Going back to relaxers is out of the question for many naturals. I mean, please! The creamy crack is a thing of the past, there’s no need to second guess that decision.
Weeeeell that’s just until your hair decides to be very uncooperative and you have tried everything 3 times to get it to behave. Then the unthinkable happens, your wheels start turning and now you may be considering a relaxer as your only option.
You used to be so excited about your natural hair and tell others about how they would love having natural hair too but truthfully, you are starting to lose a little confidence.
All the bad hair days, uncertainty about what products to use, excessive hair shedding, single-strand knots, and getting bored/irritated with your natural hair can and will put a dent in your hair journey, trust me we all go through it.
What you need is a plan of action starting with acknowledgement of the things that typically trigger your loss of confidence.
What’s making you lose confidence?
It may not necessarily be bad hair days or uncertainty on what products to use, but it could be negative feedback from family and friends.
They are the main people in your life you would think would be in your corner, but sometimes its the ones closest to us who seem to always have something negative to say.
You might also lose confidence in your natural hair because you are in the awkward length stage or believe that your hair is not growing and never will grow.
Maybe you just got burnt out on how to care for your own hair and are tired of trying product after product without achieving the results you desire. You are just plain tired of natural hair.
Once you have identified your triggers you can try these 6 tips to get you excited about your natural hair journey again.
1. Remember why you started
Go back to the beginning of your hair diary and read a few entries to inspire you to get yourself back on track. Re-discover why you went natural in the first place.
Did you lose your hair to chemicals? Is being natural better for your health and lifestyle? Did going natural change your perspective about hair and beauty? Do you love big afros?
Read your hair goals and positive feedback you gave yourself at the beginning of your natural hair journey. Help yourself be your own inspiration by learning and believing in your natural hair again.
2. Look at past photos
Check out your old pictures, you know, the ones before you went natural or at the beginning stages of being natural. You may be surprised to realize how healthy and thick your hair actually is now as compared to then which could truly shock you.
If you do not have any pictures, start taking photos of your hair journey and get very creative about how you take them. Your pictures can inspire someone else which in turn can get you very energized about your own hair.
Additionally you can compare your pictures every few months and see that your hair is getting better as you continue to care for it. Looking at your photos will not only motivate you, but this will revive the spark of excitement you initially felt for natural hair.
I can totally relate to #6! I’m at an awkward stage , that’s why I had my hair braided !
This helps. To be honest this natural thing is getting old, but thanks goodness I’ve seen this article, don’t ever wanna go back to the scalp burns, shedding, same length, thin hair, boring straight hair relaxer stage again.
I can relate whenever I get sick of my natural hair it’s time for braids, twist or sew ins after those I usually miss my hair
I’m in the awkward stage length and I’m getting two strand twists this Wednesday I’m only going to have a little bit of extensions added since my hair hates weave and I hate weave and extensions . I think I’m doing this for four years then I’ll take it down and just braid my own hair with no added extensions and some days take it out in a braid out .

My hair makes me smile so much! I cut off waist length perm hair. Thought I made the worse decision but now Im in love with it.
Perfect timing on this article because 3 years in I’m getting tired of all of the work to get a good looking style and miss the old days of just putting my hair in a bun or ponytail when I didn’t feel like dealing with it, cant do that with my shoulder length 4C because it frizzes so with the tiniest amount of sweat or humidity.
