Yesterday on The Real they had a brief discussion about natural hair with Tamera Mowry-Housley wearing her natural hair on set as the premise for the conversation.
Her hair was super duper cute and she told her studio audience how she would use a ton of heat on her hair which damaged it and caused her to do the big chop.
She loves her curls and was very expressive during her segment about it:
“Obviously I did something a little different today. I’m a little nervous. Growing up on TV on you guys saw my natural hair. I have naturally curly hair, but throughout the years I always straightened it, I blow-dryed it, I put a hot comb to it. And I went through this really, really rough stage, rough patch of my hair where I had to do the big chop. Which is basically chopping all of your damaged hair off and starting anew. I was a little nervous because not many people are used to seeing me like this. This is me.”
She also told her viewers that her husband loves her hair in its natural state; she didn’t like when strangers touched it and even had a story of one of her family friends who was shocked that her hair grew out of her head the way it did:
“My husband loves my hair like this. He would rather me wear my hair curly all day every day than to straighten it. And that makes me feel great. There is one thing that I don’t like sometimes about wearing my hair curly: everybody wants to touch it. They’re all up in your face and you’re like ‘ooooh, wait, nooooo!’ My husband’s friend, sorry Dan, I’m gonna call you out. I went to visit him at work and he saw my hair like this and he literally said, ‘Does your hair grow out of your head like that? No, no, no, no, I think it’s cool! I’ve just never seen anything like that.’”
It was a pretty cool segment to watch, her out spoken co-host Tamar Braxton made it very clear that we would never see her natural hair, but that’s ok; we will be ready when she is…baby steps.

I saw her hair yesterday on The Real. I thought it was so cute. I wanted to “boing” her curls! (You know when gently pull them and let them spring back).
Why is this news? We saw her grow up on TV and we clearly know what their hair looks like before they went the straight route. Really?

Wish people understood how much they make you feel like a freak show when they carry on about touching your hair. The ones that ask politely I don’t mind, but the ones that make a lot of noise and a big show of it drawing people over to you from far and wide drive me insane. yes I have 4 C African heritage hair, yes it grows, yes mine is super big and wide. I know its a shock to some people that hair like mine can grow so tall and wide but still…
