This week in hair pettiness, word on the street is that Beyonce is being accused of cultural appropriation and you will never believe why.
A few days ago the daily mail highlighted Beyonce’s new hair (as seen above). The picture was cute at best, Beyonce often uses her Instagram to share fashion pictures like most of us do on our own timelines.
The commentors on the article gave their opinion on the photo, bad and good, which was fine. Then they started accusing Bey of cultural appropriation because of her bangs …and we were like Huh!?
Her bangs!? Yes you read right because if you did not know, bangs actually belong to white people. This is such a stupid tit for tat attempt that is so petty I am almost ashamed to write about it.
Check out some of the comments:
Funny how Beyoncé sporting a blonde wig*/weave is not classed as ‘cultural appropriation’ hey? One rule for one….
So Kylie Jenner got a hardtime about her cornrows yet Beyoncé can emulate the Blonde Barbie doll look and it’s ok – double standards
MaryQuiteContrary:
She appears to be appropriating white culture.
Me in London said:
For someone who is proud of her heritage, she’s looking very white these days.
Now we get it, we have seen comments about Beyonce appearing white washed before because of how fair she looks when doing branding work for some magazines in comparison to her actual complextion. (That is a whole other story)
However we had no idea that bangs were a white thing? I mean slow clap at that attempt at making a mute point, it just goes to show that there needs to be a class on exactly what culture appropriation is.
Lets dumb it down a bit using cornrows since that seems to be a hot topic. Cornrows have been a part of the black community forever and as such we are known for the hair style.
Now if we take the same style and place it on Kylie Jenner, the style gets praised as ‘new’ ‘hip’ and on ‘trend’ with no reference to the history of it and where it came from. That is, put very simply, appropriation!
As a matter of fact there is no way a black girl with cornrows will ever make the cover of vogue with a tremendous back story in comparison to a white girl who wore corn rows. #facts.
Even though that was a cute attempt at justifying appropriation I would hate to think that white or European culture boils down to the side swept bangs on Barbie.
Beyonce did not borrow bangs from the Europeans and as a result got the cover of some popular magazine nor was she chosen to strut down a run way showing off how “barbie like” her bangs are. She simply put a photo on Instagram! – Please read something about cultural appropriation before typing on the internet… Ever!
Me personally, black women or not I’m not defending any of those celebs, a lot of them bleach for lighter complexions, fix their noses bone straight & whatever else simply just to glorify the European way of “beauty” as for some of the comments ?☕️ this tea is bloody fabulous
that’s not appropriation. Thats just assimilation. Know the difference
Let’s put it this way if white people want to get mad about the “assimilation” of “their culture” by a black woman that’s none of my business, if they saw the assimilation they would have addressed it as such. However They want to call it cultural appropriation by all means they have every right to just because you’re aware of the difference between the 2 doesn’t mean you see things from their perspective.
Beautifully stated
Girl please!!! Bye! It’s celebrities not a competition of “European styles” y’all ain’t perfect!
Its still not cultural appropriation though.
She been wearing blonde for over ten years. This is nothing new
blonde hair due to her L’Oreal contract lol when will they get nobody wants to be them
If people can lose their minds over Kylie Jenner wearing corncows then they should lose their minds over beyonce always promoting white-blonde culture 😉
Nicki Minaj should take notes too! 😉 always using white culture and not crediting it 😉
???
It’s a wig people. Must be a slow week in news… Smh
Real slow day. Pick are so quick to pick apart people. Black people are the main ones who does this s**t. I’m sure that idiot wasn’t that, they’ll find something else wrong with her. Good grief! I’m sure that they wouldn’t like it if someone was judging them
Last time I checked, she was grown and can do whatever she wants to do with her life. People look to pick a part whatever a grown person wants to do with their own life. Maybe we look at the hypocritical, judgmental people’s lives and give them a taste of their own medicine. Shake up those skeletons in their closets
Stop it !!! She can’t win for losing!!!
I like it&she looks pretty.
If we’re all finding pointless and petty things to be offended about that have been going on for years .. burnt toast pisses me off and it should be banned.
LOL!!!
They have a point. If the shoe was on the other foot, we’d have something to say.
I don’t give a f**k about what they say she’s beautiful period you jealous f**kyou
i guess they have not heard that assimilation to a dominant culture is NOT the same thing as appropriating another culture as your own.
Can she just live? #geeez
We’ve all worn bangs WTF!
