Sasheer Zamata is the newest cast member of the hit show Saturday Night Live, and she is special, why? Well first of all she is talented and educated, having worked with the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York Since graduating with a degree in Drama from the University of Virginia in 2009.
She also has some work on YouTube that will have you dying with laughter and finally she is also special because she is the first African American Female cast member to be hired on ‘SNL’ since Maya Rudolph left in 2007.
Kerry Washington led with the twitter reactions saying:
Congrats to #SasheerZamata @thesheertruth on joining @nbcsnl ‘Saturday Night Live’ #SNL !!!!! Have FUN
Sasheer makes her debut on Saturday night live on January 18th when super star Drake hosts and we will all be watching in support of her first day on the job.
SNL has received a lot of flack lately for not having a black actress on the show; they usually resorted to having Kenan Thompson cross dress to fill what was clearly a void in some of their most famous episodes.
CNN reported:
In October, “SNL” cast member Kenan Thompson told TV Guide the show had difficulty finding qualified black female comedians to hire. He insisted that the talent pool was limited because so many of the women were not seasoned enough for the job.
I am not sure I agree with Kenan, as a matter of fact I think that it was just a lack of urgency since he was so comfortable wearing a dress up until last year when he spoke to T.V Guide.
The black actress will tell you, it is very difficult for them to break the mold they have been placed in when trying to be cast in major shows and films. My opinion is that if SNL really looked they would have found a great girl to fill the role years ago just like they have done now with Sasheer.
Black actresses are everywhere, they are on Broadway, they are on YouTube, they are in small films and they are very talented. But I digress. We want to congratulate Sasheer for getting there, the sky is the limit and I am sure SNL is only one chapter in her book.
PS: if you are an artist, actress or whatever it is that you are passionate about keep working hard, put your business out there for the world to see because you never know who is looking. Be shameless about your craft!
