Evening Workouts
This brings us to working out in the evening. Heading to the gym after work is actually what I prefer because I typically like to do yoga in the mornings.
I also find that this practice works best for my hair. I select my workout days for those times when I know I don’t have any plans for the rest of the day.
I will go on and complete my run with whatever style I’ve worn for the day, usually my twist out. Yes, my head will sweat and my hair will become damp but this is okay.
After my workout I head on home and will re-twist my hair using the moisture plus a little gel.
The next day I’m good to go and my hair still looks great!
Maintenance
Moving on to up keeping your natural hair while working out.
Because when you workout you are sweating, and it contains lactic acid and salt which can be harmful to your hair, you want to ensure you are cleansing you hair regularly to keep it fresh.
I know quite a few naturals who only wash their hair like once a month. I don’t see how they do it!
For me, on a typical week I will wash my hair twice. I usually have a Sunday and Wednesday routine which may vary due to travel or other activities I may have going on. I will do my complete wash day on Sunday’s where I will do a treatment (pre-poo, hot oil or protein), then clarify with a sulfate-free shampoo followed by a deep condition then style to my liking.
On Wednesdays I only co-wash and style. This mid-week small wash day is just to freshen up during the week after two workout days.
There are also other options if you are someone who is looking for an easy fix to not have to manipulate your hair as much. You can do protective styling such as box braids.
Or you can twist up your natural hair into a cute style and rock it all week. Check out the video below for an example. By doing a protective style your hair can still look sleek without having to worry about sweating it out.
I would still recommend washing it at least once a week to get rid of the build up so that you can continue to have healthy glowing hair!
Does working out affect your hair? What are some of the things you do to maintain your natural hair while staying fit?
Great info! I’m sharing it with my followers.
These are great suggestions.
I only recently cut off my relaxed hair andand have only been pacticng yoga, which in the tropics can seem like aa cardio workout, no hot studio needed. Although i don’t usually sweat in my head, I will consider these as my hair grows. And I definitely will share with others.
