For about 6 months I was subscribed to the natural hair subscription service, CurlBox. I got so many goodies over that period and some products I haven’t even gotten a chance to use.
I’ve set up a nice small bookcase in my closet where I have organized all of my hair products, and when going through them recently I came across a can of hair spray I received in a past box.
First question that came to mind was “what am I even going to do with this?” When most think of natural hair and hair spray they probably cringe. Dry hair, loss of shine, hardness, and the list goes on.
I love experimenting and decided to put it to the test. Can natural hair and hair spray really work?
Here’s what I learned:
1. It only works well with certain styles.
I tried three styles which I followed up with hair spray: twist out, wash n go, and a flexi rod* set. For me, the twist out was a no go because I was unable to retwist my hair at night and receive good results the next day. The curls were flattened and hard. On the contrary, hair spray worked well with a wash n’ go and a flexi rod* set where I do not have to reset my hair each night. I simply applied a little argan oil* and fluffed in the morning as was ready to go.
2. It’s great for holding up a style to humidity.
I have to admit this was my biggest motivation for use of hair spray. When stepping out on a rainy day could my twist out hold up to the humidity and moisture in the air? In fact, it does. I had reduced frizz and my curls stayed in tact.
3. Style retention will be cut down by half.
If you use hair spray on natural hair I can guarantee you that your style will not hold up for the entire week. By day 3 of my rod set my hair was dull and starting to look flat. Typically if I don’t use hair spray I could get it to last about 6 days.
So there you have it. My experimentation with natural hair and hair spray for myself. I’d personally won’t use it again unless I had a big event like a wedding or festival I was going to where I was concerned about my hair holding up do things out of my control, like the weather.
What’s your experience with natural hair and hair spray?
