Go natural. Length check. Try a new style. Length check. 1 year naturalversary. Length check.
Let’s face it, us naturals have an obsession with the growth of our hair. Growing hair means healthy hair, and so we try many different extremes and desperate measures to ensure that we are getting the optimal growth results. From vitamins*, to hair challenges, to products guaranteeing added inches in months. We are obsessed!
I say we because I too have a hair goal in mind to grow my hair. One of the major reasons I decided to go natural was to grow out my short pixie I had been rocking for about 6 years. Every time I tried to grow it out while I was relaxed I hit an awkward stage and would quickly reach for the scissors again.
Here I am 2 years into my journey and my hair stretches to the top of my shoulders.
Going into 2016, one of my top hair goals was to ensure that I’m practicing a healthy hair care regimen so that I will grow long healthy hair. I don’t do length checks but at almost 2 months into the year I have realized that my hair has grown, a lot!
How you ask? Easy. I’ve stopped obsessing over growing it!
That’s it. Just going with the flow. Staying on top of my regular hair care maintenance, getting regular trims and not concentrating so much on how much it has grown.
One of my close friends texted me the other week asking me to go look back at one of my original twist out YouTube videos that I did last year and look at how much my hair has grown. When I did my first reaction was, “Wow”. My hair really has grown a lot and I barely even noticed. Well of course I did take note as the gap between my uncolored roots and my blonde ends began to grow wider and wider as the months go on but I didn’t focus on it so much.
So I say all of this to point out that sometimes the best hair growth challenge is to stop obsessing over growing our hair out. Make sure you’re taking care of your hair and the results will show!
