Going to someone’s home to get your hair styled is nothing new. There are many talented at-home-stylists out there whether they’re licensed or not. Some feel like it’s a good way to save money by doing their craft at home instead of having the expense of renting out a booth in a salon.
While I typically don’t discriminate if you’re good at what you do, my first at-home-stylist experience will most likely have been my last.
This was actually a couple of years ago when I was looking to get a sew-in as I slowly transitioned to natural. I already had a short pixie but just needed my natural coils to grow a little longer so I could chop.
The look I was going for was a nice bob situation and when I originally began my search I found that most were charging on the upwards side of ~$200 for a full sew in and cut. This was definitely over my budget at the time so I browsed styleseat, Craigslist, and Instagram for stylists in my area that could do a good job for a lesser price.
I found what I thought was the perfect girl who would only charge $80 for the sew-in and cut! Unbeatable right?! She had tons of photos on her Instagram of her work so I knew what she was capable of, and she had already done the exact style I wanted on another client. Perfect!
As I approached her apartment I felt a little apprehensive but I reassured myself everything would be okay.
I knocked and I heard her yell from inside that the door was open so I let myself in. First thought, how did she know I wasn’t a serial killer?!
Any who, I walked in and the place was a mess. She was still working on another client and said I could have seat. I tried to control my blank stare as I moved books and tracks of weave to the side of the couch so I could try to sit down.
45 minutes later she finally finished up with the other girl and said she was ready for me. I had plans later that night with my best friend so I said a quick prayer to myself that this wouldn’t take long.
I sat in her chair and she quickly got to work. We had a good conversation just getting to know each other and then she said she needed to eat. This girl went in the kitchen and cooked up a full meal of fried chicken wings and potato wedges. I can’t lie it smelled sooo good, but on the inside I was like ma’am if you don’t come finish my hair!