Appropriating white culture…what a f**king joke. And I’m no Beyonce fan by any means.
to write that about Bey is just ignorance gone to seed.
she is beautiful. and those comments are ignorance gone to seed
Who freaking cares it’s a pack of hair or half pack n next week r tomorrow she will wear another style we all know this chick is bad so say something else plez
Whateva she isn’t black
Let’s keep it real this is a white woman look!
Not true, so you are saying that black women are born with blonde hair and white skin…..really who in the hell are you fooling? I prefer to keep it real in life.
And prefer to stay black and beautiful the way God made me.
Do we not know what cultural appropriation is?
Cultural appropriation is when a member of a dominate Culture takes features or characteristics from a culture that has been systematically oppressed (by the dominant culture) and passes it off as their own. Beyonce, as powerful as she is, is still apart of the minority culture. And we all know as a minority you have to assimilate to the dominant culture in order to…well, survive. The whiter she looks, the more appealing she is….the more money she makes… i understand their viewpoint but by definition…nope. this aint it.
We must draw the line between assimilating and appropriation, appreciation and juxtaposition. as humans we will emulate and recreate culture to appease our sensibilities. this should not be a testament of disrespect … rather an evolutionary necessity to enjoy the bliss that is human culture.
let’s be real!she makes blonde look good. Period
And blonde hair is NOT indigenous nor is it exclusive to Europeans, who I might add are a mixture of many different cultures! This is so ridiculous!
silly silly silly still being racist about of all things her bangs seriously
Zzzzzz…. oh what are we talking about lol
It’s kinda messed up because she has other cultures in her family besides black. Not fair.
Oh please !! We all wore our bangs like that , it must be a slow day !!
In in other news Obama is trying to turn the United States into a socialist country
…but beyonce and dat hair tho.
This is a hair blog. What was the purpose of that?
You’re right . My point is people are treating this like it’s a huge discussion deal when it’s not. I don’t care to give celebrities more attention Then they already get
Maybe I could have used a hair related example…but still remains the same. Celebrity changes hair slightly…DISCUSS.
Not about her changing her hair at all.
petty bs!!
I never understood why people have issues with other people’s hair. It’s hers whether she bought it, dyes it, cut it, straightens it or set it on fire. As grown women, we wear our hair however we want to.
I’m no fan of bey but in her case it’s important because she’s in the public a lot and she has to appeal to the public as well as the people who write her checks so if she want her products to sell (albums movies watever) she has to please both parties if we don’t like what she does or how she acts we don’t buy her products or support her if she don’t appear a certain way white media and the “people who matter” won’t put her out there for us to see and I think this article just pointing out that they see the change in her cuz u can’t lie she’s way different from wen she came out and the times have nothing to do with that she could have stayed classic her just my opinion
People are silly always in someones business about what they are doing to their hair people are obsessed over it and need a life
I do t believe any of this dumbness…it’s dumb…..who cares….we don’t pay her bills…leave her alone
Why can black women accuse of white women of black appropriation but whites can’t accuse a black woman of white appropriation? Black people are backwards.
Do you even understand the term?
It was a rhetorical question! Obviously you don’t, judging by your rather ill informed comment!
I don’t know you so how could I know what you meant. Also I asked the very same question you asked me so I don’t see what the problem is.I stated an OPINION and you disagree with it ,so what. Yes my comment was illinformed.
White people have set the standards of societal norms over the years. They can accuse us/Beyonce of appropriation all they want but in reality it’s them/society that has made black women feel uncomfortable with their own natural beauty, hard to get jobs and in instances maintain them because of their hair, just to name a few. They (society) also have a tendency to act as if they have to throw terms back at us to minimize our issues and concerns to a minimum. I know, not all white people/all members of society aren’t messed up but a good chunk are.
All I did was state my opinion if anyone disagrees it’s OK I don’t care.
She didn’t parade the bangs claiming it is the newest style on the block, invented by her or by black ppl. Why is this Even a topic? They are misunderstanding the term “cultural appropriation”.
Is there anything they don’t intentionally misinterpret? #blacklivesmatter vs #alllivesmatter. racism vs reverse racism (one isn’t even a thing). Black power as opposed to white power… they like to play ignorant when it suits them even if they look completely foolish.
Neither did Kylie Jenner but people STILL lost their marbles over her cornrows..
