyyy lol
Jessica says
I’m going to be completely honest I have 4C and I’m subscribed to at least 20+ Hair channels although out of all those only one of them is 4c the reason for this is because I like the style would come out on 3C hair better then 4b or 4c yes length also plays a role in who I subscribe to. Although I wouldn’t call it self hate because people just preferred the look on the first girl rather then the second and there’s nothing wrong with that I also don’t think color has much to with the amount of views just overall preference of one type to another
Leah James says
I love to watch Naptural85 she has my hair type and I love her videos plus she knows what she is talking about . She has alot of information . I mostly watch people with my hair type but I also watch 4c videos sometimes . I have multiple curl patterns 3c and 4a it’s frustrating but I can handle it . People watch what they want to watch and there will always be texture discrimination.
Leah James says
I usually prefer people with multiple curl patterns like me with long hair and who are entertaining information and know what they are talking about .
Leah James says
Also stop with the light skin dark skin crap
My grandma and I have curly hair . Hers is 3b. Mines is 3c and 4a and we are both dark skin . I know light skin females and mixed females with 4c hair so stop the bull . Also my grandma has long hair to her back .
Kary says
I would conclude on the same note as you do. Is there a curly/kinky problem ? yes and no. I’d say that as we generally tend to follow people with hair like ours it is normal than curly gets more appréciation than kinky. Indeed I think curly women may embrace their natural hair more than kinky women as the last one are usually more afraid of the journey. “4C can’t grow long” “4s are less manageable than 3s”. Then I say than curly women can be more excentric than kinky women. I’m a 4C thin hair, it’s a type that breaks very easily, suffers often from alopecia so no heat or color for me…and of course as I’m sweating to make my hair grow long I won’t cut it like that. I believe curly hair has more obstacles on their way if they want to get crazy so they can offer more diversity on their vids so more viewers. What do u think of my théories ?
