There’s a video making tumultuous waves on social media. In this video, a male stylist applies a product to a lady’s hair, straightens it with a blow dryer*, then sprays water on the straightened, silky hair. What happens next is a shocker – the water just rolls off the hair like raindrops on polyethylene. Check out the video below:

If you’re wondering what product was used, it’s the Color Wow Dream Coat. This video has not only sparked interest but has raised the hopes of many curly-haired women. Does this product work on all textures, including the kinky* 4C coils? If yes, how long does it last? Can it withstand the heat of summer? So many questions!
According to the brand’s website, Dream Coat is good for all hair types, but especially for frizzy hair, dry hair, and coarse, wavy, or curly hair. It’s also safe for color-, Keratin-, or Brazilian-treated hair. Well, that’s what the company says. But what do the customers say? Does the company’s claim match user reality?
A few women have gone ahead to use their hair as the experimental lab rats for this product. Here’s what some of them have to say.
True to the Dream Coat legacy, my hair didn’t start growing the second I stepped outside on a humid day. The Dream Coat for Curly Hair’s anti-humidity powers aside, I wish it gave my curls longer-lasting definition. By the second day, they started to hang a bit more loosely than usual. – Devon Abelman
It definitely added an extra, noticeable bounce to my curls. After using the Color Wow Dream Coat, my curls were glossier and more defined, and, most wonderfully, seemingly immune to frizz. However, my hair is way too thick and curly for this to be the only product I use — it didn’t give me the moisture my hair needs” – Elena Nicolaou
On YouTube, you’ll find many positive reviews of the product telling how it kept the curls in place for a longer period than the user was accustomed to. Honestly, though, there aren’t many reviews. As few as these reviews are, there are just enough for anyone to form an opinion of the product and its compatibility with 4c hair.
From considering these reviews and comments from users who have tested the efficacy of this product, all we can say so far is that the Color Wow Dream Coat appears to work for curly hair just as much as it does for straight hair.
It does a pretty decent job at taming stray strands and withstanding moderate levels of humidity. It, however, may not protect the hair for the entire duration of the long humid summer and may not work as great for tightly curly kinky* hair.
Still, the experiences of these women could be the motivation you need to try out the product for yourself. You will never really tell for certain what the results will be for your hair texture until you try it. You may also be able to find a combination of products that makes your hair genuinely humidity-proof until you are ready to wash it out of course.
If you’re afraid that it may contain ingredients that could be harmful to your natural curls, you can put down your defensive shield. Color Wow is gluten-free, vegan, and free of sulfates, which means it’s gentle enough to use on any hair texture.
