I think successful transitioning has a lot to do with your attitude about your expectations and taking good extra care of your hair. One thing I learned is… my two textures required different needs to thrive.
I am sure you are wondering what exactly did you do to your hair while transitioning?! We (hair stylist and I) tried our very best to first blend in both textures.
We mainly stuck with flat twisting and curling the ends with perm rods* and we also loved the results of using the flexi-rods! These two styles saved my life and I fooled many people into thinking that I was already natural (lol).
There are many styles you can try to help blend in both textures while you transition but these two were the best options for me. You can also protective style if that’s more of your speed… I just preferred not to. As always do what works best for you hair texture and your lifestyle.
I am happy to report I didn’t experience any abnormal amounts of shedding and no breakage! I contribute this to my hairstylist helping me and me taking really good care of my hair.
I moisturized my scalp/hair with oil and hair lotion regularly and already started switching over to natural hair products that would help me reduce any breakage and heal my dry hair.
I cared for my hair and fed it exactly what it needed. This phase was definitely just the beginning to such an eye opening experience in dealing with returning natural. I feel I began to blossom into a new me inside and out!
My transition was an enjoyable experience and although it was cut short I think it was quite successful. I decided to cut off all my relaxed hair at 6 months due to the two textures fighting all the time making it challenging to manage.
Pay attention to your hair during this phase and if you notice anything abnormal research, regroup and re-evaluate what you have been doing. Sticking to a healthy hair regime will not only assist in making sure you have a successful transition phase but jump start what you will need to do once you are completely natural.
Healthy hair practices makes a difference in our overall health and appearance. If you are thinking about transitioning or currently transitioning I hope you take time to do your research, enjoy this phase and incorporate healthy hair practices.
