Some women believe that going natural is expensive. I can attest to the fact that it can get expensive if you use high end products and if I am to be honest many of the high end products do not work on our hair; they are just jars full of crap.
I can instantly name about 4-6 expensive brands that actually do miracles on natural and relaxed hair but they just might not be in our budget.
With that said there are some women who have learned to rely on what we can consider ‘controversial’ products to take care of their hair. We say they are controversial because they have less than perfect ingredients, they probably would not be personally recommended and they never come up on the ‘products to buy lists’.
1. Sulfur* 8 (or Sulfur* Lite)
You’ve heard of this I am sure. Yes…remember that medicated grease in the yellow container? We usually slap this on the scalp to rid the scalp of dandruff.
It works, no lie, but it stinks…right? Wrong. Not anymore. They have modified their products now and it is quite impressive actually. They have transformed their product into clean, fresh smelling sprays which gives the same healing effect the grease would give.
2. Suave Professionals Naturals Conditioner
This cheap brand is actually pretty good. It has a thick consistency and personally I don’t mind this conditioner at all. It makes the hair really soft. The Suave Professionals Naturals Almond/Shea Butter* conditioner is the truth and ranges from one to two dollars.
3. Africa’s Best
The Africa’s Best moisturizing lotion provides the hair with just the right amount of moisture. Now, the downside of this product is it has parabens, but if you’re not one to worry so much about ingredienst then you might be able to give this one a pass.
4. Blue Magic Coconut Oil*
You remember this brand as a child? It has been around for centuries. If you check a natural’s product cabinet right now you might find a jar.
Many of us are closet grease users but you aint heard that from me! *wink*
Great on a twist out as a sealant…just sayin! Lol And this is from an all natural product user.
I used to be loyal to that Ulra Sheen. Don’t use it anymore though.
I haven’t used grease since going natural
Bahaha – memories
This actually put a smile on my face! Lol childhood memories 🙂
I used these back in the ’70s! Oh yeah, afro sheen also!
I remember LOL
Yooo that green Ultra Sheen and the yellow Hair Food. Whuuuut!!! Lol those are the 2 I will fall back on in a real pinch.
Oh that smell…..
Those products grew more long locks that Kinky Curly Knot Today mess. LOL
tell me about it. i sued dax in my hair and my hair grew very thick and long. NOw i am using these so called healthy things out there and my hair barely making it. So i went down to my trusty beauty supplies store and go me some.
I tried to do a press with a hot comb. Fail and I bet it was because I did not use my Ultra Sheen products. LOL
I still used old school queen Helena conditioner. These new products are just fancy packaging sometimes.
I still use Blue magic
I have a jar of Blue Magic in my baby barrette basket
Yep like it when I wear box braids
I use to use the green one to this
No way!
I still use it. Keeps my hair moisturized
Omg lol , I still use it and mix it in with my gel , like my homemade edge control lol
I still use Ultra sheen in my daughter’s hair
Used to use not anymore though
I have used it to
Ultra sheen is the best and still use it today, better than any other pressing/flat iron stuff I have ever used! My mom used to slay my hair with this and a pressing comb.
My mom used to use Ultra Sheen, too, as well as some other greases like Dixie Peach. Blue Magic wasn’t around yet.
I use it on my daughter’s hair
Still use this to this day lol
Yes Lord. Thank you Jesus for Ultra Sheen (Green)
If it works, well it works !
It works
That’s good stuff
It werkz ! pls remake it less greasy 🙂
Blue magic baby!!!
Can’t nobody take my Blue Magic!!! Love it, gives my hair an awesome shine, pink oil moisturizer, oil spray and compliments, ‘er’day!!!!
I went back to grease in winter 2013. Breakage & nape & temple problems. Blue magic & Pink Oil as well as Carol’s Daughter & Qhemet Biologics. then KinkyCurly wash n goes in summer. Now, after a January trim, I’m full time Old School & my nape & temples filled in. I use WEN Fig or Shea Moisture shampoos, MegaTek as deep conditioner every week, PinkOil lite mixed with JBCO or original Pink Oil & seal with BlueMagic bergamot or Super Sure Gro. Sometimes I spray with S Curl as either leave in or daily moisturizer. Sometimes all i need is just water. Hair is thriving like mad; nape has grown 2 more inches, MegaTek has stopped most breakage & the PinkOil & BlueMagic keep moisture in.I’m going on a 2 week vacation this summer & all I’m taking is shampoo, PinkOil, & BlueMagic. May take Megatek & S Curl for insurance in case weather is hot & dry. I used to use PinkOIl ,Afro Sheen & LeKair in the 70s on my afro. Also used Alberto VO5 blue for gray, white, & silver blonde hair. Found out it gave jet black hair a wicked shine !