Vivian N. Larsen I’m pretty sure the Kylie incident was a different issue, and not the way you just interpreted it. Mainly the difference in how the media portrays white people who don traditionally African and other ethnic styles, compared to the way they talk about black people who do the same. Again missing the point entirely! I would add that most ppl were furious with Kylie (and others) because they get so much positive attention for copying black culture, yet they do absolutely nothing (nor do they care) to support the movements that recognize the inequalities and systematic racism that black people are faced with on a daily basis!
LOL Bangs belong to white ppl now??? #dead
Come on people!!!
They want everyone that doesn’t look like them to meet their standards of beauty and when you do, it’s “white appropriation?” Da fuq.
I started wearing chinese bangs because I didnt have any edges. They are growing back now.
Foolishness.
Yall always starting some s**t smh shut tha f**k up, sooooo annoying why can’t I just wear my hair however I want without being accused of wanting to be white or not wanting to be black omfg
Wait! Somebody said something negative about the ‘Queen’?
loooooooooooooool
BS
hair colour is genetics not culture
White people are not the only people with blonde or silky hair. Only uneducated people would associate those qualities as only being possessed by Caucasian.
Case in point; Melanesian people
That is ridiculous!
Accused by whom. Flesh and blood. And we care because….my thoughts exactly!
As a little girl I can remember wearing bangs. I had know idea it was a white style. We wore them rolled tight to the front, loose to the right or left tapered behind the ear and cut flat to the forehead.
She’s bleached up, but she has to live with that #1 (otherwise why can’t a african woman wear her bangs/hair any kind of way) Caucasian women wear braids and that’s “high fashion” culture appropriation we would all be wearing our locks ?
Lmao. FOH! So how are women of color “supposed” to wear their bangs then? Must have forgotten to check my email! Smh
And I’m not a Beyonce fan. But her bangs are banging.
Oh please with the crap!
A black person wearing swept bangs is not cultural appropriation. Neither is a white person wearing cornrows. There is no significance attached to either style beyond it being a way to wear your hair. Now a non-Rastafarian wearing dreadlocks could be considered cultural appropriation because it is associated with specific values and beliefs within that culture that the wearer may know nothing about. A number of criteria need to be met before you have true cultural appropriation.
Smart. Best comment by far ??
There are quite a few lesser known groups that lock their hair as well. There is a non-rasta related group in India that has locked their hair for centuries.
Preach
Does this person know when we pressed our hair with a hot comb, women wore bangs, swoops, beehives etc back in the day? Who cares?
I mean Damn!! Not even a fan like that, but it’s cute and clearly she likes it! Have to criticize everything!
Ive been saying this for years…. she is a white man living in a black woman’s body…. her actions alone prove it.
Bangs aren’t even in white culture…
Guilty
Some ppl are failing to know the meaning of culture apporiation. Culture apporiation is talking ones culture and claiming it as your own and/ or to make money off of it. Bey wearing a white girl hairstyle is not culture apporiation but self hate. look at k Michelle. I seen a pic that she looked damn near white. In this European society in order go far “damn near white is always right.”
In my dr dre voice: f**k bangs yall can have em back! That’s the best they can come up with?
lol goes to salon yeah let me get those white girl bangs said no one ever
People need to learn the difference between appropriation and assimilation
Whatever people, who cares!!!?
We live in a crazy world everybody acting a fool over some hair if its not on your head dont stress about it
So…..what.
Can people stop with this appropriation crap? Cultures borrow things from each other all the time. Black people need to stop accusing white people of appropriating black culture. I see why these people are doing it, they got poked and their poking back. If people stop making accusations then most of this would stop. Simple as that.
Shut up!!! Beyonce is a trend setter changing her looks all the time!!! Kylie is dating tyga & feels it’s ok to do certain things like wearing cornrows but it really looks bad on her!!! #myopinion #imjussayin
Laughable bullmess.
Why does everything have to be about black or white. I really thought it was about bringing out the best of what we already have.
GTFOH
i think she is mixed so wouldn’t she just be showing her other half of her culture. u people need to stop tripping. get with the times no one needs to or i know i dont care as long as she feels good about herself. besides her husband is still drunk in love. GET A LIFE AND WORRY ABOUT DOING YOUR OWN HAIR SO YOU CAN EVEN START TO LOVE YOUSELF INSTEAD OF TRYING TO COMPETE. #NOCONTEST
i think we should start accusing the kardashions of black appropriation because of them trying to take the credits of black females natural looks……..oh wait, we will get called haters not only by white females but by fellow black men. then made to feel petty. talk about double standards. we will always get potraid as the bad ones. ever notice when we are judging white people a brother would come and bash us……..but ever see them comment when its us getting bashed though. what a world we live in
Beyonce proudly expect her African Roots do your research
Really? Who cares? Not me
Isn’t she Creole and Creole people are mixed race so she can rock bangs saying she can’t is a perpetuated enforcement of the one drop rule.
In appropriation you have a dominant people and oppressed people. When a cultural aspect of the oppressed people is taken by the dominant people without reverance to the oppressed and passed off as originating with dominant, then you have appropriation. It not just one culture claiming another’s identity it includes aspects of domination and oppression.Beyonce may have the Beyhive on her side , but she is not a culture or people herself.lol Knowing the true meaning of a word is the best way to avoid foolishness like this accusation.Bang on ✊?
OMG ridiculous.
Let’s stop this pettiness she’s been blonde forever get a grip
Love the new Due??
Wtf ?! Oh please ?
I’m not a follower of celebrity and stuff but isn’t she birracial…?
To the person who actually posted this topic. You should be demoted from your position. Your influencing the race card again, then when you look Beyonce is on TV explaining why she is wearing bangs like a white women. It’s just a hair trend styles, and nothing is wrong with that. Stop making a big deal into nothing.
Its amusing because Beyoncé is part white anyway…but is Iggie Azalea part black ???
don’t forget this woman is more pale now…she was always a light skin woman however she is so pale to the point where she has no melanin in her skin the more her skin got white the blonder her wigs got.
When are we going to put and end to this us vs. them bull shit. We are just people and it is just hair!!
Why do y’all keep reporting that. It’s not because of her “bangs” it’s because of her whole bleached blonde look. Stop trying to down play it. Yes it is ridiculous because blonde/blue is their epitome of beauty so it’s not cultural appropriation. However this isn’t about bangs either.
Thats just dumb forget about culture and heritige or history! Stop talking about raise! THIS IS THE FUTURE! We can where anything we want! We could look like who ever we want to look like! Stop Judgeing people for what they look like! We are all human beings period!
It’s all about the money! If you got it like that, you can sport whatever, whenever, and however you want. STOP HATING ON HER! I DON’T KNOW WHY PEOPLE SO WORRIED ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE’S APPEARANCES! #STEPYOURGAMEUP then maybe you can do it too! She looks great with blonde black or Green hair. So would Kylie Jenner. I love the corn rolls on her! People stop being petty, shesh!!!
There is no such thing as a white thing or a black thing or what ever thing! Its just a thing anyone can do period
This is not an issue. This is a “Get The Nuts Stirred Up” ploy. Some people will fall for anything.
Everyone should be proud of who they are. No more racism! This is the future where everyone can look like who they want to look like or ware what ever they want to ware period. There is no such thing as a white thing or a black thing or a Chinese thing. IT’S A HUMAN THING how about that! Stop Judgeing people about how they look or what they ware or what color they are! We are all humans and if you can’t get along with other people then you are not going anywhere in life period!
That’s weird black people are born with straight blonde hair as well and blue eyes! Foolish as hell!
I don’t understand how stupid people can be. Hair is hair people. We got to the freedom to wear our hair the way we want. No matter what race we are. People from all races wear weaves, dyes, and etc. I think people whomever criticized her should know that hair is hair. Plus Beyonce always switch up her hair. We should let people be.
Daily Mail is a satire site.
Enough of the nonsense! For crying out loud black people have been straightening their hair for years and white folks were wearing afros years ago, Some just had curly, kinky hair! Your blackness or whiteness or ethnicity is not defined by the texture of your hair. Sometimes a hairdo is just a hairdo!
She’s been a blond many times!!
Jesus CHRIST “bangs belong to white people” never heard such a BIG croc of S**T in my life!!!! That’s my comment on this subject. HATERS gonna HATE!!!!!
What?
This is stupid she has been wearing bangs for at least 10 years
Maybe she just likes bangs. Not everything is a conspiracy or denouncement of one’s race……
I saw 2 white women with dreadlocks yesterday. Are they wrong? I actually liked it. Am I wrong?
Just ridiculous!
Beyoncé is not nearly as bright to be that calculating. Face reality
Hahaha hahaha oh the irony.
UGH. *In my BCG Throwback/Vogue*
I DON’T UNDERSTAND, I DON’T UNDERSTAND, I DON’T UNDERSTAND *Dead drops*
I’m sure it isn’t just the bangs..
“…bangs actually belong to white people”. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
This is just too ridiculous. Leave Beyoncé alone. She’s a grown woman, and can wear her hair any way she chooses.
