My natural hair and I have had a love-hate relationship these past few months. At one point I was over it because it just wasn’t doing what I wanted it to do style wise. I had to get my motivation back and once I did I decided to switch up some products.
For a while I was using a specific gel that I concocted to work for my hair. It worked wonders on all of my styles for a while and then I noticed only my wash n’ gos and flat twist outs were okay but my regular twist outs just kind of went whomp.
I grew extremely frustrated because as a natural, a 2 strand twist out is the easiest style to do and had been my go to for the longest.
I just couldn’t hold the definition. Day one it would be okay and then the following days it was just like nope!
Was my hair changing? Were my strands damaged somehow?
All these questions were going through my head and then for no particular reason, I decided to revisit an old holy grail gel, Eco Styler* w/ Argan oil*.
I kept my regimen exactly the same, changing nothing but the gel. My next twist out was ahmayzing! So much definition in my curls and my day 5 hair still looked great. I noticed it actually looks better as the week goes on.
At this point I realized my hair doesn’t hate me! It has just most likely grew an intolerance or aversion for the product I was using.
It is very true that our hair can change over time. Products that worked great at one point may not continue to do so as time goes on. Also vice versa, those products you hated when you started your journey could very much be what your hair is missing currently.
I think it’s important to not get so stuck with using a set product. Listen to your hair. Experiment and switch things up every once and a while. You never know, you just might find out what your hair has been missing!
