3. Reshape your fro
So the big issue with the awkward stage is your fro being a weird length and so you feel like none of your styles are coming out right, correct? So why not reshape it! Without chopping that is.
Try doing a twist out on the top half of your hair but doing finger coils on the sides and back. Finger coils are known to result in shrinkage and this is especially handy when trying to keep an appearance of a tapered fro. The same can go for any hair. Play around and shape your hair by adding a little gel, finger coiling and shrinking it.
Bobby pins* are also a natural’s best friend during this awkward stage. It is so easy to pin up different sections of your hair that just aren’t doing right, giving your hair a new shape.
4. Protective styles
I am always one to tell you that if your are frustrated with your hair leave it alone! Especially if you are one who is like me who can easily go in the bathroom and just start chopping away without anyone or anything stopping you, only to leave you mad at yourself the next day for giving in.
Take a break from your hair. Get a protective style such as braids or try wearing wigs* for a couple of months. This way you can still care for your hair and not give in and cut it.
Also over manipulation of hair can lead to breakage and weakened strands so leaving it alone for a while can help hair growth, thus getting through that awkward stage a little quicker.
I think I got so caught up in wearing the same style all the time that this awkward stage is actually forcing me to get out of my comfort hair zone and expand! I know it is all a lot easier said than done but we will get through this stage for it is only for a little while. Embrace it!
What are you doing or what have you done to get through your awkward hair length stage?

I needed this two days ago. I hadn’t cut my hair since January after going natural 2 years last month. I kept my hair short during that time. I was trying to grow it out, saw a lot of progress got frustrated, tapered down the sides and back .. I love it but, I should’ve had more patience…I’ll try again?

I just got to this stage. I’ve started doing flat twists in various patterns and pinning the ends. It looks very chic and professional.
