I am extremely cheap, so even though going to a natural hair salon was something I always wanted to do since I started my journey, I just couldn’t bring myself to pay those high prices.
My best friend surprised me with an early graduation gift of a gift certificate to this fab natural hair salon, I was ecstatic! I immediately booked my appointment for that weekend, and was shocked when they were able to fit me in- I heard that it took weeks to get an appointment.
The morning of the appointment I was still not sure whether I wanted to get a blowout or a twist out, because I had been on a no heat challenge, but I figure since it’s been a year, I may as well treat myself and get it blown out. When I got to the salon and checked in the receptionist was very friendly and told me that Nia, my stylist, was running late, but would be with me as soon as possible.
I didn’t mind waiting because that gave me more time to go back and forth in my head about which style I wanted, and by the time Nia called me over to her chair I was again set on the blow out. Nia was super friendly and seemed to really know what she was doing, and I told her that I wanted to get a blow out.
Before she started on my hair, she gave me a consultation, and told me that she was going to use a “special” shampoo on my hair which would make my hair easier to straighten and with little heat.
She then proceeded to wash and condition my hair. 2 hours later, she was spinning me around to face the mirror, and I couldnt believe I was looking at myself! My hair was shiny, and super sleek. It also was mid way down my back, and I can’t even lie, I was feeling myself. Even though I paid with a gift certificate, I tipped her generously.
Nia was right, my blowout lasted a good two weeks. However, 2 weeks later when I washed my hair I couldn’t believe what happened my hair was limp and my curl pattern was gone.
It looked like my hair had been relaxed but I don’t remember getting a relaxer. I was so confused, I called up the salon and demanded to speak with Nia.
They told me that Nia no longer worked there… The receptionist said that apparently she was mixing relaxer into the companies shampoo, and she was so sorry that it happened to me, but there was nothing she could do.
I was crushed. 5 years of natural hair down the drain. Needless to say, I never went to another natural hair salon again, and now after having to big chop again, I am 2 years strong on my second natural hair journey.
Why?????
That’s wicked.
I don’t trust salons anymore, not even the natural ones. I’m learning how to take care of my own hair–I think we all should.
Me too. I haven’t gone to a salon in years. Don’t plan to. I do occasionally have someone give me an intricate braid pattern every once in awhile.
Disrespectful!!!! Crystal J Kelley Vernisha Williams Lanisha Taylor
Ohhh hellll no!!!
Damn. So she didn’t smell that relaxer when she had it on her head? Nia needs a butt kicking.
I heard the quickly put in and out like a conditioner and you won’t know.
Awesome ! very informative :/
I heard stories like this for years now. That is why I only would go to one person and that is because she is my cousin’s cousin. Otherwise they all can kick rocks, I will do my own hair!
I would have been so devastated!!!!
Sounds familiar
Just when I was thinking about trying out a natural hair salon….
But who tf does that?
Story is faker than a 3 dollar bill. Sounds like a natural hair urban legend to scare people.
That why you never go alone always bring someone with you
To a fight???
The hair salon
I don’t see how that stops this from happening.
That’s crazy and I had no idea relaxer can be mixed with shampoo I’m not gonna do it but does that make it less harsh or something because I just don’t see how it would work
I believe that the Dominicans put a light perm in my niece hair (thick waves natural hair) as if it was conditioner never been the same since.
Next time bring your own shampoo and conditioner.
First of all, the odor of a perm is easily detectable. Second, I never allow any type of ‘creme’ except conditioners on my hair. Thirdly, I bring my products to the salon with me. Mainly, I shampoo my hair myself! Lastly, I would have sued that shop.
Thats the part i dont get. How are you mixing relaxer in the shampoo
To me that seems like a dangerous practice; you are not supposed to relax wet hair for a reason. Water breaks some of the hair bonds, chemicals break others. If the hair is wet it is more vulnerable to chemical damage, if chemicals meant for dry hair are used. It’s also shady and unethical. I’m guessing she was just mixing it in like you mix color with developer-stir it or shake it in a container.
