Introduce yourself . . .
Hi, I’m Angela!
Are you relaxed, natural, texturized or texlaxed?
Over the course of about a year I transitioned from permed to completely natural.
What’s your story, how did you get to where you are?
Initially, my hair was overdue to retouch and between trying to save money and actually getting the appointment, I decided to go natural.
I began by wearing my hair in a French roll so I wouldn’t have to deal with new growth too much. Believe it or not, while wearing that French roll I started to notice my natural hair was pretty wavy and maybe– just maybe I could let it grow out.
After doing research, watching videos and getting inspired, I started my journey. That was the around November of 2011. I felt so empowered by the results that I tried my hand at making my own products.
First it was a way to offset costs, but I got pretty good at it and have never turned back. I now make my owner gentle cleanser, conditioner, curling gel/pudding, moisturizer and detangler. It takes more time, effort and planning, but it’s worth it in the end. It allows me to customize formulas to meet my hair current needs.
Fun! Fun! Fun! Natural Hair Rocks!
What is your typical weekly regimen?
My regimen is pretty simple.
STEP 1: I rinse my hair thoroughly with warm water for a few minutes. Since my hair is pretty thick, I try to make sure my hair is completely wet and free of all products.
STEP 2: I cleanse my hair with a homemade combination of yucca and burdock root, aloe vera and essential oils*. Rinse thoroughly.
STEP 3: I condition my hair with a homemade combination of BTMS (Conditioning Emulsifier), aloe vera and essential oils*. While rinsing thoroughly, detangle with fingers gently.
STEP 4: Use denman brush* to detangle further.
STEP 5: Separate and twist into 4 to 6 sections.
STEP 6: Repeat conditioning steps. Rinse lightly. Squeeze out extra water. Cover with shower cap* until I complete shower.
STEP 7: Apply jojoba oil* to each section and twist out of the way.
STEP 8: Apply gel/pudding to each section.
STEP 9: Gentle finger detangle and follow with Denman.
STEP 10: Style.
Are you happy with your progress so far?
Yes! I’m thrilled about my progress.
What’s your signature style?
My signature style is puffy curly side bang and a modified French roll.
How do you ensure that your ends are protected from the elements and your hands?
I allow myself to play in my hair when the mood strikes me, but I almost always end up wearing 85% of my hair up in a French roll, messy bun or just a big braid tucked underneath in the back.
Do you have a goal length or are you more concerned about the health of your hair?
Since becoming responsible for my own hair — about age 16 — this natural hair journey has my hair at it’s healthiest and longest. My five year goal is mid-back length. Currently, the back of my hair is almost arm-pit length. Pretty good for almost two years.
Is there anything that you hair hates?
When my hair was relaxed, I didn’t understand how important ingredients were and what long-term affects they had on hair and body.
I’ve learned a lot since going natural about ingredients. Making my own products, I don’t worry about harmful ingredients but I’ve learned that too much protein will cause excessive shedding.
Do you have any favorite hair products?
I love jojoba oil*, flax seeds and honey*. Organic Aloe vera is one product I can use to cleanse, conditioning and style. It’s great!
