Do you have type 4 hair? I do! Can I level with you guys a bit? When I was a little girl I used to hate my hair, I had no appreciation for it, I did not like the fact that it was fluffy or kinky* as we call it now. Where I am from like many of you, it was considered nappy and at that time, that was not a good thing.
I used to have curl envy, I wanted that soft straight hair that hung down and swung in the wind like other girls. I wanted to be like other girls!
When you are a child, conformity seems easier, it is always hard to be different because it meant that you would probably get cast out of the circle you want so much to be a part of.
These days I have grown to know and love my type 4 hair, I couldn’t imagine having anything else other than what I have. Do you want to know why? Don’t worry I am going to tell you.
I saw the below video on YouTube, and I loved the points she made because I can identify with them. This post is about showing a little appreciation for your hair and what you have regardless of curl pattern. Here are the 4 reasons I love my type 4 hair!
1. Mad definition
When you get that product and tool combination just right, you all know that your hair will remain in place and just as fly as it wants to be with shine, perfect mold and amaaaazing definition.
2. It has magic character
This is my favorite reason of all. Type 4 hair is magical because it grows up and out. You hair never looks thin, boring even when you have fine strands. You can literally demand a presence because your hair demands presence!
3. Shrinkage
The only problem I have with shrinkage is detangling, but tell me this, what hair on the planet can move from TWA to mid back length with just a switch in style? Shrinkage is the most deceptive and amazing thing known to the black girl and you have to appreciate that.
4. It is yours
Love your hair because it is YOUR hair, your God given crown that belongs to you and no one else. Sometimes we just have to stop and just be grateful for what we have because things could be very different.
If you have a head of hair, be thankful, just that simple.
Now it’s your turn, comment below on why you love your hair, type 4, type 3, type whatever!
I love my hair because it’s so versatile, I can do a wash n go or a twist out, bantu knots all in the same week and look completely different.

Type 4 hair is so beautiful to me I wish my hair was like that
I love my multiple curl patterns I love my 3c/4a hair my I love how it’s afro and curly . It’s fluffy like a pillow soft . It’s so versatile I can do many styles. It grows fast I love the tight curls so unique kinky and curly love it .
Preach! Be grateful for what you have because it could be very different. I’m happy to have hair on my head. I have friends and family with thinning edges, no edges, and bald spots. I may not have always been happy with my hair but I’ve always cared for her. I have fine strands but a lot of them and I wouldn’t trade my hair for nothing!

I love my hair because even after years of abusing it, it continues to thrive giving me continued opportunities to accept, love and nurture it. It’s like a forgiving kid – you learn so much from it (about it and about yourself on so many levels) and it just has this resilience to keep coming back. It’s fragile, yet strong enough to keep going (growing). I’m just glad I finally came to appreciate it so I can truly embrace and let it shine.
How do I find out what type hair I have?
