How to use amalaki powder
Some people have successfully made their own concoctions of amalaki powder that consists of different oils* and other powders.
But for others, these concoctions ended up caked up inside of their hair and difficult to rinse out. All you need for your amalaki mix is water and amalaki powder.
The amount of powder you need will depend on how much hair you have — length and thickness. I recommend that you buy a pound, so that you can play around with how much you need, especially if you have thick hair.
To help prevent the amalaki powder from drying out your hair as it dries, it’s best to oil your hair beforehand. You can use your favorite oil or use amalaki oil, or even a mixture of amalaki with your fave oil. You can do a deep condition before applying the amalaki mix to your hair, which should be done just as you do a relaxer — in sections. Make sure to detangle each section before applying it. Your hair should also be damp during application.
After the mix dries, rinse it out right away to prevent it from caking up too much. It’s best to rinse with warm water and wash it out using a conditioner. This will prevent your hair from over-drying. Just make sure to get it all out.
Applying amalaki oil to your hair
You can use amalaki oil just as you do any other oil. You should apply this after you have treated your hair with the mask. While your hair is still damp and after it has been detangled, you should part your hair and apply the oil to your scalp. Massage it thoroughly to your entire head. It may feel fool like your scalp just ate a peppermint*.
You can then wrap your head with a warm wet towel for an hour or even leave it in overnight. You eventually want to wash it out.
You can also use this oil as a conditioner after shampooing. Massage it into your scalp and hair and allow it to sit for 15-20 minutes. Some people put on a shower cap* during the wait. You’ll want to put a towel on your pillow if you decide to leave it in overnight.
This isn’t an oil that you want to wear out because of the strong smell.
Things to know before using amalaki for your hair
Ladies who have chemically processed hair may not want to use this treatment because it could cause your hair to become very rough. You should do a patch test to see before applying to your entire head.
Make sure to detangle your hair before applying amalaki.
Avoid mixing oils* with amalaki powder because it could make it over-drying, leaving your hair rough and brittle. It can also make it harder to remove the paste from your hair.
Overall, you want to keep the process simple. If that ends up working for you, why add other stuff to it? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
