Don’t get me wrong, I love being a naturalista and I will never go back to getting a relaxer, but I do understand that there are some women who have chosen not to jump on the natural hair band wagon! Here are 5 reasons a woman may decide not to go natural and some things they should consider:
1. It takes work
Believe it or not, some people think that being natural means that you don’t have to do anything to your hair, aside from simply wearing it in it’s natural state.
I learned this the hard way when I realized that a “wash n go” wasn’t simply washing my hair and going. The process takes me at least 45min to an hour.
What you should consider
If you want healthy relaxed hair or healthy natural hair you have to work for it so even though one texture might seem harder than the other there is always sacrifices to get to the goals you desire.
2. Your curls might not “Pop”
I was guilty of this one. It took me a while to come to the realization that my curl pattern wasn’t going to look like everybody else. Everyone’s hair texture and type is different. That can be very frustrating to some, when they do the big chop and then realize that their curls don’t pop, and their pattern isn’t what they thought it was going to be.
What you should consider
Once you change your mindset about how your hair is defined then things get easier, if you just prefer straight hair you can opt to flat iron* your hair monthly and still be natural.
3. Natural hair products aren’t cheap
Many times you see your favorite YouTube blogger posting all of these fab hair products and reviewing them, so of course you want to try them too. Some of the more high end products are very expensive and can burn a hole in your pocket.
What you should consider
There are always cheaper alternatives to everything, products that are geared towards natural hair can also be used for relaxed hair as well which means over all we have to be smart about what we buy.
4. “There is Nothing Wrong With Relaxers”
Contrary to popular belief, you can still have healthy long relaxed hair, if you are properly treating and caring for it.
Relaxers should be done by professionals, and you should be treating your hair and getting regular trims, regularly. Many times, women get relaxes, and don’t do any hair care until 6-8 weeks later when it’s time to get relaxed again.
What you should consider
Even though you will hear the statement ‘there is nothing wrong with relaxers’ there is proof that relaxers are not healthy for everyone. With more knowledge comes more power to choose the best alternative for you.
If you are not careful. If you choose to relax we always recommend stretching your relaxers as much as you can, one to three times a year if possible.
5. Criticism
Some naturals will tell you that they had to have tough skin because they were criticized not just from strangers, or employers, but from family members. Some even had trouble with their significant others who prefer them with straight hair.
Things to consider
At the end of the day their is nothing wrong with having tough skin and you are ultimately in charge of your hair. If someone walks away because you decided to wear your own natural hair, then they did not deserve you in the first place.
The moral to the story is, regardless of what you might hear about one side of the story the other side might be just as compelling. At the end of the day it comes down to the choice and how you decide to handle that choice. Are you considering going natural? What are some of the things holding you back?

Ok.., so am totally African – Nigerian Full Africana – and it seems our hair is more coarse, brittle and really Afro (consider the African Fore-fathers, those black n white photos with their hair all rounded up without curls or kinks) and I really want to go natural…buh it got me thinking if am not going to look like some great-grand mother with my natural.. IMO, Afro-American looks a lot better and modern..
End-point is: How do I go about it? Are there special remedies or regimens for complete African natural hair? Any advice for us here?
