Hair typing is a way to place natural hair into categories based on certain characteristics that indicate the amount of texture in hair. Naturally straight hair is Type 1, hair that is slightly wavy is Type 2, curly hair is Type 3 and coily hair is Type 4. The sub-classifications a-c indicate the looseness or tightness of the wave, curl or coil depending on its diameter. Type four is the most common type for black people or those of Black African descent.