My mama used this greasy on my long, thick braids … Worked great
My mom used this in my hair when I was little now I use it in my daughters hair. 🙂
Still use it today and I see much hair growth!
Me too! Burnt ears and kitchen!
I still use my blue magic but Im loving the coconut scent!
I use Ultra Sheen all the time. Love that stuff
Wow this takes me back.
Still use Blue Magic to this day. Love it. I have to super grow with coconut oil.
This has worked the Best for me…
I use the Indian hemp blue magic. Just brought another jar today. I mixed cantu shea butter leave in conditioning in a spray bottle with water. Used as a detangler, sectioned my hair, greased the sections with Indian hemp blue magic. Then i flat iron. Bone straight. I swear it works
Oh my! got some ultra sheen and blue magi in the cabinet right now!! don’t forget your royal crown, sulfer 8, and pink oil (the original formula)! lol
Blue magic has been in the home like forever!
I still use Blue Magic and it works perfect for me
Haven’t used grease on my hair in 20 years. Lol
Didn’t work for me. Or because my mama didn’t have a clue on how to take care of hair.
Blue magic is in my bathroom closet now!
I’m a manager at Top Beauty Supply in NC and yes….our shelves are stocked with these much requested items…we sell out at times…old school items work…that’s why they are still around.
The Targets around here started carrying Royal Crown,Murray’s, Blue Magic,S Curl, & both versions of Pink Oil starting last summer. And they vanish off the shelves, too ! Old School is TRIED & TRUE & it WORKS !! Been around for 40 years or so. The Asian BSS carry them by the TON
this stuff works the old products are always the best products that’s makes our hair healthier !
Blue Magic, is nothing but the real deal. I still use it …..
NO THANKS… . VASELINE IN A JAR ….DISGUISED WITH
I still use Ultra Sheen sometimes it is a good poduct, when I wear my hair natural I use STAY SOFT FRO, that is an old product but it does the trick.
I still use that, too. Used it on my 70s afro. Everybody did. keeps hair soft
i rather use this instead of shea butter…my hair hates shea butter.
Always the best!
Blue magic was a staple in my house for YEARS!!!!
My mom and sister night still use it.
If I run out of my black castor oil, almond oil and argon oil mix I will fall back on it.
Love this grease, grew up with it…
Yup. have a jar now. Great for hair care
I’ve been rocking Blue Magic for a good 20 plus years
Sulfur 8 is my shiznyee
Mom used that on my hair, too. That & Glover’s Mange. Both STUNK like mad but I had long healthy braids
Blue magic mixed with olive oil. Yaasssss!! Grew our hair!
Which Blue magic do you use to mix with olive oil
My mom used both on us she also used this stuff called “nature’s blessing” which comes in a glass jar I still use it til this day . . .
It grew the mess out of our hair! I loved it when she greased our heads!!!
I still use on my hair..
.have to pick up a jar tomorrow
Still use it RIGHT till this day.ALWAYS have
Never again, not a fan of the ingredients
Remember Dax…hmmmm that used to smell bad..
I occasionally use grease on my twists in the winter. It gives amazing results.
Oh yes!
I don’t use these because they are too heavy for my hair, but my sister does and her hair is thick. Just depends on your hair and preference
The best
Hahaha yh smaller portions. Pea size
Dax
Ultra sheen green yes
You know it! Lol.
None to both to thick for my hair…
Right product right color, can’t go wrong.
Hmmm lol
I can smell it just looking at it
Just disgusting
Lol
The only thing I would turn to would be the Africa’s best lotion. I used it before and was fine. Moisturizing and didn’t have cones. But I was shocked that it had parabens but I had finished the bottle already but it was great cheap moisturizer. It was better than some moisturizers I have paid more money for
Love it, love the smell. Of blue magic
And Dixie Peach remember???
