3. It increases collagen and keratin production within the hair cells
MSM has the ability to increase the keratin and collagen proteins within the hair strands. How? Since MSM* is a sulfur* based mineral, it can provide ample amounts of sulfur* which is extremely important to the production of collagen and keratin of our hair follicles.
Unfortunately, because our visible hair strands are technically dead, the benefits of MSM would not apply to them but this benefit does apply to the new growth of your hair.
4. MSM can decrease breakage
Because MSM increases the keratin and collagen proteins (our hair strengtheners) within our strands, it creates extra strength also decreases hair breakage which in turn decreases split and frayed ends. This makes MSM a great supplement for those of us who want to get our retention game on point.
5. MSM can help treat dandruff
Alongside decreasing breakage, increasing collagen and keratin, and increasing your growth phase (convinced yet?) , MSM has been known to treat dandruff for some people.
This may have a lot to do with the extra circulation and cell renewing properties that MSM can provide. These two properties of MSM can without a doubt decrease dandruff problems that can occur.
6. It has been known to soften new growth
Many women have reported elongated new growth through taking MSM. This may have a lot to do with the extra keratin and collagen that MSM has been reported to add to hair strands (which may add extra weight to the hair strands).
Whatever it is, many women have stated that by taking MSM, they can stretch between relaxers longer and many transitioning ladies have mentioned that the demarcation line appears a bit softer due to taking MSM.
Common Questions Concerning MSM
How does one use MSM?
MSM can be taken internally via a capsule or powder form. For the powder form, many women mix in it with smoothies, juices or water, etc. Many have stated that they have the best results with MSM when it’s taken along with Biotin* and a good multivitamin*. You can find MSM in many health food and vitamin stores and on Amazon.com.
What is the dosage of MSM that one should take?
For visible results, its good to start off with 1,000 mg of MSM*. Once you feel comfortable with the minimum amount of MSM, then you can try raising the dosage to 1,200 to 2,000 mg. Some women have taken up to 3,000 to 4,000 mg of MSM, but take caution with doing this.
Are there any side effects with taking MSM?
There have been some women who have experienced certain side effects with taking MSM, such as : vivid dreams, bloating, and early or late periods. This however only happens to those who take 4,000 mg and over. For the majority who took 1,000 to 3,000 mg of MSM, there were no known side affects.
Are you currently taking MSM? If so, comment below on how it has helped you in your hair journey!

Can I take the MSM and Biotin with my anti-depressant?
I would ask my doctor about that.
Yes, I just started taking MSM pills. I didn’t know they help with hair. Yay, I’ll give an update in a month.

I’ve actually can attest to the hair improvement w/ MSM, too. To be frank, my hair wasn’t the original reason I started taking it–I have bursitis in my left shoulder from messing it up in high school (over a decade ago…..meh, time sure as hell escapes me, lol) and after years of frustration w/ OTC pain killers not working as well (and NOT wanting to get into being too dependant on prescription ones, which I didn’t always have access to getting anyway), I looked up supplement help and ran across MSM.
MSM is very good for inflammation and so that’s what I started using a few years ago. Funny thing is I kinda sorta read stuff on it about being good for hair and nails and the such but I didn’t think about that extensively at the time until one day (after taking a hiatus from heavy chemical processing of my hair–not say it was complete nature thing but it was certainly more nature than I used to do), when I decided to relax my hair again I noticed it was actually LONGER than I had had it in some time! And it even felt stronger and fuller! Plus, it’s also good on my allergies and sinuses (MSM is good for them, too!).
I guess you can say I’m a devotee to the MSM, lol. I take about anywhere from 6,000mg to 12,000mg a day (I know the dosage sounds hella heavy, but usually this is a decent dosage for those of us that use it for inflammation and natural pain management)

Well I take my multi-vitamin and I take Hairfinity. When I first started going natural my hair was weak and breaking and it was all sorts of bad, so I found Hairfinity and I took it and it made my hair, so much stronger, so it could grow and in a year ina half my hair went from above my ears to a touch past shoulder length. So I’m happy. MSM, I’m going to have to look that up.
I took it for about 6 weeks at the end of the year and then started again a few weeks ago. I take high doses up to 10,000 mg which you have to work your way up to slowly which is where headaches and gas come in if you are not gradual in the increase. I don’t feel like it helps with hair growth for me or really much else as of yet. I did notice a huge difference during the few months I was off it. Lots of decreased energy. I take it because MSM is the third most common substance in your body and it is in 150 organs, yet most people are suffering from a depletion of it. Most people note an improvement in multiple illnesses and problems.