No it is not, I use the Just for me texture softner (use to come in yellow box) and it is not strong. I put it in my natural hair after I had transitioned and big chopped. Because I wasn’t smart enough to know a perm, relaxer, texture softner, texturizer are all the same
JewJew Saunders I can ssmell i a mile away. Maybe it is just me.
They also put it in conditioners and you can’t smell the difference.
Paranoia…wow! I’m sure this happens but not everywhere, not even most places. Just be careful where you go, some shops you should never step foot in!
But why would you do that?! What’s wrong with there own natural hair??… What is the point ? Are they paying you for that ??!
I’m not even going to read this because it makes me so angry b**ches think they have a right to do something to you that you didn’t agree with or ask for
I have had my experiences with beauticians… Over processed, over heated or braided too tight. All have cause some sort of damage.. It’s scary to trust hair stylists these days
Get a good Lawyer.
I always wondered how do people mix relaxer with shampoo without the activation. I heard some stories of mixing a keratin treatment and that one can grow out after a few months. I always go to my salon washed by myself, I get a trim and straighten 3x a year
Unbelievable sounds like a lawsuit shop owner is liable for what goes on at her business
Been salon once in my life I grew up natural and always been. I don’t trust salons the one time I went as a teen my hair came out and now I’m almost tailbone length I’m good on my own I know what’s best for my hair. Ladies please learn to take care of your own hair it’s so worth it less stress much cheaper and I enjoy it
I’m very sorry that happened to you. I’m 2 years into my transition and devastated is an understatement of what I would have been.
wow, sorry that happened to her. smh. I wonder how she got the relaxer in the shampoo without any one smelling it
Story is faker than a 3 dollar bill. Sounds like a natural hair urban legend to scare people. Legend has it she’s still doing random shampoo perms messing up people’s naturals.. °Shît sound dumb.
OMG! That woman should be sued or she’ll keep doing! There was a recent study linking relaxers to fibroids in black women. Stay away from relaxers!
That was a terrible thing to do to someone.
This is insane!!! The main reason I went natural is because of the way the chemicals in perm products burned my scalp. There was no burning, tingling or anything?? My hair would’ve had patches dropping to the floor….chemicals mixed with shampoo???? Hmmm??
Pro products don’t have an activator, they are used straight from the container.
Something similar to this happened to me. I started my first natural hair journey 17/Aug/2013. About some days to my birthday last year, 2015 I decided to do a beautiful hair style of weaves. Met a lady who said she’s Good with natural hair and said she was a natural herself. I couldn’t tell because she had weave on as well. At the arranged time, I got to the place after washing my hair at home. Not only did she delay me for almost 2 hours she got this tlc relaxer and without saying a word to me, attempted putting it on my hair. Story short, she convinced me that after a couple of weeks, my hair will be restored. May 2016, my hair was same so I cut it on the 3rd and lost all those long hair I already had in order to start my natural hair journey again.
Thank you for sharing your experience Brittany. The same thing happened to me 5 months ago. I went for a blow-out of my natural hair at a new salon . the hair dresser said that she knew how to manage natural hair. 2 weeks later my thick and below shoulder hair starting falling. 5 months later my hair is still straight . I was trying to figure out how she did it and never considered that maybe she mixed the relaxer in the shampoo. I have been devastated and now have to start all over.
I agree… I would have beat her like a drum and sued her and the salon.
She would have gotten an ass beating from me if she put that crap in my hair. 5 years happily sober from the creamy crack.
Three year now, my hair looks healthy and 8 inches long. Congratulations on the 5 years!
I woulda beat her ass if she did that to me.I woulda had her meet me back at the salon so I could fuck her up and then sue her cause nobody gave her permission to sneakily relax my hair.I just asked for a blow out.
How is this possible? Mixing the shampoo with hair relaxer? I wonder could she still sue them because the salon found out about it but didn’t think to alert any of their clients….
Happened to me too. She put that Keratin smoothing conditioner in my hair…..UGH! Been about 3 years….Ain’t been back since!
