3. Gray hair or graying hair needs more moisture
It’s worth noting that graying hair may not act like the rest of your hair. If you already have grays then you know they do not always play well with others.
They can be wiry and dry and there are reasons for this that, I discuss in Do Gray Curls Have Their Own Hair Type?
There is always the option of coloring your gray and there are some very non-harsh products to use or using henna, but the main tip is to keep your hair moisturized.
4. There are accessories that are as conservative or as funky as you want to be
I know that some older women may feel they want a more conservative style for work, or just for themselves.
Many women who choose to do the big chop hate the short hair but you can dress it up and look great. When I was sporting a TWA, I wore scarves as a headband* and got plenty of compliments.
Do not feel that you have to stick with the norm. Think outside the box to find something that compliments your hair and work with it. Flowers, scarves, color, etc. Do what makes you feel beautiful.
5. Relaxed hair is not natural hair
I am not trying to be funny but when I first went natural, I was STILL using my relaxed hair products. We may have been working with relaxed hair longer than some of our younger counterparts (I was relaxed for 22 years) so that means you have to, once again, think outside the box.
You will need to do some homework on products to see what to try and no matter what you initially choose there will be trial and error. Now there are so many products for natural hair so read labels, try samples, do it up!
6. Natural hair can help thinning hair but you need proper hair maintenance
I cannot stress this enough. Many older women are dealing with thinning hair. Nearly 40% of women experience some degree of hair loss by age 60, mostly around the crown leaving hair thin and lackluster this is just a reality and while many older women embrace natural hair to combat this they must realize that taking care of their hair and body is necessary.
Eating right, exercising, drinking water and proper hair maintenance will help with hair thinning to a degree but just going natural alone will not do it.
Many of these tips are great for younger women too so feel free to gain some knowledge as you make your transition into natural hair.
As I said before, it is more than just changing hair products and way more than just letting your relaxer grow out. It is a big decision that is so worth it so making it as easy as possible will only ensure your success.

Beautiful hair !!
First let me say a heartfelt “Thank You” for doing an article on older women going natural. I’m 53 and this past July I stopped relaxing me hair! Scare to death I have been relaxing my hair since I was 14, 40 YEARS of damage. I began noticing my hair thinning at the temple and relaxing made it worst. I am lucky, my daughter has been natural for 8 years and is tickled pink that I’ve decided to put down the “cream”. The BIG CUT is schedule for the end of January. I’m very excited!! I used to wear a short sleek haircut when I was relaxed. Any suggestions? I want my short hair to be more than a TWA And is there any bloggers for natural hair and older women. I excited about this journey and advice, help or suggestions would be most helpful.
I’ve had grey since I was about 30 yrs old, I’m now 60 yrs and in transitioning to natural my dilemna is how do I keep my grey hair
clean and grey, without the use of products containing dyes?
Beautiful stuff
