1. Introduce yourself . . .
Hii! I’m Ron’Janiele (Ron-Juh-Nell) but I go by Nelly. I’m a 15-year old honor student, born in New Orleans, Louisiana. I currently live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana with my mother, stepdad, and siblings.
2. Are you relaxed, natural, texturized or texlaxed?
Natural
3. What’s your story, how did you get to where you are?
As a kid (I still am one, but a younger kid lol!) I never actually knew I had natural curly/kinky* hair. My dad (may he rest in peace) actually had a really large afro I loved to play in as a child!
Honestly, most girls’ mothers kept their hair braided and in pretty, intricate styles; oh no honey*! Not my mom! My mom has THREE daughters and still cannot do hair to save her life! I always went to school with the only thing she knew how to do — seven strategic plaits.
After being located to Georgia after Katrina, my hair was still natural at the tender age of 5. After moving back to New Orleans in 2007, was when I got my first relaxer. I never asked or begged for it, it was kind of just a thing. With relaxers, my hair was still always really thick, but short.
After that, I always, always, always had braids. I just got relaxers whenever really, I wasn’t very religious about getting them. I got one sew in during my last year of middle school, and I wore it for a really long time (not, growing mold long or anything). My bestfriend begged me to take it out! So finally, come November I took it out, and just wore my hair in a kinda bun thing.
I got another relaxer for our winter dance in December 2013, and then my last one later in January of 2014. Originally, I made a bet with my mother that I wouldn’t get a another relaxer until my birthday, come March, my friend (who begged me to remove the sew in) convinced me to stay natural (she’s also natural, shes growing locs!)
While transitioning, I just wore my failed attempt at a bun, and box braids. Here I am now, 1 year and 7 months post with a bunch of kinky* hair!
4. What is your typical weekly regimen?
I usually wash my hair every two weeks or so, using Suave Naturals and maybe I’ll do an acv rinse. Then I’ll deep condition with a honey*, mayo and conditioner mix. Afterwards I dry my hair with a t-shirt and put it into four sections and do the LCO method. Nothing crazy.
5. Are you happy with your progress so far?
I’m very happy with my progress! It always seems to shock people when I say I’ve only been natural a year.
6. What’s your signature style?
My puff (with a twist in the front)! I wear a puff or multiple puffs all the time! Every now and then I do two halo twist to give my ends some relief.
7. How do you ensure that your ends are protected from the elements and your hands
Halo twist! They keep me from touching my hair because I will admit I have HIHS really bad! Also since I wear puffs alot, my ends are exposed, so the halo twist allows me to tuck them away for a little break.
8. Do you have a goal length or are you more concerned about the health of your hair?
Probably health. Even when I was relaxed (Kinda, but 9/10 times if you saw me I had braids with crazy new growth), I never straightened my hair or anything, since I was a tomboy and all I did was run and sweat. It was just on top of my head. Still being natural, I haven’t had my hair straightened since maybe 4th or 3rd grade.
9. Is there anything that you hair hates?
I’m heavy handed! I’m working on it though, I tend to cause buildup by putting on too much product and my hair hates it! It gets really itchy. Also, coconut oil* is a no no, it just makes my hair feel funny.
10. Do you have any favorite hair products?
EcoStyler* Olive Oil* Gel! Y’all my puffs be laid when I really wanna look cute! I also love Shea Butter* Miracle’s Bouncy Curls Pudding! It gives amazing definition and it’s pretty cheap.
11. Where can we find you online?
I only have tumblr:
