Dessy on YouTube shows us that having straight hair does not have to be boring and there are quite a few style options we can do while relaxed or sporting flat ironed natural hair and still keep our strands protected.
Sometimes when our hair is freshly done we will be tempted to wear it out and down, no accessories no fuss, but after awhile that gets old and the need to switch things up takes over.
The thing to remember with styling straight hair is to keep it light on the product. Your style should look effortless and not too plastered down or ‘product-ty’, not only is this good for your hair but it allows you to try a few different styles without having the need to wash your hair.
Protective styling is very important in keeping long relaxed hair healthy and continuing to retain length in the long term. Protective styling doesn’t begin and end with braids and weaves however so updo’s are an excellent way to put your strands out of the way and have a pretty style for the week.
With that said what is the key to healthy relaxed hair or natural hair that is kept straight often?
1. Consistent deep conditioning* with heat – I know you are tired of hearing us preach about this, but we cannot do a post without mentioning the importance of treating your hair with a little conditioning love weekly or bi weekly and why heat is so important to the process. When you use heat you open the cuticles of your hair and allow it to absorb more of the good stuff than it would without heat.
2. Sealing – Sealing is exceedingly important to relaxed hair and the main reason is because it is naturally porous. Once you deep condition, use an oil directly afterwards to seal in that moisture. It doesn’t have to be a heavy oil, just something light like grapeseed oil* to block the moisture from leaving your hair too early in the styling game.
3. Protein – Using protein regularly helps to bring high porosity hair back to normal levels. It fills in the gaps and weak areas in the hair strand so that your hair can be stronger and retain moisture better.

Do you have a link for protective styles for short hair?
Cute but get dat kitchen together boo
Cute braid…but she needed to be shaped up before u posted the pic…. would u send a client out if ur salon with that neck looking like that??? Just asking!!!
She did that herself at home, she didn’t go to a salon.
Man who cares smh. Her hair is still freaking cute! Every woman doesn’t want the back of their head shaped up. She’s a natural beauty, leave her hair alone. Smh. She did it herself and did a great job.
She did that herself…I wish I could do my own like that 🙂
i don’t think she shoulda been shaped up – this is how our natural napes look. we don’t have straight baby hair – so it looks aight to me as is . my question is – how do you keep the back of the hair (near the nape) from reverting or drawing up? I flat iron my natural hair and it does pretty well except for the nape – that part always kinks up fast and gets tangled because it gets nappy faster than the other hair.
AGREED… she needs NOTHING.. it’s perfect!
Haters man I swear smh!! This style rocks!! I want this style asap! #LoveIt
@ Pia use edge control
The style is cute….why does she need a shape up? Pointless comment!!!
She doesn’t have to shape up. Hers is better than mine cos my hair grows all the way down my neck to my shirt collar line and i love it that way. Its all about loving what u have. I think its beautiful on her.
