Rihanna made the front page of yahoo this morning. Y’all know what that means right? She did something a little odd to the eyes of mainstream fashion and beauty society and of course it was on purpose. Rihanna wore bantu knots to the Iheart radio awards, as a matter of fact they are calling it her ‘goth look’, because of the green lippy and the all black everything ensemble. Here is what the Yahoo Insider had to say:

Mel B from Spice Girls rocked the small knots in her 1997 film, “Spice World,” and the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes from the ’90s band TLC wore the same style on various occasions, including the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards. And more recently, Gwen Stefani has also been spotted wearing the same hairstyle.
OH, thank goodness for Mel B and Gwen Stefani or they would have thought Rihanna straight lost her mind! Rihanna knew she would have been on the stage a lot, she was very aware that she was nominated for countless awards because she was constantly talking about it on social media.
Here is what celebrity stylist Daniel Musto had to say about the singers style:

Here’s the thing, personally the look isn’t for me, but then again I am no rockstar. I bet if Daniel Musto was on her payroll he would be singing another tune, we bet he would twist those knots like he was a black girl born and raised in Barbados. Personally, her look was not for me, but I understand it, and as usual she knows how to push the envelope with mainstream media, and it is totally funny!

The last time I saw bantu knots on mainstream media, is a black girl in jail (Orange is the New Black). She made bantu knots goth. Her outfit and lip color, I did not care for, but SHE worked it. The Bantu knots weren’t the problem it was the overall look outfit and makeup that was just hideous. Bantu’s, cornrows, braids, braid outs, natural styles in general have been worn to red carpet events and rocked well from Angela, to Jada to Lupita! This incident was just an epic FAIL!

I say if she likes it then who am I to it was wrong. I think as women and especially black women we need to up lift others no matter their style. No one said anything when Gwen wore it. So I think if we up lift our women and just let them rock their own style all will be fine. I just started wearing my hair natural and all of my family seems to make fun it or say I look a hot mess. You know what I don’t care what they say I think I look good and the only person I am trying to make happy is me. So no one has the right to make someone feel unpretty. What yo may not like others love. It took me awhile to stop letting everybody tell Me how to fix my hair and how to dress but finally after 41 years I just do me and what makes me happy and I think that is what she is doing too. So I say you wear your hair, clothes, and make up a way you want to and wear it proud because in the end the ONLY OPINION THAT MATTERS IS YOURS!!!!!
