Youtuber Olivia Rose recently tackled the reasons we experience dry hair and we agree 100% with all 10 points that she made and thought I would share her video with you here. We have a ton of content on dry hair under various headings but it does not hurt to reiterate them in list format here.
Below I have outlined 5 of the main reasons your hair might be dry which for me are critical:
Imbalance protein-water
Too much water can cause over elasticity and mushy hair that does not retain water well. Protein adds strength to the strands causing healthy water retention. However excessive protein leads to super dry and brittle hair as well. This means that we have to maintain a healthy balance between the two is what will keep your hair moisturized.
Using only a leave-in conditioner* without sealing with a butter/oil
Many of us have porous hair which means that we absorb water well but that water will leave the hair strand just as quickly. To avoid that it is recommended that you use a butter or oil to seal the moisture in.
Shampoo too often
Regular sulfate shampoos can strip the hair of essential oils* and moisture when uses excessively. Only use regular shampoo’s with sulfates to cleanse the scalp from buildup. You can also avoid sulfates all together and use a sulfate free shampoo* to retain moisture
Harsh coloring products
Color agents like bleach or any kind of chemical treatment, as a matter of fact, can cause dry hair because they strip the strands of essential layers or the chemicals to work.
Stripped strands are dry strands period and the only way to combat the dryness is to condition often and avoid harsh chemicals
Brittle ends
When your ends are in bad shape they will often appear dry and hard to the touch. The only way to fix dry brittle and damaged ends is to trim them. A good trim will change your life! Your hair is stronger you retain more moisture and your hair looks healthy overall.