My mom used Dixie peach on my hair ! Loved that smell !
I just found Dixie Peach & got some. Seems different; not so strong a smell, & a bit heavier than I remember. Found it here http://myhouseofbeauty.com/ . It was discontinued by the company several years ago but there’s some still left floating around. White guys like Elvis & Johnny Cash used to use it on their pompadours in the 50s & 60s. I use it on my ends sometimes. Only got 2 jars ; don’t want to use them up since they’re rare.
Sound like my mama back in the day lol i was so glad when i was over doing my own hair lol
I’m glad I’m educated about what I put on my hair as well as in my body…these days! I remember using blue magic and dax, ultra sheen, royal crown, I grew up using these products as a child…….but, now I understand that petroleum comes from crude oil!
Yes but petroleum & mineral oil are the main ingredients in BABY OIL !! They are purified & refined to cosmetic grade & are perfectly safe. for our hair. All this anti grease mania was just a ploy to get us to use the new EXPENSIVE products. I love the new conditioners, hair steamers, & the addition of shea butter & other new oils…and the BLACK OWNED companies, but when it comes to sealing in moisture you can’t beat Blue Magic,Dax, & other greases our moms used
I have a question and I want everybody to think about what I’m about to ask!!!??? Why are these products specifically marketed to black females only? Have you read the ingredients? Can you read and understand the ingredients that are listed? Do you know that these products contain cancer causing chemicals?
They aren’t just aimed at blacks ! During the 50s,Whites also used petroleum & mineral oil products to slick down their hair for pompadours & slicked down hairstyles. Royal Crown & Murrays. I used to use Alberto VO5 blue hair dressing ( gave me awesome shine on my jet black hair!) & Vitapointe back in the day on my afros because I have fine soft hair & they were lighter than many of the greases aimed at blacks. I have heard that Elvis Presley & Johnny Cash both used Royal Crown.
Whoop whoop! Now we know that back in the day when mama used this we had hair like Rudy Huxtable! Lol… We act like now that we can read the labels that we’re above certain “ingredients.” Bunch of damaged heads needing to go back to the old school tried and true maybe?…
YUP !
My mom used Sulfur 8, Dixie Peach, & Apex pressing oil. Blue Magic wasn’t out yet. I had very healthy hair. I’ve gone back to grease in winter since 2013 when it was so harsh & Qhemet & Carol’s Daughter couldn’t handle it. I used Blue Magic to seal over th
ose butters & creams
U can’t go wrong with Blue Magic!
lol it’s not expensive to go natural all you gotta do is exactly like your momma and grandmother did when you were little and they were little wash your hair comb it out and grease it and braid it up and leave it alone and it will grow like weeds mine has all I do is pin the braids in a pretty updo and that’s it on the regular basis of course put rollers in when I wanna have curls and wear it down it’s not expensive at all lol like she said can’t go wrong with blue magic but I like the coconut kind because it smells good ☺
Well if you’ve been straightening and perming your entire life basically you do go natural because it’s unnatural for you to be natural
Vedejah your already natural your just giving your hair a chance to become in it natural state
I understand that but if your entire life you have been perming and straightening you are not natural because it is foreign to you your body is not used to not having the alteration attached so that is your natural with a perm or whatever either way it doesn’t matter either way
Damn let her shine…this is her post, smh. I understand what you are saying Vedejah
Lol ???????????????????????????????????????? just take care of your hair is the point
Everyone can’t do grease in their hair
Doesn’t matter whatever you use to seal in moisture hair doesn’t like to be handled much meaning it doesn’t like being brushed often combed manipulated all the can cause splitting and breakage
For real they were doing something right.
Vedejah, I use the coconut blue magic, too! After trying all kinds of products, I, like you, had to go back to my roots. ???? I use it on my daughters’ hair, too. Love it!
I love blue magic
I love blue magic coconut oil, I use it every day!!
I also use Royal Crown.
Oh gosh no thts no good. The ingredients
My hair does better with this product. I was raised on Royal Crown, Sulfur 8, Ultra Sheen and believe it or not people also used Vaseline.
Remember, the responses are from many generations and different type of hair textures. What may work for you doesn’t necessarily work for me. It’s about yourself and not a name brand and price.
