Eat healthy
Continue to eat healthy during the fall and winter season so that your growth rate stays consistent and speeds up even. Growth is based on what you put inside of you so eat your veggies, take your vitamins* and still get that water in.
Watch the clothing
Wool and other material that we like to wear in colder months cause friction to strands so where your hair up if you plan to put on something that will fray or snag your ends.
If you are wearing a thick sweater or jacket, a style that keeps your hair off your shoulders tend to look better anyway so don’t be afraid to do that ninja bun you have been eyeing on our blog.
About Heat styling
We want to address this separately because when you are heat styling you have to be very cautious not to cause damage to the strands impeding your retention goals. It is very important that you follow the tips above especially if you plan to flat iron*.
When you hydrate your hair with deep conditioning*, use quality products, if you need protein make sure that it is listed high on the ingredient list on the product label. By the way, if you are heat styling, you will need protein so chances are you need to pick up a protein based product that is of great quality.
If you deep condition with cheap conditioner like most of us do, enhance that thing with some oils*, humenctants, mayo, eggs anything that will give your hair life.
Once you have given your hair enough to maintain itself then you can flat iron* your hair allowing it to shine without using serums or a bunch of useless products. The less styling products you use the better your hair will look and feel.
Get a trim
If you are going to wear your hair straight, trim your ends if you haven’t already done so. Summer wash and goes can lead to knots and sometimes a little fuzziness on the ends. It is easy to ignore your ends when your hair is curly and shrunken, but you can’t hide the health of your ends when your hair is straight.
If your ends don’t straighten, get a trim, if they have knots, get a trim, if they have splits, get a trim, if you see gaps and unevenness get a trim, yes ladies now is the time to get a trim.
Use less heat
Confusing right? But when we say use less heat we mean skip the blow drying and opt for a roller set. Roller sets are not as harsh as blow dryers*, they help to stretch your hair, and you can be a style on its own without flat ironing.
If your goal is still bone straight hair, at least your hair will be stretched enough to do the job.
How do you plan to retain length this Fall and Winter?
Steen How says
Shea butter is the truth in the winter time! it protects my strands very much. And I’m thinking long term protective styles like crochet braids and box braids.
