Every time I meet a parent with a kid who has curly hair, I ask them “how is your child’s curly hair routine?” Some respond that it’s easy and they are very successful in keeping their child or children preoccupied while washing and detangling their hair. Others respond, it’s difficult, my child runs around the house trying to escape leave-in conditioner* and the wide-tooth comb.
I myself have a little bit of both easy and not so easy when it comes to my daughter’s curly hair routine. Now my daughter is more relaxed when sitting and letting my husband or I detangle her hair. We make sure she is busy by watching some of her favorite kid shows or doing arts and crafts or just playing with a few dolls while we gently detangle her locks. Unfortunately, the hardest part is still washing her hair.
She does not like water running through her ears or eyes. We’ve tried to roll up wash cloths and towels to cover her ears and eyes, still to no avail. Screaming bloody murder is still her forte as she’d rather now get it detangled than wash her hair.
I’ve tried a few tips from online articles and magazines on washing your child’s hair. One thing that seems to work a bit has been washing her dolls hair first then washing her hair. Using a little bit of child psychology (the fact that her doll doesn’t cry or move around when washing her hair) seems to calm her down as she takes part in the washing, she is learning to wash and take care of her own hair.
I’m learning to give my daughter a semblance of independence as it comes to hair washing, therefore making it easier for her and me. Has anyone else had difficulties with washing or styling their child’s hair? What has been working for you? Please share in the comments.

Not sure how old your daughter is but mine is still small enough to lay across my kitchen counter. I use the little padded baby changing mattress that goes on baby changing tables. Not the ones that fold up in a diaper bag but the thicker ones usually in the baby room for her to lay face up on and is water proof so it makes wash day much more easier and comfortable for her.
