DIY’ers are not trained to color and cut. So you’ll never achieve what a professional stylist can give you in a reasonable time frame. Also the sisterhood and bonding is very different in the salon than it is on the web. The networking and referral system is beneficial. Especially when wisdom is handed down. Also, dusting is not a cut!
What are your favorite products for your own natural hair, and tell us about that gorgeous color you are sporting on the cover of your book Textured Tresses?
Some of my favorite products are Carol’s Daughter Monoi Repair Collection, Black Vanilla Collection and Chocolat Smoothing Collection. My new favorite products are Jane Carter Solutions Hydrate and Restore Collection. Biolage exquisite Oil Collection also is a great shampoo, condition and oil treatment.
My color is a chocolate brown with red/copper* highlights. It is pre-lightened to achieve the red/copper* highlights. You must condition the hair weekly with a repair oil cocktail to maintain the healthiness and integrity of the hair.
We know you big chopped in 1987, how did you feel when you first cut your hair?
It was best feeling in the world. I had no hesitation or insecurities about it. I loved it and I love my naturally curly hair. My scalp was free of the irritation of the relaxer and healthy once I did the big chop.
What inspired you to write your book Textured Tresses?
I always wanted to write a Beauty book. At the time I was the hair editor at Honey* Magazine. So that was a big inspiration to move forward with my project.
What are some of the projects you have coming up in the future?
I just finished technically directing, writing and editing 10 dvd’s for the Milady Natural Hair Care and Braiding book for students who will use these to train to become stylists. Also I have 3 professional cutting videos for cosmetologists on the Milady education network due to be released this fall.
And look out for a new book, hair products and the expansion CurlyTexturedBAR at SimpleeBEAUTIFUL in the next Year
Thank you so much and God Bless You!