Love it
Haven’t used grease in YEARS
I did the same thing but I wanted to experiment and see if it would help in the winter months to hold moisture and I can say I am pleased with the results
My either. I whip shea butter with natural oils and I love it.
Carline Blue Magic!!!
Yes I remembered
Read the article and I’m still trying to figure out what makes these products controversial?!
The ingredients. Some have parabens and other stuff that’s supposed to be bad for your hair
Most naturals ban petroleum on their hair because it is not natural and it is heavy on the scalp
Gotta jar of ultra sheen on my dresser right now!
Love this stuff I keeps some in my hair bucket best thing to use when flat ironing hair.
I don’t think that’s a good idea…but to each his own.
You got your hair pressed with a crease back in the day
You got your hair pressed with a crease back in the day
I love em both, keep my bathroom stocked up!
Ultra Sheen Even though I’ve been using three trees lately
Ultra Sheen Even though I’ve been using three trees lately
Kourtney Mckinney-got both in the cabinet and use them faithfully 🙂
No and no again, this stuff is garbage. It’s full of chemicals…. blue dye…. and people are putting this on their scalps… being absorbed into your blood
I heard grease isn’t good to use because it clogs up the pores…. My daughter has natural hair but I’m having a hard time keeping her hair mostirized and her end from getting split. Should I revert back to grease?
Blue magic is the truth, but I use Ultra Sheen too.
Use pure shea butter hair will grow like wild fire and stay moisturised.
Im full black and my hair is mid back using it
With grease never grew that much
Blue magic is the best
No, Shea Moisture has a kids line you can use. Walmart, Target and Walgreens sale it. Its really good, I also like As I Am, you can find this line at those stores as well. I’ve been natural for 8 years! Say no to creamy crack! Lol
Yes and try not to shampoo to often it drys the hair out, you can use conditioner instead to wash the hair. It cleans the hair just the same and keeps the moisture the hair needs…
I just use olive oil, grease attracted dirt and weighed hair dowm, oil is not as thick and I’ve noticed I don’t have to use it often and zero dandruff now.
Try Jamaican black castor oil or products with it in there. Shea moisture has a great line and a little goes a long way. Extra virgin coconut oil or products with it in there are great for low porosity hair too which it sounds like your daughter has. Their coconut and hibiscus styling milk is awesome and smells great. I get it for my sons and they love it! Water is the only way to moisturize hair so use products that list water as the first ingredient. Grease suffocates the hair and the follicle because of the waxes (parabens) and mineral oil in it which causes split ends and breakage and will not help her to retain length. Try cowashing every other week and never comb her hair while it’s dry. I wish you luck.
Who uses grease in 2017?! That stuff is made to kill your hair and make people that don’t even have our hair type rich! I didn’t even use grease in ’97 let alone 2017
My mom does and she uses it on her feet and sometimes skin ????????
Blue Magic is still a life saver.
You have to wash grease out with a shampoo not a conditioner. Conditioner will not fully remove grease frok your hair because it’s a thick product. I would wash it out weekly then deep condition. If her ends are split cut them
My mom and me been using it for years and still do.
Blue Magic…”THE BOMB” can’t beat it????
Oils do not moisturize. Oils are used as a sealant. Skip shampoo if you don’t have product build-up and just “wash” with a conditioner. Also deep condition (30 mins no heat/ 15 mins with heat) hair & cover with a plastic cap…even an old grocery bag works! Before styling apply leave-in conditioner, hair moisturizer (shea butter, almond butter, etc.), and seal all of that with the oil (jojoba, coconut, papaya, castor, etc.) and style. Loss of protein in the hair, among other things, may cause split ends. Apply a protein treatment (Aphogee – choose from a few different ones). Always detangle hair from the ends up. Limit use of heat tools and be gentle when styling so as not to cause additional breakage. Always cover hair with a satin/silk bonnet/scarf or sleep on a satin pillow. I hope this info helps!
everybody hair different but coming from person who transitoned to natural and been natural for quite some time now yes theres all kind of oils out there and yes i suggest stay away from grease….she most likely has high porosity ….my hair eats up alot moisture and use breaks off what i do is do deep condition and i purchased a moisturizer that works good for my hair and moisturize it daily even when braided up and i also apply high cholesterol olive oil to my hair
and also her hair is most likely dry and brittle due to lack of nutrients to her roots pay attention to what you putting in her hair that could be what causing it break off and switch to something suitable ..read back of labels before you purcahhse
Blue magic coconut hair conditioner, love it!
