“Oh Arlene, your hair is laid girl!” The video I am about to show you is done by one of my favorite YouTubers this month. I actually found Mo’s Channel by accident which for me was great. In the video she takes her friends 4C natural hair from curly to trimmed and straight in about 3.5 hours, and we get to see it in just 10 short minutes, isn’t technology amazing?
While the entire video is very useful we wanted to highlight some thoughts on trimming your natural hair. There are two schools of thought when it comes to trimming, some stylists will advise you to trim on a schedule, every 2-4 months keeping things nice and even and healthy, we affectionately call this the ‘one size fits all approach’.
Then there is another school of thought that says, you should trim your hair according to the damage found in your hair, this can be done using the search and destroy method instead of a full blown trim, leaving the hair healthy. We mention the word ‘healthy’ twice because regardless of the option you choose removing damaged ends aids in hair health over all.
Alma will tell you, her growth rate is slower in comparison to some other women, she has made the point that her growth rate might be hereditary because other women in her family have the same rates. Yet Alma has achieved waist length hair through prudent trimming, so what does that mean?
If she tells you her story she will make the point that in order to retain the length she has to trim less and protect more. Lets just say not every one agrees, however in some instances opinions do not matter sometimes the proof is always in the pudding.
Alma will write a post on growth rates and the trimming schedules which a lot of the stylists’ recommendations are based on soon so I won’t go too much into it here but in the meantime, peep the video and let us know how often you trim your hair.
