What if I told you that there was a magazine out there devoted to sharing a story of what it means to be natural in America, and that showcases hair and black beauty on a different level than other magazines you’ve seen out there?
Insert CRWN Magazine.
CRWNMAG exists to create a progressive dialogue around what it really means to “go natural” in America. Through beautiful content, thoughtful commentary, hair inspiration and resources; we’re telling the world the truth about black women by showcasing a new standard of beauty — and documenting our story in tangible, print form.
CRWN magazine is devoted to celebrating every natural, curly-haired black woman and all of the great amazing qualities and things we have to offer. For me, it gives a high fashion type of feel but instead for natural hair. A “hair” magazine on a tier of its own.
Each print of CRWN consists of 130 pages filled with beautifully shot photos, hair culture and lifestyle. It is a quarterly print and I believe it would make for an excellent coffee table magazine.
Co-founders Lindsey Day, who serves as editor-in-chief, and Nkrumah Farrar, who is its creative director, collaborated to create this platform that takes a deeper look at the experiences of natural-haired black women. This includes setting a new standard of beauty while encouraging women everywhere to embrace their own hair journey.
Because of the truth that we don’t often seen women of color depicted as beautiful, I think this initiative is a great thing. To have a magazine specifically for black hair and beauty that goes further into the black woman as a whole; discussing lifestyle topics from her hustle, to where she travels, what keeps her going etc is awesome. We currently don’t have anything out there like it and it is definitely needed.
The first issue is expected to be released this spring and it’s available for only $16. In the mean time, you can check out CRWN on Instagram.
