What To Do If You Have High Porosity Hair
If you fall in the category of high porosity hair, the best thing for you to use would be moisture based products and anti humectants when its humid. We cant say this enough, but protein is your BFF whether you like it or not. While protein doesn’t fix the problem permanently, nothing can, it does help to temporarily fill in holes to allow your hair to hold on to moisture longer.
Your order of care should be protein first and then some sort of moisture balancing treatment after. This could be as simple as doing a protein based prepoo and following up with a moisture based conditioner after the shampoo.
Your other BFF will be sealing with heavy creams or butters*, try to seal your hair as often as you can with something that has a little umph to it. Castor oil* for instance is considered a an oil with a little umph!
Another cool trick to help your cuticle layers lay down is to always end your wash process with a cool water or during your wash use something acidic such as diluted apple cider vinegar that will help seal the cuticle of your hair.
It would also be wise to use thick oil containing conditioners more often than light ones. Conditioners specifically made to correct porosity issues may also benefit you.
What To Do If You Have Low Porosity Hair
If you have low porosity hair then heat is your BFF. But not just any kind of heat, moderate steam containing heat during your deep conditioning* treatments to help lift the cuticles and let moisture in or heat from a bonnet dryer or heat cap.
I would go as far as to say that deep conditioning* without heat will be almost useless for you.
Use products rich in moisture, emollients and humectants. The goal is to attract, get and keep as much moisture as possible in your strands. It would be wise if you considered investing in a hair steamer or at the very least a heat cap to help with deep conditioning.
Where on the porosity scale does your hair fall?

Hello, I’m new to the world of hair care, decided to start my hair journey. I did the porosity test but I’m confused as my strands sank then floated a minute after does this mean I’m high porosity or low?

Due to the fact that the majority of African-Americans have multi DNA we have so many different types of hair in our heads we go from non poros to high porosity on one head of hair so the treatment can be tricky. The best thing that I have learned the more natural and milder the ingredients in the product the better. To harsh is too bad. I have been natural for over 45 years and love it! At sixty will a full head of hair no bald spots!
