A midweek moisture regimen
There is a statement that I live by, and it is if you stay ready you never have to get ready. This can bee applied to your hair because if you keep your hair moisturized then you never have to deal with extreme dryness and deterioration. For that reason moisturizing your hair mid week is often something most naturals resort to and the process tends to be very deliberate and as such very effective.
Your mid-week regimen
Depending on when your wash day is your hair will tend to start getting dry at around day 3 and you want to be ready for your hair when it indicates that it needs a boost of moisture.
One of my favorite moisturizers of all time is Aloe Vera Juice* and water in a spray bottle (stored in the fridge) because Aloe Vera is a complete moisturizer that adds vitamins* and nutrients to the hair keeping it strong and smooth.
Here are the steps for your midweek moisture session:
- Divide your hair into 6 sections and finger tangle
- Spray your hair with aloe vera and water liberally on each section of hair.
- Use your favorite leave in conditioner* and moisturize every section
- Use a butter or oil as a sealant over each section
- Twist each section
- Cover your hair for 20 minutes with a plastic bag for extreme moisture
When your 20 minutes are up, cover your twists with a satin bonnet* and head to bed. For reference, watch Laila’s video below to see exactly how this regimen is done:
If you deep condition weekly you may not have to moisturize your hair midweek but for some hair types and just depending on how you style your hair for that week, you might have to do this regimen.
Trimming your hair
You might be wondering what does trimming your hair have to do with moisture retention and we do not blame you because it is odd but hear me out.
Back in January, we gave you 10 reasons your hair is dry and in that post, we made the point that the only way to fix dry brittle and damaged ends are to trim them.
The reason you want to keep your hair trimmed is because old ends that are splitting and dry tend to be porous lose moisture just as fast as you add it.
There is nothing you can do when your hair is so damaged that it no longer retains moisture, it tangles and breaks easily. Trimming your hair keeps the healthy portions of your hair strand on your head and gets rid of the brittle ends that can spread to other areas of your hair if you do not remove them.
When you get a good trim you will find that your hair retains moisture longer because the stronger portions of your hair are less porous in comparison to the dryer damaged areas. The idea is to keep more of the healthy hair on your head and let go of the bad portions to help your hair to retain moisture longer.
Final thoughts
From this post, you can determine the best course of action for your dry brittle hair and if nothing seems to work we would also suggest strengthening your strands so that they are better able to remain moisturized. Read this post here on how you can strengthen your strands.
Additionally, you should know that adding color to your hair, any sort of chemical treatment including relaxers or direct heat will lead to dry hair so you may have to employ some of the methods discussed even more often than if your hair was virgin.
The point is once you know how to handle your dry hair woes you will find that everything else in your natural hair journey will fall right into place.
