Taking proper care of our hair, and sticking to our hair regimens is important. We faithfully look for ways to retain hair length, moisture, and even promote growth. There are plenty of products out there that claim to promote hair growth, but let us face it products will not always be the cause of your hair growth; what you eat is also a huge factor. Those products you spend a lot of money on won’t get you the healthy hair you need.
So let’s go through a list of things you should try to put into your diet to be on your way to healthy hair and growth:
1. Protein
Hair is made up of 87 percent protein. We often do protein treatments to help strengthen our hair shaft and to avoid damage. It is best ingest protein through the mouth as well. To name a few foods:
- Beans (pinto, black, garbanzo, kidney)
- Tuna
- Snapper
- Cod
- Shrimp
- Tofu
- Cauliflower
- Collard greens, Mustard greens
- Spinach
- Eggs
- Chicken
- Turkey
- Mozzarella Cheese
2. Vitamin A
Vitamin A* is healthy for the scalp. It is also good for eye health but known to promote healthy hair. Vitamin A* helps the scalp to stay coated with its natural hair oils*. This prevents the hair and scalp from drying out. This vitamin is found in the following:
- Carrots
- Peaches
- Spinach
- Cod Liver Oil
- Cow Milk
- Tomatoes
- Guava
- Papaya
- Cayenne Pepper
- Kale
- Shellfish
- Sweet Potatoes
3. Vitamin B
Now, this vitamin is necessary also. Without it, your hair can be overly oily. Another name for this is Pathothenic Acid or Vitamin B5. This can also prevent early aging and greying. It helps strengthen hair follicles and rids the scalp of dead skin. Here are some foods that contain Vitamin B:
- Walnuts
- Brown Rice
- Sunflower Seeds
- Cheese
- Yogurt
- Fish
- Dried Apricots
- Potatoes
- Asparagus
- Whole grain cereal
- Garlic
- Wheat Germ
- Avocado
- Celery
- Eggs
Just be sure to stock up on your vitamins* – all types of vitamins*, including Vitamin E*, C, and K. All of these add to healthy hair.
4. Biotin
We all have heard about this. Commonly, it is taken in a soft gel pill form, but there are foods with Biotin*:
- Oats
- Bulgur
- Brown Rice
- Green Peas
- Mushrooms
- Turkey
- Tuna
- Peanut Butter
- Liver

I know every one of these tips and foods but don’t follow them *sigh* My diet is definitely the hardest aspect of healthy living for me. I’ve considered taking vitamins but you can’t cross out a horrible diet with pills. I need to get on the ball.
