3. Natural hair isn’t versatile
During my transition-and even after cutting off my relaxed ends-, I wore my hair in a bun 24/7. Working with a completely new curl pattern and having a limited education on natural hair restricted me when it came to styling.
Initially, I thought that being in the dark about natural hair versatility was something that only natural-hair-newcomers went through but it turns out that a lot of people had this idea about natural hair-even if they weren’t on a journey.
This belief alone has led to conversations about why natural hair isn’t appropriate for the work place and other formal settings. One woman even went as far as to ban women with natural hair from her wedding because she didn’t like afros. Ridiculous isn’t it?
Although this idea was-and somehow still is-widely believed, it is completely false. Simply put, Black women’s natural hair is no different than any other type of hair. We can curl it, straighten it, braid it, dye it, and everything else.
4. Relaxed women should stay away from water
Wetting your hair after getting it relaxed and styled is obviously going to affect how long the style lasts. So we cut down wash days and dodge rain drops like bullets, but is it really necessary? No, not exactly.
If you want healthy relaxed hair, it means you are going to have to keep your hair properly moisturized and clear of scalp buildup. This means using water-based moisturizers and washing your hair regularly. In the long run, water will actually benefit your hair.
And about swimming and rainy weather? The real thing you should be worried about is salt and chlorine negatively affecting your mane. Lucky for us, there is a bunch of information out there to help us preserve our hairstyles and keep them salt/chlorine free in the process.
5. Natural hair is not “For Everyone”
Let me start off by saying this: Don’t ever let anyone tell you that what grows out of your head naturally is not for you. With all of these negative comments about natural hair, the most commonly said one is-of course-the most illogical.
Many times, this statement is used as a “nicer” way to call kinks, curls, and coils ugly. Other times, it means that not everyone is cut out for a natural hair journey because of the dedication (and sometimes, money!) it takes to get through it successfully.
Admittedly, the latter of the two is understandable and can be true in certain circumstances. However, using the phrase to discourage women from going natural can very well be problematic; and we are all aware that negative comments and hair discrimination towards naturals is a thing.
Natural hair is not for the people who aren’t ready to dedicate themselves to all of the responsibilities that come with maintaining healthy hair. However, claiming natural hair is not for everyone because you don’t like the way it grows out of their head is asinine.
False….some women wear wigs or weaves to give their own hair a break,or to change up a hair style
Word, Facts indeed!!!!
Or because u have 3 natural teen daughters and never have time for ur own hair
Yep, I’m terrible at styling!
But I have tons of hair.
And I have time constraints.
Wigs flip on and off.
It did say weaves and wigs are sometimes used for protection and/or to try a new style without ever damaging your own hair.
Relaxed hair causes Fibroids and non cancerous rumors. It is the main reason so many black women have fibroids,a lot of women don’t even know they have the them. Relaxers are also the cause of a hysterectomy
And terrible menstrual cycles, as well as elevated hormone levels.
Wow i didnt know that but, a couple of years ago i decided to stop perming my hair and now they say i have small fibroids.
They have found ways to kill us off! So SAD. Finally this generation is waking UP. Being natural is the thing! And THEY don’t like IT. Losing money. Less Black’s are cancerous. Going back to our herbs and educating our community! Like this page.?
I go to the gyn,and they say from the time i was diagnosed, that they have not grown that much, plus i am watching my diet.
Oh yeah, and i am a firm believer in the power of prayer.
That’s not true. No relaxer and I still have them…
It’s very true, it’s not up for a debate either. Those are facts.
Michelle perms are the number one cause leading for fibroids cancer. In 2012 Boston University study that says Black women who use hair relaxers are at slightly higher risk of developing uterine fibroids.
Fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus, causing heavy bleeding and painful periods, and they are a leading cause of hysterectomies.
Welcome!!!we as women must pray for each other, and lift one another up,so important. The truth is the truth. We must expose it for what it is.
Rhonda I agree. Truth is truth especially when you’ve done your research.
I used to get relaxers like no tommorow…Ive been issued a clean bill of health and am currently pregnant…maybe all that skipped me ?
Not just relaxers but antiperspirants. They can cause cysts under the arms, which is what happens to me, and when women get bteast cancer it’s usually located in the upper quadrant near the under arm. I had to stop using antiperspirants because I would get painful cysts under my arms so I use deodorants and just put up with the sweating, but I have no more under arm cysts.
This isn’t true tho. How come white people have fibroid tumors?
It could be linked to meats and dairy. I read stories about that. I also know a women who stopped eating meat and her tumors shrunken
I’m loving my Natural Mane & Thats all He Prefers
My natural hair is bra length and I love it. I wear weaves because I don’t have the time required to dedicate to it every morning while preparing for work.
Women need not define reason why they wear wigs or weaves. Its a form of versatile beauty and the opportunity change her style when she pleases.
I appreciates all the likes to my comment. Ladies never be afraid to express your sexiness.
Could not have said it better or any plainer that. Hope they all see it.
My natural hair is shoulder length and to thick so I prefer to wear my weaves because being natural sometimes is a pain lol.
It is a workout getting it together, but I’m loving the healthy look and thickness my hair is since I stopped relaxing
Yes it is right now I’m giving my hair a break from braids and weaves and I discovered some many ways to style my natural hair. I been natural for 8yrs.
Actually, that study showing that was debunked. The causes of fibroids in black women are sporadic and genetically driven not by relaxers. And if you look at the proposed physiology it doesn’t make sense.
I agree. It does not make any sense to me either. As I said before other races have fibroid tumors and they don’t get relaxers. My ma had them b4 she used chemicals in her hair
Thats not true…I have alot of hair….I wear weave because I want to…and I don’t have time to do my hair every morning
Will however thin your hair eventually. Why do you wear it when your hair is so nice ?
I don’t care for weaves, I never liked them. But I will rock a wig, I haven’t worn a wig in awhile now.
I wear weave because I avoid chemicals… I have a lot of hair for your information and I’m a latina. Thank You…
I wear it as a protective style….from heat damage… I have to be at work around 7am who has time to style hair not me….a brush and out the door
I’m glad somebody finally cleared some of those myths up! I relax man my hair because that’s the way I like it, I have always loved my hair “bone straight” it’s not about “self hatred” it’s a choice and my choice alone!
I wear weaves and wigs simply because I like them
