- Dandruff - Little white flakes found on the scalp caused from buildup of shedding dead skin. Treatment - Dermatologist recommended shampoo or over the counter dandruff shampoo
- seborrheic dermatitis - Dandruff is considered a mild form of seborrheic dermatitis - In extreme cases you will notice not just flaking but extreme irritation with a lot of oil buildup on the scalp.
- Cradle Cap - Another form of seborrheic dermatitis common in babies in the first 6 months of life.Cradle cap does not hurt the child and usually clears up by the time he or she turns one. To treat - Gently remove the flakes with a comb and use a gentle shampoo to get rid of the flakes. Oils make it worse!
- Head lice - Lice are wingless insects about the size of a sesame seed. They feed on blood, and the females lay their eggs on the hair close to the scalp. Common in schools and can be very contagious - To treat parents can use over the counter lice kits and see a doctor to be sure about treatment.
- Ring Worm has nothing to do with worms. It is an infection that leaves round, scaly, red rashes and patches of hair loss on the scalp. - See a doctor for treatment.
- Folliculitis - Is sort of like having an ingrown hair is an inflammation or infection of the hair follicle, the sac that contains the root of the hair. It is usually caused by bacteria usually staphylococcus in the the hair follicles. The follicle gets irritated from shaving, makeup, or clothing and even a hot tub.
- Psoriasis - This is a skin condition that can be anywhere including the scalp. The body makes too many new skin cell and causes thick crusted scales that can feel itchy or sore. Treatment - Doctor prescribed steroids or creams, shampoos, or even medication.
- Lichen Planus - Look like large bumps on the scalp that can lead to hair loss. Doctors do not know what causes it but they believe it is an autoimmune disease that is caused from a number of things including stress or genetics. The main medication for this is a doctor prescribed steroid.