Been using the Black Magic Coconut, and I really enjoy it and the scent
Sister Shontal Poole and Jeanie Smiley I remember you both loved this stuff! Do you still use it?
Ummmm no. I can smell this now. Damn Vaseline with coloring. And I feel like you slicked your hair down a few good times lol
blur magic + crisco + chitlins
I have 3 of these in my cabinet right now.
Just did my twist with blue magic
Hi….My name is Shatera and I still use “Blue Magic” and “Queen Helene”. My scalp said “It’s magically delicious”. My hair is flawlessdotcom and may I add…healthy
Blue Magic that’s a brand name; Like Pepsi, that’s a brand name. I stand behind it, I guarantee it. They know that even if they don’t know me any more than they know the chairman of General Mills…..my man….my favorite grease ✊
I still use it 🙂
Petroleum, mineral oil, synthetic oils clog pores and leaves residue.
I love ultra sheen, blue magic is too heavy for my fine hair.
I’ve avoided grease for years and spent so much money trying to find the right products for my hair. My hair drys out and splits easily. I’ve tried the whole porosity thing, natural products, not so natural products, protective styling, everything. I have a son now and I don’t have time to go through 80 steps on wash day. So I cut back on the number of products I used becasue the one thing that has save my hair after all these years is hair grease. After I apply my products I use a small amount on my ends to seal everything in and I never have to re moisturize until wash day. And I have noticed a change in breakage after only a few days. I use Blue Magic coconut oil and after I run out I’m going to make my own hair grease.
Black dax is the best to me
this brings me right back, and the funny thing is when mama used it my hair grew. I think i still have this a part of my hair products as back up.
It’s not a backup for me. Everything else is a catch up. Lol
#ifitaintbrokedontfixit
Never use grease anymore, or pink hair oil. Shea moisture curl cream, water, black castor oil.
Never
No way use shea butter
I still buy Blue magic my mom used it on our hair as kids and it still does the job
I cant use this makes my hair stick together
Yes yes yes especially the African pride
You should be doing the LOC method
Leave in conditioner
Oil
Cream
Oil doesn’t moisturize. It locks in whatever is there. So if it’s dry it’s gonna lock it in.
Also no shampoos with sulfates
My mom still uses blue magic. She uses it on her hair and feet
So do I!!!!..my kids shine bright like a diamond????????????
Invest in a good conditioner (Deva curl or Quaid) also use a leave it conditioner, use a thick styling cream like real shea butter for her ends. H2O = moisture spray very lightly every other night .
Dont forget the bergamot hair grease!
People use this ??
Curly Kit
Blue Magic Coconut!
I wonder if any ladys on here can help me ,I’m mixed race so my hair is fizzie and couse i don’t know what to use for my hair ?
It’s really difficult to advice without actually touching your hair. My advice though to look into Cantu products. They do stuff for mixed hair textures. Also a water based leave in conditioner and natural liquid oils are fantastic for all hair types.
I wonder if any ladys on here can help me ,I’m mixed race so my hair is fizzie and couse i don’t know what to use for my hair ?
I steal use the blue magic today love it.
Still use Blue Magic despite all the oils & puddings etc. And I like it
AMEN
blue magic …moms like ultra sheen
Petroleum oil is the destruction of our hair.
No! Think of it this way. When you’re thirsty do you drink oil?
Water based leave in conditioner, and seal with a natural oil.
Trina Lynn, stay away from this stuff..lol
Hey, sometimes you gotta go with what you know! LOL
It gave me dandruff real bad back then now I only use oils
I try oils but they don’t last so I have to use them daily they don’t cost much but still lol id like it to last longer than a day
Hey, most of our parents used this on us as children and we had hair down out backs, it was good then, still good now.
Right…all this new stuff is just a way for some company to make money , like we were all walking around with dry TWAs . The sad thing is how many fell for it
lol yes I remember my eldest son when he was about 2 smothering it all over his face and on my silk bed sheets lol
I still have a jar of blue magic here in my house. Lol!!
I brought the ultra sheen yesterday
Because they work.
