It’s not just about having a black girl win just because she is black. As far as I’ve seen so far, all the black girls who’ve represented their countries in these pageants have been more than a pretty face and a sexy body.
Particularly in recent times they’ve been in the pursuit of higher education or have budding respectable careers. This should be indication that we’re not just exotic people that fit the stereotypes that they usually associate with blacks.
Besides, we’ve already seen a few black girls win the coveted spot in beauty pageants but it seems that is more likely to be so in the Ms Universe pageant. From my observation, a majority of the black contestants who went on to win, sported straight hair be it weave extensions*, relaxed hair or the traditional press n’ curl. I don’t even remember seeing braids and twists much less locs which has long been regarded as rough and for radicals.
The satisfaction we would get from having a natural or a girl with locs win the pageant is simply vindication; vindication that the standard of beauty as it is stipulated by them is rather narrow, limited in it’s reach and therefore flawed. It would give little black girls the added boost of confidence to see someone with their skin and hair crowned the most beautiful woman in the world.
In a time when we have news items about little girls wanting to straighten and dye their hair blonde as a result of feeling that they’re not as good as little girls from other races, something like the crowning of a black woman with locs could go a far way in helping black children recognize beauty in their melanin rich skin and kinks curls or coils.
For these reasons it would be phenomenal if the natural community has a small victory in the crowning of a beautiful black girl with natural hair or locs to boot. I am aware that these beauty pageants are still founded and judged on the Euro-centric idea of beauty. As long as this persists we may very well be wishing until kingdom come, but we can’t help but hope. What are your thoughts on the issue? Do you think we will ever see a dread loc’ed beauty crowned Miss world?

Alas it was not to be. While she was among the top two favourites, she placed 3rd in the talent competition and 5th overall. She did well all things considered, England didn’t even make top 20. Spain won.
Dianna Rhooms says
Still can’t believe the overall results but hey it is what it is.
BlackHairInformation.com says
Yup, the fact that Spain came out if nowhere :).
Fancyface Cherry Sweets says
They did the same last year
Dianna Rhooms says
She finished top five. Go Jamaica. Last year it was a pixie cut that made it that far. So yea we just might see that
