So I used to date this guy who wasn’t much older than me, and just turned 31. When I met him he always kept his hair shaved, which I thought looked very good on him. However, as the months went on I realized that he was struggling with going bald.
I had no clue that younger men dealt with that, and unfortunately it was something he was very insecure about. Male balding is also called androgenic alopecia, and is the most common type of hair loss in men.
His dad was bald, and men who have close relatives with male pattern baldness are at a higher risk. If his hair loss begins at the temple or crown of the head, that may be a sign of balding.
There is over the counter medication that people can take, or depending on severity, they can be prescribed by his doctor. The guy I dated took over the counter medication and also used hair oils*. Aside from oils and medication, here are a few tips you can share with your guy who may be suffering from balding:
1. Unfollow #TeamNoEdges
He should tell his barber to make sure his hair is even all around. Also, he should remind his barber not to knock his hairline back further – a straight hairline doesn’t make sense while thinning.
2. Water Temperature
He should only rinse his hair with lukewarm water. Hot water will dry out his already sensitive scalp.
3. Wash and Condition
Wash day is not just a female thing. Don’t be afraid to shampoo and condition your hair routinely. Conditioning is not only for women. Find a brand that works and stick with it. Look for a brand that leaves your scalp feeling rejuvenating as this is where your hair comes from.
The point is, as you deal with male pattern baldness you have to still do your best to maintain the hair you do have and your scalp. Do you have a guy in your life you can share this with?