Why are they controversial? Different strokes for different folks
I just bought a jar of the white blue magic last week. I used it on my daughter’s hair when she was young and her hair was long healthy and gorgeous. So we’ve decided to try it again, since she is natural and has a lot of breakage in the back.
What I did for the breakage in the back is that hair is always on twists so even if I pull it up into a pony tail the twists show and people say on “that’s cute why’d you do it like that?” “Just something different” lol for my hair when it’s twisted and put away the breakage stops for some reason and it gives it a change to grow out it’s all grown out now so I don’t wear them anymore I think it had broken off because was I wearing it pulled up often and I’d sleep with it pulled up too to keep the style and it just stressed it and it broke off it really grew out my nape hair too that is all the same length now too
Sometimes i feel i have to fall back of that product for true. I dont think anything else has left my hair as soft amd manageable. When i think of it, pertroleum wud b the ultimate sealant because of its structure so moisture inside the hair isnt going anywhere, hence the softness just have to wash your regularly to remove the petroleum and put the moisture back in.
I just creased my Clients scalp with some
Blue is the absolutely best the name speaks for itself!
I hate this new organic stuff, my hair hates it. I apply this while my hair is wet, oil my scalp, and I don’t have to moisturize til my next wash day.
I stopped using Blue Magic back in the day when hot combs fell off. That grease used to pop and sizzle like bacon on my scalp. Never again! Lol
Still use faithfully and 4c hair is long and strong
My mom used Ultra Sheen on my hair and I keep a jar on standby, I don’t need it when I relax my hair but uses it for my boys, oh and that Sta-Sof-Fro
Girl I’m bringing some grease over today lmao
I’ve had a jar for like 2 yrs on a shelf. Not sure why I bought it in the 1st place..
Got off blue magic back in the day because of the “Don’t grease your scalp” trend… can you say hair breakage…im back on it now and hair is thick, strong and moisturized… #bluemagicgirlforlife
I use it and I use it on my daughter. It seems to be the only thing that keeps my daughter’s hair soft and moisturized.
Still use Blue magic and always will.. Can you say healthy hair????
I use to waste a fortune on hair products. That they said great the hair. I would hate the smell. And they never worked for me . Now in in my 50s lol . And they still don’t work.
I ain’t paying for expensive products anymore lol how is my grandmother her mother my momma my aunts all of them had long beautiful hair without spending 80 dollars seems like every month on products you don’t need it go back to the basics hair likes to be left alone wash comb it “grease” and put it up lol that’s all my meme ever did and had the prettiest hair
I guess so all these reviews online for high priced products they didn’t even pay for it was given to them to me it’s just nonsense you don’t need it since the beginning of time black women’s hair has always grown long and beautiful it didn’t just start with these high priced products
This and Royal Crown are still good.
I only use blue magic products in my daughter’s hair. She has eczema in her scalp and any other product would make her scratch herself bald. Since I have stuck to this brand her hair is longer healthier and stronger. I use the olive oil conditioner and the grease. Inexpensive and gets the job done
I have blue magic coconut oil now used on my grand daughter hair
Back in the day we didn’t eat alot of processed foods, mama cooked dinner at home, so that contribute to healthy hair.
Back on the blue magic. Just like the good ole days
I remember using this on my girls hair….
I have coconut.
Liv Creme Hairdressing and Conditioner ❤❤❤
Blue Magic
I’M STILL USING IT NOW. ✌✌✌✌✌✌
Only time I remember using that was when my hair was being pressed as a kid but you can use it anytime.
I still use it and been using it since elementary. My hair loves this stuff
Used the Blue and Green! Pressed and Curled. It’s the Best!!
Ultra Sheen gives you the silkiest look when used with a hot comb .
My hair is long still , my momma use to use Bluemagic n water that was it, I had the cutest ponytails , Lol they were a little tight , Use it and hair will be long and Strong !!!!, NATURAL hair needs This !!!!!
My hair is long still , my momma use to use Bluemagic n water that was it, I had the cutest ponytails , Lol they were a little tight , Use it and hair will be long and Strong !!!!, NATURAL hair needs This !!!!!
Still use it on my daughter and my hair. I love the way the organics smell.
Tyhisha Williams that blue magic
Yessssssss!!!!
I still use Blue Magic on my daughter’s hair.
Definitely good products for those that don’t want to figure out less heavy and nontoxic products for their hair.
