Angolan supermodel Maria Borges was on everyone’s timeline last night because she made history frankly. She is the first black woman to rock her natural hair during the Victoria Secret Fashion Show.
23 year old Maria has been walking for the show for 3 years and every time she has had to wear a wig* or weave, this time she told Essence that she asked her agent if she could be allowed to rock her natural hair.
I told my agent I wanted to walk in the Victoria’s Secret show with my natural hair,” Borges told Essence. “I was nervous, but I had to do it. When they said ‘yes’ I didn’t expect it, but I was so happy! “
It is crazy because we are kinda making a big deal about something that for many models is considered normal. Of course everyone might wear extensions* every now and again but the Victoria Secret brand has never had a natural afro on their runway, ever.
This means that one, natural hair is becoming more main stream and normal and it also means that brands are seeing the beauty of natural hair as beneficial to their success.
According to Yahoo statistics out of the 44 models only 8 of them were black and only one model out of the 8 wore her natural hair.
Maria Borges rocked her fro proudly and it is nothing short of spectacular, something we will never forget. Natural hair is making moves literally and we hope with all the buzz Victoria Secret will be a bit more open minded about black women wearing their own hair on the run way.
We do not know about you but we cannot wait to see the show on Tuesday December 8th, we have a feelings ratings will be high and it might just be because one girl was allowed to do something that should have been the norm in the first place.

She is the most gorgeous. NATURAL. Our women do not require extensions. Requiring them feeds into the narrative that there is something wrong with your hair. The only thing wrong is you are not sharing your traditions and culture with your kids and you have given in.
Saying you are strong and showing you are strong are two different things.
I love seeing our women in natural hair and natural braids and natural cornrows, etc…. NO EXTENSIONS.
