Yesterday our natural hair friend and guru Naptural85 did an awesome video demonstrating how she uses the raw aloe vera plant to pre-poo her hair.
During the video she made the point that her hair “loved this stuff” and I can attest to that because years ago my mother used to do the same exact thing.
When I was much younger my mother would wash my hair every single Saturday but before applying the shampoo she would go outside and cut a piece of aloe plant scrape the gel and apply it directly to my hair and scalp.
Back then she did not call it a pre-poo but she knew how much my hair loved the treatment and how beneficial the gel was for my hair and strands.
In the video, Whitney makes note of some of the benefits of the gel which include:
1. Aloe vera contains proteolytic enzymes which repair dead skin cells on the scalp
2. It is a great conditioner and leaves your hair all smooth and shiny
3. It promotes hair growth
4. Prevents itching on the scalp
5. Reduces dandruff
How to prepare the conditioner
You can purchase your Aloe Vera plant from your local health food store, I have seen it sold at Sprouts if you have one in your area or at the Farmers Market.
If you are really fancy you can even plant your own so that you can have it on demand once it starts to grow.
Pick the leaf and cut off a piece of it that you will then slice open revealing the potent gel. You can either scrape the gel and then apply it or just use the open slice and apply it directly to your scalp.
When you scrape the gel out, it is actually easier to apply it to the length of your hair which is different from the video but something to consider.
Section your hair properly before starting the application because you want to be very deliberate when applying the gel to your hair and scalp.
Adding your oils*
In the video, Whitney makes a pretty potent oil mix that she uses on the length of the hair. You can follow her exact recipe or you can use any oil that you have at home for the length of your strands.
After you have applied everything to your hair, simply twist the section and put your hair away for some superb overnight conditioning.

It would be on youtube, but I don’t think she’s uploaded it yet. Click youtube on the bottom right while you’re watching this video to go there and find her other uploads. She has a lot of great videos.
