Ohh MSM. If you put MSM and hair together in the same search box, you’ll find many stories from ladies (and men) who have had great hair success with taking it.
You may also find a few who have stated that MSM did nothing for them which is normal because as always, everything does not work for everybody. But for the most part, you usually find a plethora of success stories on MSM and the benefits that it can provide to hair.
Now, if you aren’t one to search for stuff online, then don’t fret. Because below, we have listed 6 reasons why you should include MSM in your hair vitamin arsenal.
Whats is MSM*?
MSM or Methysulfonylmethane (we promise you that this is not a narcotic) in short, is a form of sulfur* that can be found in everything from plants to animals. MSM* has been used to treat many symptoms from hair loss to snoring to joint discomfort. As promised, here are the reasons why you should include it in your arsenal.
1. MSM increases your anagen phase (growth phase)
One of the biggest reasons why many women take MSM as a supplement is because of its ability to keep the hair strands in the anagen phase aka the growth phase.
Now, as most of us may know, there are three main phases that each of our hair follicles go through: anagen (or growth) phase, the catagen (shedding) phase, and the telogen(resting) phase.
Now normally, the anagen phase would last 2-6 years (or possibly more depending on your genes); the catagen phase would last for 1-2 weeks; and the telogen phase would last for 5-6 weeks.
Here is where the beauty of MSM comes in. One of the reasons why many ladies take it is because this supplement has the ability to keep your hair follicles in the growth phase.
So for example, if your growth phase lasts for only 2 years, you may be able to increase the growth phase if you take MSM supplements*. This will allow for the catagen and telogen phase of your hair follicles to decrease and while you remain in the anagen phase, which would then help you reach your hair goals at a faster rate.
2. It decreases hair shedding
Remember when I said that MSM would allow for many of your follicles to bypass the shedding phase? Well, this can also mean less shedding occurring over all.
MSM is a great supplement for decreasing shedding. With a decrease in shedding, the density of your hair can increase which can create more voluminous looking hair.
Add a multivitamin and b complex! I use this daily
I may need to go buy that B complex. I Have GNC Ultra Women’s already.
Gives me headaches
Liquid msm works for me.
Broke me out terribly!
Can I take the MSM and Biotin with my anti-depressant?
Can I take the MSM and Biotin with my anti-depressant?
I would ask my doctor about that.
Yes, I just started taking MSM pills. I didn’t know they help with hair. Yay, I’ll give an update in a month.

I’ve actually can attest to the hair improvement w/ MSM, too. To be frank, my hair wasn’t the original reason I started taking it–I have bursitis in my left shoulder from messing it up in high school (over a decade ago…..meh, time sure as hell escapes me, lol) and after years of frustration w/ OTC pain killers not working as well (and NOT wanting to get into being too dependant on prescription ones, which I didn’t always have access to getting anyway), I looked up supplement help and ran across MSM.
MSM is very good for inflammation and so that’s what I started using a few years ago. Funny thing is I kinda sorta read stuff on it about being good for hair and nails and the such but I didn’t think about that extensively at the time until one day (after taking a hiatus from heavy chemical processing of my hair–not say it was complete nature thing but it was certainly more nature than I used to do), when I decided to relax my hair again I noticed it was actually LONGER than I had had it in some time! And it even felt stronger and fuller! Plus, it’s also good on my allergies and sinuses (MSM is good for them, too!).
I guess you can say I’m a devotee to the MSM, lol. I take about anywhere from 6,000mg to 12,000mg a day (I know the dosage sounds hella heavy, but usually this is a decent dosage for those of us that use it for inflammation and natural pain management)

Well I take my multi-vitamin and I take Hairfinity. When I first started going natural my hair was weak and breaking and it was all sorts of bad, so I found Hairfinity and I took it and it made my hair, so much stronger, so it could grow and in a year ina half my hair went from above my ears to a touch past shoulder length. So I’m happy. MSM, I’m going to have to look that up.
I took it for about 6 weeks at the end of the year and then started again a few weeks ago. I take high doses up to 10,000 mg which you have to work your way up to slowly which is where headaches and gas come in if you are not gradual in the increase. I don’t feel like it helps with hair growth for me or really much else as of yet. I did notice a huge difference during the few months I was off it. Lots of decreased energy. I take it because MSM is the third most common substance in your body and it is in 150 organs, yet most people are suffering from a depletion of it. Most people note an improvement in multiple illnesses and problems.
