I did not catch the original story, but as usual Oprah does a great job of getting us all up to speed. This young lady took a bad perm and made it into a well established organisation and she is still going. If ever you need inspiration, or a reason to push yourself this is it right here. Jasmine suffered from what many of us did back in the day and that is a bad perm that caused her to loose all the hair on the top of her head.
She took that experience and turned it into a good one, when she decided at just 11 years old that she was going to create her own natural products for her hair, and she called her company Eden Body Works. At that time there was a real market for natural hair products and to this day the market is not yet saturated as more of us decide to leave chemicals behind and move forward with more products dedicated to natural hair.
Natural hair products are huge nowadays and even though Jasmine was 11 years old I am sure she understood the basic principal of business, if it isn’t there, then why not just make it. Today her brand is well known and most of us have a jar of something from her line in our cabinets.
We wanted to share this episode because of course it is directly related to our business but there are women out there trying to do the exact same thing Jasmine did and may feel a bit discouraged. Everyone knows having your own business is hard, I don’t care what industry you are in, but if you work for yourself you will work harder than you ever did in your life.
I think what I appreciate the most about Jasmine is her desire to continuously improve herself and try different things. She started Eden Body Works in her basement in Jersey 10 years ago and in addition to that she works at Microsoft as a software engineer, she travels, attend conferences, and is persuing her Masters in Human Centered Design and Engineering.
Girls if you have free time, you aren’t working hard enough, check out her video below:
