Natural hair is too much work
Natural hair is as much work as you make it. My own personal routine is very simple; I shampoo and condition every two weeks, and I detangle and style on the weekends when I have more time. Shampooing with my method that I wrote an article on can take 30 minutes to an hour depending on how much clarity you want in your hair. I like squeaky clean hair, so I take a little longer.
Conditioning takes about an hour. I do not do hot oil and deep conditioning* until the end of the month. De-tangling hair should not take long if you section it and comb from the ends to the roots. Detangling may take a long time, but if you love something, you will put in that work. You do not have to take a full day doing your hair, you can multitask.
While your hair is conditioning, start filing papers. While you’re doing your hair you can catch up on those hit TV shows and relax like you need to.
Wearing natural hair is setting yourself up to be insulted
Unless there is something actually wrong with your hair, you should not be setting yourself to be insulted by wearing your hair. Now, there are going to be ignorant people but work on yourself before you head out of the door. And besides, you did not style your hair for them, you did it for you!
Natural hair is too pricey
I personally have not experienced individual products being too pricey. I can do my whole routine within $10 for a few months so I am not sure where that myth came from exactly, but when I was little I thought that because I did my hair every week and my friends got their hair done every 6-8 weeks, they were less expensive.
Here’s a tip: Buy shampoos and conditioners from Sam’s club or Costco and then your other products from Wal-mart or online because you get to buy in bulk which will save you money in the long run. Also, keep a hair budget and see how much it cost for maintenance. Do not become heavy handed with $11/bottle products. You can also get a subscription beauty box.
Natural hair will make you less confident
Wearing your hair as it grows out of your head will make you more confident. It has been my experience that whatever style you like unless you do not fully embrace it, you will have low self-esteem and low confidence.
You need a stylist who specializes in natural hair
You do not need a stylist who specializes in natural hair, but you can find one in every city nowadays. This stylist can trim your hair and tell you about maintaining your hair. However, if you have two lovely hands, you can be your own stylist. You are your own natural guru, remember this is about your journey.
I needed this article…..I’ve been natural for two years now and my hair has only gotten to a a certain length. I’ve grown frustrated because I’ve seen other women who have done the same thing and their hair has grown so much more. I believed that I needed a professional to do my hair but the times I have gone to them, they’ve slapped weave or braids or something in it. This journey has been hard but this article has given me some type of hope. Thank you.
