The best part of the natural journey, for me, is the comradery and commonalities we have amongst each other as naturals.
Whether it be a technique used on a wash n go, or a product used on a twist out or simply because we both just big chopped whatever it is I love the fact that we all have something in common. Even though we might all have different hair patterns there are certain things that almost every natural can relate to.
Here are 5 things most naturals have in common:
1. You despise humidity
Humidity is the worst for most people’s hair, but definitely for me and my natural hair. Humidity can turn a bomb twist out into a failed twist out in about 10 minutes. I live in Texas, where it is super humid, all the time, so I’ve learned to cope with it, but I’m still not a fan and I know many naturals who feel the same exact way.
2. You own multiple containers of Eco Styler Gel*
I have at least 2 jars in my cabinet at all times. Eco styler gel* is a natural girl’s best friend because it can be used for almost all natural styles, and it is a tried and true fave. Even if you are not an Eco Styler* natural, I can almost bet you have two jars of your favorite gel in your stash.
3. You have at least 1 Shea Moisture* product
Right after I did the big chop I immediately went to Target and bought all of the Shea Moisture products* that had. Sad, yet true. I can bet this is the same with most of you!
4. You are used to the stares and the questions
Natural hair is beautiful, but unfortunately, not everyone thinks so, and they don’t understand that it can come in many shapes and sizes. Monday I can come into work with a curly wash and go, and then Wednesday I could come in with a full on fro.
Natural hair is extremely versatile and it is sometimes hard for people to wrap their heads around it which leads to questions, stares and sometimes a forbidden pat down. Who can relate?
5. You’ve contemplated getting a relaxer again, at least once
I can’t speak for every natural, but I know that there have been times in my natural hair journey where I literally almost booked an appointment to get a relaxer because I was just over my hair. This happens at least every couple of months. It might not happen often for you but I can bet it crossed your mind at least once.
#6 You have so many products under your shelf, you can open your own beauty supply house. Leading you to believe an intervention may be needed…. 🙂
#3…..NO. Shea moisture does nothing for my hair
Number 4 is hilarious and true. There’s an old white lady at my job and I normally wear a wig or silk out but I decided to let my hair do its own thing and rock a coily 4 c fro today. When she saw my hair she about broke her neck trying to look at my hair! She probably didn’t know what to make of my hair! LOL! I loved it! All of these are true!
Thanks for the info
