Last week we tackled mini braids, we discussed the pros and the cons and how beneficial they are for women who want to give their hair a break for awhile.
If you have not read that post then click here. This week we want to focus on mini twists which like mini braids are also an awesome protective style. There is no denying that a mini twist style is one of the most gorgeous protective hairstyles you can wear at any given time. They can be rocked during all occasions, from the ballroom to the beach and are sometimes the go to styles for women who may not like doing mini braids.
Mini twists are very versatile and can be rocked by ladies with all lengths and hair types. If you are curious about rocking mini twists as a hairstyle but aren’t quite sure about what you may be getting into, check out the 8 pros and cons of wearing mini twists that we have listed below!
Pros
Creates a fuller look
Mini twists are a great option for those of us with little density because they create the illusion of voluminous hair. Why? This is due to the smaller twists resembling loose hair and the fact that even though your twists stretch your hair there is still some shrinkage with them.
As we all know, for most of us, our loose hair can showcase super volume but can also mean more upkeep. With mini twists you can get the volume and low manipulation all in one.
Less time to install
For most of us, mini twists can take a shorter amount of time to install than mini braids. I said most of us because there are some women that have stated that mini braids actually takes them a SHORTER amount of time to install than mini twists.
Most women state that it takes them between 1-3 hours to install mini twists (this of course depends on the size of your twists and or the density and length of your hair). I know some of y’all may be saying “This isn’t a short period of time!” but compared to the 4-12 hours that it can take to install mini braids, these can be a heaven sent.
Easy removal
Compared to the removal of mini braids, mini twists can take little to no time to remove. This removal time can last between 30 mins-2 hours. We would suggest using some oil to coat your fingers and removing your twists being as generous as you would like to be cause the oil can act as a great pre poo.
Love them I do it maybe once a year and keep them for like 2 months cuz you can wash and condition and style them normally.
I love mini twists! When I wash them, I put them in larger twists (4-6) and pin them down. Then I put a net over my head so it won’t disturb my twists but I can clean them and deep condition with coconut oil. I also stretch them while wet with African threading method. Maybe try that if you have tangling and frizz after washing mini twists =D
I actually tried them for the first time a few weeks ago. I LOVED them. They were easy maintenance and super cute. It took me about 3hrs to install but I kept them in for about 6 weeks and only ended up with about three knots during the entire take down. My hair also grew so much. These just may be my go to hairstyle.
I have micro twists … 400 of them. Since I don’t have thick hair the tinier size gives me the illusion of having volume, I’m 4b, 15”. They are the best thing I’ve ever ever ever done to my hair. At first I considered microlocks but decided to do a trial with twists first in case I wouldn’t like the look of locks/twists but then fell in love with the micro twists as well as not wanting to give up on my luscious oils & butters which I would have to if I let them lock up.
For the first time in my life I actually retained all my growth in the first the months resulting in 1” of measurable growth! I stretch-dry with a blow dryer that gives me all my length back and all I use is aloe Vera juice and castor oil. I stopped using combs for
now so I just gently detangle each piece and retwist on clean damp hair. Since I do it myself it takes me a few days to redo but then it’s “wake and shake” for the next 6-8 wks, totally free and totally worth it.
