If your child’s hair seems chronically dry and brittle, it’s probably time to incorporate a regular deep conditioning* treatment into their hair regimen. A deep conditioning treatment will improve your child’s general hair health making his or her hair smoother, more elastic, and ultimately easier to manage.
Children with afro textured natural hair do not generally need a conditioner that’s full of silicones and alcohols. Those conditioners usually have a high rate of product build-up which is no good if you want to keep your little one’s scalp clean and primed for growth.
All-natural conditioners are usually your best bet. They’re cheap, easy to create at home, and can be tailor-made to provide the specific nutrients and things that you need to help your little one’s hair remain hydrated and healthy. Below are 3 of my favorites:
Olive Oil* and Honey Deep Conditioning Treatment
Extra virgin olive oil* is a great oil for deep conditioning* because it penetrates the hair shaft. Honey is a humectant, which means it draws in moisture. Putting these two items together creates a great combo for your child’s “thirsty” hair.
Ingredients
1/4 cup 100% pure honey
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil*
plastic conditioning cap
Instructions
Combine ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Apply to your child’s hair in sections. (Applicator bottles work well for this.)
Cover with a conditioning cap and have your child sit under a hooded dryer* for 15 minutes.
Rinse hair thoroughly using warm water first and then cool water to seal cuticles. Style as usual.
Banana Deep conditioning Treatment (Great For Very Dry And Hair)
Bananas are known in the natural hair community for helping with extra “thirsty” hair. They’re rich in both potassium and Vitamin A* which are two things that the hair needs.
Olive oil is used in this recipe to help penetrate the hair strands and add moisture to dry strands. The Greek yogurt will give the hair a healthy balance of moisture and protein which will help to soften the hair.
Ingredients
1 ripe banana
2-3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil*
1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
1 tablespoon pure honey
plastic conditioning cap
Instructions
Mix the banana and EVOO in a blender until very smooth. (Be sure to get out all lumps from the banana.) Add the remaining ingredients and continue to mix until there are no lumps. Pour the mixture through a strainer to remove any extra lumps or banana pulp before applying to your little one’s hair.
Apply mixture to wet hair, cover with a plastic conditioning cap and leave on for a minimum of 30 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
Tropical Deep Conditioning Treatment
This recipe is fantastic for curly kids whose hair not only needs moisture but who has hair that tends to break easily.
Ingredients
1 Cup coconut milk
1/4 Cup Honey
2 Tbsp Mango Butter/Oil
plastic conditioning cap
Instructions
Mix ingredients together in a small bowl. Warm mixture in microwave slightly. (Around 10 to 15 seconds should do.) Apply mixture to your child’s clean damp hair. Cover hair for 30+ minutes.
Rinse.
Try any of these homemade deep conditioners on your child, come back and let us know how it went.
