Now that it’s officially Spring, being from the South, some days it really feels like summer, and humidity is in full effect. Unless you plan on being in witness protection and stuck inside all Spring and Summer, you may want to use these tips to make sure that when you do step out, your hair doesn’t immediately turn into a frizz ball!
1. Embrace Your Natural Curl Pattern
I’ve learned a long time ago that my hair has a life of its own. The best way to fight humidity, as crazy as it may sound, is to not fight it.
We all know I love my wash-n-gos, so that’s typically what I do most mornings in the spring and summer. To get a little more control over the frizz, I may diffuse my hair or let it air dry 80-90% of the way before stepping out for the day.
2. Keep It Curly
As a natural, wearing straight hair styles typically don’t last very long. Add in humidity, and your straight hair might not even last the drive home from the salon.
So, I tend to stick to braid outs or twist outs. Those styles are easier to control because they are already close to my curly pattern, so when the frizz does come, it just blends in and gets bigger and fuller, which I love.
3. Protective Style
The summer is a good time to try box braids, twists, or even a wig* if you so choose. With those styles, you won’t even have to worry about combatting frizz, and they are low maintenance.
4. Smoothing or Anti-Frizz Product
You can add these products to your hair when styling for extra assistance. The products will coat your hair and provide a barrier in order to reduce frizz and shrinkage, which are effects of humidity. My favorite anti-frizz product right now is Ouidad’s, Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel.
5. Scarfs/Wraps/Turbans
If you just want to avoid seeing your hair altogether, then this tip is for you. I love a cute turban, scarf or wrap because it can be casual or dressy, depending on your mood.
How do you combat humidity on Summer days?
I live in the humid South. I don’t fight humidity because for me it’s pointless. I just let my hair do what it do
I don’t bother to fight it. I live in Barbados … it’s humid 24/7.
I have fine 4ab hair & I use KinkyCurly system if I want wash & goes or wear an Afro using Qhemet Biologics Castor Amla serum over Burdock Root Buttercream , or Shea Moisture Hydration complex & PinkOil as leave ins & seal with good old BlueMagic Super Sure Gro. I also have used BlueMagic over the Qhemet Burdock Root Creme. I avoid glycerin like the plague it causes FRIZZ!
