Guuuuuurl! Ya’ll watch AfricanExport on YouTube right? Well the self professed queen of keeping it real big chopped and she had quite a message about it that we thought we had to share.
One of the things that AE said that I found profound is that the natural hair journey is now synonymous with a long hair journey and I agree with her when she says this is just not true. What if you do achieve your goals? What if you have always had long hair, does that mean your journey ends? A real journey is one with ups and downs, corners and straight lines so we love to see a woman embrace the long hair and embrace short hair as well.
So many of her followers showed her love and support the comments were overflowing with positive vibes because her hair cut is everything and her choice is her choice.
If you are struggling with doing the big chop or if you are just tired of your long shapeless hair, try getting a hair cut, Lord knows I am thinking about it and when you watch videos like this one, it just gives you the energy to do it.
Have you ever wondered what the thought process is like for a woman with long hair who wants to cut her hair short? We have three reasons a woman might decide it is time to big chop again.
1. Lifestyle – Lifestyle changes will sometimes dictate what you do with your hair. If you find yourself more focused on your physical health and just do not want to deal with your hair, you might decide it is time to chop.
2. The need for a style – There comes a time in a girls life when she would just rather have a cute style than just hair everywhere. It is almost the same as getting your eyebrows shaped, yes you are grateful for your brows but we want them to have a certain look. It is the same for our hair.
3. Damage – Damaged hair serves no purpose on your head, let us just be frank. You will cut your hair eventually so there is no point in prolonging the process.
Check out AE as she speaks candidly about her big chop:

You go girl – I love it! Had locs reaching the middle of my back and did a big chop to a TWA on Valentines Day. This was a lifetime change post migration.

I’m digging my big fluffy afro as much as she is digging her TWA and at the end of the day it should be about you like and feel good in.

I love it, I’ve been wearing a half wig while I decide the next chapter for my hair. I love short hair, but I’ve put on weight and I’m afraid my head may look too small with my larger body. I may just close my eyes and go for it! Thank you for the inspiration. It’s not about anyone else. Just me.

My hair was APL stretched and at the time I felt I needed a change. My nape area grows so fast and the top was growing slow so I had it shaped up to the nape in May of this year. I felt my hair was a little limp and not thick the longer it grew. Yes, i did regret cutting it a few weeks later, but it’s growing back and I’m loving the volume.

You are right I to have had long hair all my life. I decided twice to big chop the 1st time Feb.2013 to cut off my permed hair to go natural. The next big chop was just last week and I’m loving it. I had been told never cut my hair by my older family members and that stuck with me for years. But now I’m loving every minute of this twa and its all about what I want.

It’s true, you know. Most of these natural hair blogs (not necessarily this one in particular) are all about “hair length goals” or “length retention” or “how to grow your natural 4c hair to ankle length”, but what about some of us naturalistas that prefer our hair to be, um, eyebrow length? Scalp length? Is there no room for articles for us?
